Consider how many people are actually infected but never get tested. Those infected numbers are only confirmed illnesses so your mortality rate is going to be much lower especially based on the fact that ALL its symptoms mirror influenza or the common cold. So many people are going to contract this virus and do nothing and eventually recover. It's the very old, very young, and other populations at risk who will die such as those who are Immunocompromosed and those who don't have any idea how to treat a cold and stay hydrated and when to access medical care or those without access to medical care.
The influenza stats I referred to have been researched over decades and there's a pretty good confidence that the data are correct. Since the Coronavirus is an epidemic and slowly becoming pandemic, there's not enough data to estimate true infection rate.
The point of my op is that people need to chill. This ain't ebola folks. Unless you're immunocompromised, old, or a child you've got nothing to worry about. Statistically speaking you've got a rediculously higher chance of getting and dying from the flu which a significant majority of the population could care less about. Don't get on the hype train just yet. When this hits 1 million come back and we can talk.

thats not true by the way, this isn't killing just the young/old/immunocompromised, and there are still more dying than recovering as an end result. it could be killing the weak faster than the healthy, but the healthy are still dying and the mortality rate may be far, far higher than the numbers you're already shunning. like you said - probably best to wait before making assumptions :P

While SARS/MERS and other Coronavirus's have potential to be disastrous....I fucking hate how this shit happens and everyone and their dog becomes an epidemiologist. Swine flu happened due to a hard shift in the type of flu when it switched back to an H1n1 virus. That's why it killed children more than older adults.
Ebola is not a scary virus for a first world country really at all. Very very unlikely to have widespread infection due to modern sanitation techniques, ppe, and fairly easy containment.
Coronavirus's like Wuhan, SARS, and MERS are much scarier to a first world country due to their ability to overwhelm a healthcare infrastructure. SARS was the worst we had seen of it, and it is extremely important to contain and control before widespread infection happens. Something the US is doing perfectly of right now.

Yes I'm interested. I found out that Sars had a 10% death rate, wuhan 2% and the influenza .002% but wuhan is contagious before someone has symptoms wich isn't so good. Correct me if I'm wrong about this though

I can't find anything from the cdc on this but there's news articles citing Chinese officials who say this. Better to be cautious I guess. Not sure if they really know yet. Also FYI, not trying to circle back to this lol, but the flu is contagious prior to symptoms too.
I'm still in the position that as a US citizen our health risk for this is extremely low. Many folks in China have inadequate access to quality Healthcare which doesn't help their situation at all.

The flu kills .002% and this wuhan think kills 2% my math could've been wrong etc but what is that 100 times or 1000 times as many people idk but if it got as common as the flu it'd be a mess. Was reading a JAMA article on Coronaviruses today and it's interesting the similarities and also vast differences in signs/symptoms and also the need for mechanical ventilation and mortality rate between MERS and SARS. Only time will tell with this wuhan thing. Living in China in that province would not be cool, but still not worried as a US citizen just yet

I'm gonna go put my head in the sand. Based the thread off how well china contained the virus or how well they concealed the true numbers. Wasn't a threat then and shouldn't be a threat now, but we missed our opportunity to contain so now it's a catastrophe.
