GoPro Advice

I recently scored a free GoPro Hero 4 and I was wondering if you guys had any advice for getting some good ski footage on it. I got a few basic accessories for it such as a helmet mount, retractable filming stick, and a case. What other budget-minded accessories I should look into? And do you guys have any tips on capturing some good footage?

don't worry man, I'm gonna show all my friends a 8-minute video of me skiing and constantly remind them that it looked waaaaaaaay steeper in real life.

GoPro noob here. Don't make the mistakes I did.

1) Practice your angles before going and on footage that doesnt matter to make sure it comes out good. I thought I had the angle right and tested beforehand but not on the slopes. I made that mistake and have plenty of poorly angled shots either way too high or low.
2) Bring lots of batteries and keep them warm until use
3) Like a retard I put my battery in mine at 0F. Rode a lift up to a traverse to another lift. Got one of the first chairs on a 2ft pow day. Turned on the camera at the top. Got 7 seconds of footage. Don't be a fucking retard like me. Put the batteries in when you need them. If you're not running the camera for an extended period of time, take the battery out. Always check the battery before any footage you want to capture to make sure it will last the whole time.
4) If you run a chest mount at all, beware of backpack straps. I ruined so much footage from a strap flapping across half the camera view....
5) BEST advice: saw this on NS and am so thankful. Always always always tether your camera. I took a real gnarly fall last year and got up to find my GoPro dangling over my goggles. It woulda been lost forever if not for the tether. Just get some micro-cord off Amazon. Cheap and comes in all colors and patterns.

Oh I won't. I got a sweet deal on some K2 Apaches from Christi sports that will look sick with my Ruroc. HMU if you'll be at Keystone and lap some groomers. I'll be wearing a Tim Tebow broncos jersey and have a red Jansport school backpack on. My families annual trip is his spring break!!!!!!

Keep the gopro in your jacket until you are ready to go.

Are you filming a friend? Do you think that you're too close to them with the camera? Wrong. It's always closer.

Keep it smooth, esp with the gopro 4 haha I mean everyone is so adjusted and the standing is smooth af POV footy with the hero7/8/other companies but you'll defs be able to bank some sick stuff.

Back up battery

know your wide angle, frame rate, and resolution settings

utilize 1 button mode to save battery. Either on and filming or turned off.

Keep your expectations low. Also if you can learn to use protune. The automatic settings on gopros can be really bad at times.

get a gimbal if you can, it'll help it not look like a gopro 4
not sure if they picture profiles or anything but research the best settings and make sure they align with any post production you'll be doing
if you're trying to make a proper edit then plan out angles and make sure you know the field of view without needing a monitor - that way you wont get footage where you're actually 20ft away but it looks like 100ft because of the fisheye

take extra care to clean and clamp your helmet mounts during glue set in , tether as well!


foam windscreen makes a world of difference for sound , it works over 60mph for me

Looks like you already have that mount on pretty good, but always make sure the camera or the mount is not gonna fall off under any circumstances before skiing with it. I just lost my old GoPro because the whole mount fell of when I was going down a cliff area. It's still probably up there somewhere, but I could have avoided losing it if I made sure that it was completely secure. Never assume that the adhesive is always going to hold.

I only wear it when I intend to film, and I check my shadow and sometimes feel for it on my helmet t make sure it’s still there

that was attempt number 2, I crashed on the landing on the first one. I did one more after this one and was able to ski out of it. I still landed in the backseat though. I went back to another drop I felt familiar with and practiced what you mentioned in your comment. I'll be back there this Wednesday and Saturday so I think I'll stomp it. Thanks for the advice man!
