Race boot in park

i just switched to a 130 salomon race boot and my oh my everything is easier especially buttersand switch landing.
Stiff boot gang waddup


I feel like I never have to even think about the terrain I'm on with stiff boots.
I focus less and sometimes never on what is going on below my knee when I wear a stiff boot.

I am using bigger muscles to aim and direct my legs.

With soft boot, your stance needs to be much stronger. What if you train only is soft boots and then use stiff boots in competition, your stance always correcting for stability can strengthen balance, then u have stronger balance than guy who trained with stiff boot?

this is an underappreciated piece of advice, many park skiers would feel a wicked improvement in control by switching to a 120 or 130 flex boot

Yeah but at the end of the day, i really dont want my fellow competitors showing up to a slopestyle comp with boots any stiffer than 70 if it gives me a deadly significant advantage.

Normally for big mountain I use 130 flex. It sucks cause my touring boot is 130 but loses a bit of drive from the walk mode

stiffer flex is a lot less relevant to performance then the narrower last that race boots have

started wearing stiff boots when i last skied park and found having more control and power upper mtn was a lot more fun for some reason and just started skiing that more. it just feels right being on top of everything and being able to power through turns

Those are Redster Club Sport 130s, which he (and the rest of the Wells fam) has been using for a long time. But, he just recently switched to the Hawx Ultra 130 a few weeks ago because we have a new liner technology that will melt your brain. More on that soon...

But, a most of our athletes are in Club Sport or Hawx Ultra 130s. I think Gus is one of the few skiers in a Hawx Prime 130.

I literally just received this years boot because of the switch to PU for the shell over grilamid. could we work a deal to just swap in the new liner? PM me!

I had the atomic hawx xtd 120 boot.
It literally exploded into peices.
I landed switch and the walkmode ripped out. The zeppas shattered into a million pieced, i mute grabbed all the bottom buckles off and 120 felt like 50 after about 10 days.

I'll be rocking a 130 in the park this year, been riding Nordica Strider 120 in the park for the last few season, obviously using them for all mountain skiing as well, but definitely agree, way more control with stiffer booots

Just snagged my Lang RX 130's, literally the best choice of my life. So much control and power compared to any other boot. Changes the way you ski.

I had A stiff boot and I got a Stress fracture from using them. Side note (I was 13-15 years old and beginer park skier). I probably did not have the right strength to support them. now I am 17 and I am a track star and ranked in my country for cyclocross. so legs got bigger. But I do find my full tilt way better to ski in and I don't have shin problems anymore.

funnily enough my full tilts gave me the most shin bang.

To be clear - just using stiff boots because other people do is a sure fire way to get shin bang. Sames goes for using boots that are too soft for you. Your example proves that a boot with the wrong flex will be uncomfortable.

You should ski the stiffest boot that you can still properly flex. That might be 130, that might be 80. And most importantly don't pick a flex based on where you ski on the mountain. Match the flex to you & your needs and you will be golden.

Also, ive heard ankle mobility plays a role in this, right? Don’t wanna be over flexing them ankles.

Well I ride 90 flex and they are ok for me they are fun and fit my feet nicely

Last time I tried an overlap boot (not a race boot but it was rated 130) I could definitely appreciate the power and precision over my then FT first chair 10s. However the boot did not fit well at all and ended up going with Kryptons. They fit my feet damn near perfect with just a liner heat mold and skis stronger than the FTs, but I still think about what it would be like in a race boot.

I'm still skiing Nordica Dobermann WC EDT 130 (93 last width) with a Powerwrap Intuition liner in there. Great for park, great for pow, my foot is locked into place. Zero heel lift, full energy transmission, and I never get shin bang. If I ever switch boots it will probably be to another race boot. Something that I don't see mentioned enough is that if you take a harsh landing off a drop or jump the stiffness really helps to absorb some of the shock, knowing you can throw all of your body weight into your cuff and not have it completely taco is amazing.

I switched to a race boot last year and was really skeptical about it, but honestly I think it has improved my skiing. A lot more control on rails. You feel more one with your skis if that makes sense

I have qrap liners in 4 buckle boot and it was a challenge the first 5 ski days maybe, try putting liner on first then with boot spread open with both hands shove foot in

Oh yeah it's a struggle. I usually get a new powerwrap molded every season or two and depending on the shop it sometimes takes 3 boot fitters to get me in the shell. Last guy I went to was pro though and managed it all by himself. I've also had less experienced shops have to remold because they couldn't get me in the shell properly and the liner wrinkled weirdly, then they start trying tricks like using silicone spray, plastic wrap etc. It can be a challenge sometimes.
