The medical system in this country is downright fucked. Health insurance is fucking scam. I just got on Medicaid and couldn't be happier. No deductible, no premium, saved so much fucking money. Go socialism. Fuck health insurance and fuck medical bills.

Also consider contacting the investigative reporter types from each of your local TV stations. Hospitals are for profit businesses and it is getting more and more competitive so they will do almost anything to avoid bad press. You know those guys that do the TV stories that are like channel 2 on your side or whatever. Those guys eat this kind of stuff up.
Truth is the hospitals ultimately sell off these debts for pennies on the dollar so they are not expecting to get all the money. If they agree to settle with you for a lower price like $200 or something they would probably come out ahead. Tell the collection people to put you on their "do not call list". You can apply for it to be paid for by the hospital but will be some bs paperwork. The worst that'll happen is you'll get a ding on your credit, if you care about your credit then get the hospital to pay for it, they got tons of money set aside for this. If it comes down to it, that's what I'm going to do as I do feel like they're just trying to fuck me over essentially. It's already with a debt collector so maybe I can just call them and negotiate a reasonable price. I'm put for collections from my shoulder even though it was supposed to be on health insurance. Deja fucking vu. Had a few shoulder surgeries 8 years ago, was workers comp, AND had good insirsnce at the time. Dude at insurance company for workers comp fucked up a bunch of claims and then quit. I would sort it out and then out of the blue start getting collection calls again. Took almost 2 years to finally be done.

FUCK THIS PIECE OF SHIT COUNTRY. It's mind blowing that being a good American means being down to spend absurd money to blow up brown people in other countries for no reason and being again sick people being able to see a doctor, and people being able to get an education.

Maga types are just a bunch of ignorant racist fucks. If we're really the "greatest country in the world" we would probably fix these issues. This country is depressing.

If you didn't prior, this is why one should utilize healthcare services appropriately. See a pcp or go to urgent care for non life threatening issues. After hours? Wait til morning at all costs. Sooooooooo many people utilize the ED as their pcp which isn't surprising considering the average Healthcare literary level is of a 7th grader for most Americans. $1500-2000 is a pretty average emergency department visit bill across the nation for just seeing a physician/apn. If you got labs or any other testing done, jack it up some more. CT or MRI, you're fucked and guaranteed to hit that deductible and out of pocket max. It sucks when you're getting charged astronomical prices but unfortunately that's the way US healthcare billing works. They charge 10x for something, then the insurance negotiates different prices, and you get a modified bill. It's all a bunch of crap how shit is billed. Every facility has different algorithms.

Curious what was your diagnosis that they gave you? What did they do?

It sounds like you have a high deductible health care insurance plan which many of us do. If that's the case, I'd recommend looking into an HSA or if you're still in school have your parents do that.

But in terms of debt collection, after 6-12 months the health system will turn your bill over to a collection agency. It depends on the hospital. Some collection agencies report to the credit bureaus but many do not for health care expenses. Honestly you could call to ask. You can also negotiate with debt collectors for a discounted price (e.g. 50% off) and demand and get confirmation in writing that they do not report or remove the report from the credit bureau. Also many hospitals will be willing to work with you and reduce your bill if you complain enough. At the very least, pretty much all hospitals will have a way for you to start a zero interest payment plan for your bill ($125/month over 12 months is a lot nicer than a surprise $1500 pay in 3 weeks bullshit notice). Many Healthcare bills go unpaid which is probably part of the reason costs are so high; to account for the gabronies who won't or can't pay.

If it does get forwarded to a debt collector and you start getting phone calls and letters, unless it's on your credit report, just don't reply assuming it's been a couple months. If it is on your credit report, and you wish to get it removed, then you will have to negotiate with the debt collector, who is usually a piece of shit person. If you don't care that it's on your report and don't wish to pay, it will be gone in 7 years, however if you contact the debt collector or do anything with that debt or pay any portion of it, that 7 year clock resets.

I've also had a few unfortunate times where my debt got forwarded to collections and they either stopped calling me or I paid them off for a fraction of the initial cost.

If you get a debt collection letter or call always contact your health system to make sure they did indeed send it off to collections, how much, and to what company. Very important to avoid scams.

Fuuck, well next time I won't go to the ER, but I passed out in my friends car on the highway and he took me there. They diagnosed it as a heart murmur and and to do an x-ray. The biggest cost is just for entering the ER which cost 1k? what the fuck is that. I am gonna call the debt collector and see if they will negotiate a bit. So if I don't pay it, it will be scrubbed in 7 years? I honestly have no idea what my credit is and could care less, I don't plan on buying a house in the US and only buy shitty used cars for cash. I'm gonna annoy the shit out of the hospital, until they lower that fucking bill. Thanks for all the help, I was in the dark completely.

I mean if you were unconscious that sounds like your friend made the right move. Even if you go to urgent care, they could still refer you to the ED. Did you get an EKG (all the sticky pads on your chest)? Cha ching. Xray.... Radiologist gonna read it.. Cha ching.... Blood work... Cha ching...

Not sure how severe pain relates to a heart murmur but interesting. If you passed out because of heart issues that's no bueno and I'm guessing they may have referred you to a cardiologist? Maybe not idk but if they did, don't ignore it

Also don't neglect your credit man. Eventually you might need it. Not now. Maybe not 30 years from now. But maybe. So don't take credit lightly. It's very important and even impacts apartment applications.

My advice would be to try to work it out with the hospital and lower your bill and/or get on a payment plan. Find out if they do report it to collection, who would that be and would they report it to your credit profile. Then make your decision

If your planning to live past 30, your credit score is important and should care about it.
Credit score pretty much decidedly how much banks can charge you interest when you do anything adult like. Credit card interest rate? They check your credit score. Want a loan to open a small business? They check your credit score. Your want a small personal loan? They checked your credit score and if it’s shitty they could deny you all together.

I had the same mindset for years but I'm much more about paying my bills now, however late. Credit is hard to build and easy to lose, and if I ever want a mortgage on a house then I'll need good credit. There's no easy way around healthcare and medical bills, just various degrees of shitty.

If it's urgent and can't wait until morning for your pcp but not life threatening and still while urgent care is open, go there first. If it's something they can treat, they will, although not all urgent cares are created equal. I would put more faith in an urgent care owned by a big health system than a private one. Good example: my wife got bit by a kid this year at work and it got infected. She hadn't set up a pcp yet after we moved, so had to go to urgent care. One place said they can't do bites and she should go to the ED. Knowing that's horse shit and all she needs is some antibiotics, I told her to try another one. Whadaya know they treated her. Hence not all urgent cares are created equal. Plus if you go to an urgent care and they can't treat it, they will just refer you and you won't be charged assuming it's within the same health system.

When you go to an emergency department it is a triage system where the sickest patients are seen first. You're assigned an acuity score based on your signs and symptoms and that will determine how soon you get seen. Cut your arm off with a chainsaw, immediate care. Have a sore throat? Better download some movies cuz you're gonna be there a while. If you can avoid going to an ED by hitting up your pcp or urgent care first, that is always preferred, unless it truly is an emergency.

This is pretty indicative of how healthcare billing and pricing works. I'm not an expert but:

The reason a hospital bandage costs $35, IV Bag $95 etc... is because those are the prices that insurance companies will cover. The precise mechanics and how we got to this situation is longwinded, but Hospitals set their prices as if insurance is going to foot the bill. So, when insurance doesn't cover it and the individual is responsible, it's truly fucked. Hospitals know that almost nobody is actually going to repay insane bills, so they're almost always willing to work with individuals.

They're not being altruistic, they're just looking at the bottom line: in your case, you went from wanting to pay 0% to paying 65%, so that's money they would have missed out on. Obviously it's still fucked and a pain in the ass process, but everyone should seek financial aid and never accept a full bill by themselves.

Good to hear you handled it. I had the same shit happen to me where I got charged like $3000 for 5 stitches in my finger at the ER because urgent care was closed. They gave me a shot without really asking about it first then used that as an excuse to bill the incident as Level III or whatever the fuck to up the cost. I knew a lawyer and he got involved and we ended up going to collections and negotiated it down.

Interesting, thanks for the reply! Just did some research myself as well and that's really interesting. My health insurance does not pay for urgent care AT ALL and only emergency room visits, so it piqued my curiosity. I don't think it's contradictory in any way because my insurance does a bunch of other weird shit as well. Great thing to know for everybody else!

I haven't paid it and am not going to, as I believe they just charged me for random shit. So can I go to jail for avoding medical bills or like whats the deal? I keep getting called by a debt collector, but I sure as hell ain't paying them, cause fuck these big business trying to fuck over a college kid.

Yes, you can go to jail. Your only real option is to dispute the charges with the help of a lawyer which you probably won't win. A collections agency CAN, garnish your wages, negatively affect your credit, and result in a warrant for your arrest. Your best bet is to pay it and make it go away.

I just wouldn't pay it. i had a $79 bill from an xray on my hand last year (insurance paid most but i had to pay this part) and i've just ignored the collection notices i initially got and i think it's kinda been forgotten/ignored now.

People like you are big part of the reason healthcare prices are so inflated in the US

So many people go to the emergency room and never pay their bill so that cost has to be absorbed by everyone else who is actually paying

They’re called deadbeats

Go to the hospital and get an itemized bill so you can see what all you were charged for. Dispute anything that's not accurate. From there I would try to get on a payment plan with the hospital so you can pay your bill back in smaller amounts and not get fucked over by a $1k bill at once.
