Rent Skis or Fly Out With Em?

Shit. Your going to get shitty rentals that a million other Jerry's have skied down rocks on. There is a reason they make ski bags.... Demo's are shit too. Wanna know why? Cause people who think they can "ski" rent them but they too just ski down fucking rocks or whatever.

Also most car rental places will put a rack on your car for a little extra $.

BBOGoing to Colorado in February with family(2 adults, 2 kids), we plan on bringing our boots, but I was debating bringing our skis or renting, but it might be a hassle at the airport and fitting into the rental car(midsize suv). Other worry is if there is an issue, I dont want to lose time waiting for a repair, so renting might be the way to go.
This a good idea?
Was thinking Christys (we are doing Vail). Was curious what skis you get at the Sport, and Performance level(demo is a bit more spendy…)

Having recently flown with the fam to ski, it was definitely a hassle. I put two adult and two kids skis in the dakine fall line bag. It worked nicely, weighed in at ~47.5lbs, just under the extra weight charge point.

If I were to do it again I'd probably demo. Fleet rental skis are all garbage, you need to demo to get anything decent. Call the shops in the area and see what's available? You'd want to make a reservation in any case.

bring your skis. you can rent some cheezy all mountain skis for like $50 or $60 or whatever but that is what they are going to be. IMO make arrangements to rent at the ski area if that is what you are going to do. that way your family can go swap sizes mid day or whatever when they realize they were talked into skis that are too short etc. also way less hassle IMO not to make any extra stop. try to save an extra $10 or whatever and it is not worth it. lots of people try to rent their gear the night before so you can get stuck behind a whole bus of texans that all want to save $10 too
just bring your skis tho seriously then you will just be able to roll to the hill and ski. it may be like a job to carry 4 skis around for a few days but you will end up saving like $200/ day

Mid-size suv would be tight with two in the backseat depending on the length of your skis, and this might not fit lengthwise unless you put them diagonally. Doable though but you'd be packed to the brim with luggage too. It might be more worthwhile to spend an extra $100-200 (cost of rentals for 3 days for 1-2ppl) and get a full size suv, and bring your own skis. For a family of 4, even $300 extra for the big suv could be cheaper than renting skis, depending how long you stay.

Depends who you are flying with too. Southwest? Absolutely? Anyone else....consider baggage fees each way and that could add up with a family of four. Bring boots on the plane as a personal item. I'm sure you know this, but never check your boots.

From experience a few times, Christy's is the way to go but rent the demos for yourself, nothing less. They're less than $30 if you pre-order and pick up in Denver. If you get in a mountain town, add another $10-15. I've rented in both Lakewood, CO and SLC for various reasons of not having my own skis and got Candide 3.0 each time. Condition of skis were decent.

Thanks for the advice guys, I am kinda kicking myself, because back when I booked the rental car, a pickup with club cab was cheaper than the midsize suv lol. I think the transport of the skis is my main concearn, flying delta one way and frontier the other(but already bought a package that includes carry on and checked bag). So I should definitely not allow the boots to be checked? I was going to wrap them in cloths or towels if I did check the boot bag.

No never pack your boots. Always carry on. If they lose your bags, at least your vacation won't be ruined because you still have your boots and not rentals.
