I'm with him, not really digging that new judging system, makes following the event a bit confusing for the audience too, but more importantly I don't think the lack of transparency is fair to the riders. The jam format is fine, but the way they judge it needs to be reworked.
My understanding is that the main argument for it is that it is meant to be a better representation of the rider's entire performance as opposed to just their one top run (or 2 best tricks for Big Air). That's cool, but then why not give each run a grade and then do an average? That should in theory achieve the exact same thing while keeping it somewhat transparent and structured.
It feels to me that they got a bit lazy here and decided to just wing it with "overall impression". With so many riders and runs, you need some sort of system to keep track of everyone's performance, or you can't realistically remember all the runs and tricks and then give a fair ranking.
X Games is the biggest comp in freestyle, they can't be that sloppy with judging imo.

Just because something is unfavorable in your opinion doesn't mean what they did was in vein, you dont think the people putting together xgames are working hard, they are lazy? C'mon.
And to add to Evan's post I guarantee you the judges aren't just sitting there trying to remember each run and calling it how they feel. They are taking notes of every single trick, crash, bobble, and anything else they find notable. Definitely not just winging it.
Overall, I thought it was super enjoyable to watch, more so than many in recent memory.
I hate to be a Debbie Downer... but besides Tom, the commentary was pretty awful. I feel like back in the day we used to laugh at it because they were tailoring to the mainstream viewer that probably doesn't know much about skiing... but this shit just sounded made up. My wife knows next to nothing about freeskiing and she kept asking why they have one dude who knows what he's talking about and the others explain the basics in the most confusing ways.
And the corny quote of the week was during knuckle huck when someone crashed and a commentator said: "put a little too much pepper on that one".

This. I'm not a fan of ESPN as a network but I give it to them for what they are doing and have done for alternative sports. Implementing new ideas year after year is a daunting undertaking. That's progression
Xgames this year has gone off. More runs, larger variety of tricks, all the tricks are sick af, and faster pace. I think it really encourages all around perfection and progression

I hear you, maybe "lazy" was a poor choice of word on my part. My main point is just that there needs to be more transparency around the judging because it's just hella confusing rn.
And to Kutcher's point, then that's great, if they already have a ranking system in place, why not publish it to help with the transparency, because "overall impression" does not really mean anything and watching the event gave me the impression that they did just wing it. But it's just my personal feedback, I'm just one guy.
STEEZUS_CHRI5TYea, the new judging format is a cluster. You are judged on your total/overall impression across all 3 runs. So if you fall, it stays with you across all 3 runs and is taken into account on your overall “impression” and placement. This is why when guys fall they keep their run going because EVERYTHING they do counts.
In other words, 1 fall during any of your three runs will ruin your overall score. It’s suppressing big tricks, taking risks, and trying new tricks. It’s a progression road block.
True that it does not give competitors a second chance if they fail but on the other hand it rewards competitors if they have all creative run

Bindings fucking with both Nico and Noah. It seems like halfpipe is finally starting to progress a bit, though - a few different grabs in doubles, and more variety in what the doubles are, too.
teamdummyAlex Ferreira was unbelievable in pipe.... but his little pole spin at the end of every run is fucking dumb.
It was cool last year but yea he did it every single time...however he goes SO much bigger than everyone else, nobody was even close. His runs were exciting so that makes up for it.

Whatever’s in there, he bounced off it like 3 times at XGAMES. He literally landed on his back while knuckling his gap attempt over the fin (he landed on his feet, it was amazing).
