Replying to Prohibition 100 Year Anniversary (history nerding involved)

100 years ago at midnight the Volstead Act(Ratified the year prior) went into effect. This began the 13 year period of Prohibition. The 21st Amendment(repealing the Volstead act) was ratified nearly a year later, Almost a full 15 years after the Volstead Act itself was ratified. Nebraska was the 36th of the 48 states to Ratify the 18th Amendment banning alcohol, and Utah was the 36th state to ratify the 21st Amendment to repeal it. This period shaped our country for better, and worse. Efforts for alcohol prohibition needed to find a way around the massive tax income from alcohol sales. These efforts helped to pave the way for the 16th amendment passed in 1909, ratified in 1913 allowing an income tax(Though not the first in US history). Though I'm not a huge fan prohibition, it gave women a cause to rally around which gained them significant independence/power and the right to vote with the 19th amendment ratified on August, 18th, 1920. The organization to get prohibition passed was absolutely critical in the womens suffrage movement. Prohibition also helped to fuel the roaring 20s as well as provide opportunity for criminals looking to cash in on peoples desire to drink.
