What’s up with all the goobers riding AT setups in the resort?
I don’t understand, I see so many goobs at the resort riding AT setups and getting on the lifts. I’m sick of seeing these fuckin goobers everywhere. I’ve seen more kingpins then pivots lately
Saw the ultimate gaper power couple last season. G3 ions on some black crows with form fitting pants and patagucci puffy's power pizza'ing down the shitfuck groomer right before the lift. I honestly think they just purchased the most expensive ski gear they could find thinking it would be best for them. Or maybe they just toured flat stuff so much that they didn't know how to ski. idk. They seemed to be having fun though, which is rad so more power to them but damn they looked like goobers.
rode the chair with a guy with pin bindings the other day. about to buy my first touring setup and was curious about skins so asked him about this, and he didn't know what I was talking about. I'm fairly certain he'd never toured a day in his life.
If I see another dynafit speed setup on resort with those bullshit little buckle tethers I'm going to puke. Or the guy who has the entire Salomon catalogue on his body from head to toe. If only ski shop employees made commission.
I've definitely rode my touring setup (kingpins) inbounds quite a few times. Almost always when I'm working though because I have to hike quite a bit and when standing around moving gear all day it's really nice to have walk mode and light boots
Yeah, the shit is getting very common in Colorado. Most of the gear looks new, too. Apparently the touring segment of the gear industry is growing super fast - which is funny.
If you ski much at all, its stupid AF to use dedicated touring gear in bounds.

But maybe I’m guilty too? Sometimes I rock a kingpin setup on deep days but generally I have an inbounds set up.
I also don’t really care to see that shit. It’s kinda funny and no matter who buys in, it equals more R&D money for touring that makes the gear I want more awesome.
Now as of this season, I exclusively use my Hoji boots for all skiing action. They are that good!

SkiBum.I have 1 ski. I use it for both AT and in bounds skiing.

damn straight i've never hiked a mountain to ski before, catch me drinking beers on a lift and lappin the park with the boys. Enjoy spending hours walking uphill hahahahahah
I saw this at a tiny hill in Ontario. It was hysterical. Buddy had the full touring ski/binding (didn't see what brands - probably DPS or something), skin tight pants, leather jacket and capped off with a ruroc. Took him 10 minutes to get onto his skis.
If I'm on a trip I'll usually only bring my touring skis (if it's a flight) so that might explain a few of them. When I was living in Whistler I definitely saw a lot of people rocking them that were definitely local or at least from Vancouver. I chalk that up to some peoples only pair of thick skis happen to be their touring ones so that's what they have to use.

I see so many people skiing on pins at park city and it seems like its their daily ski, lots of shifts which are whatever but i have seen so many DPS's with pins this week at work, waiting for someone to come in asking why they keep ejecting.

I shudder to think how many have their toes straight up locked most the time.
Eh not really just a lot of them are clearly not people out touring based on their skill level, i havent skied a pin setup yet but seems like its not a fun inbounds setup unless you take it slow.
Because young 30ish software dev couples without a kid have a lot of disposable income and instagram says the outdoorsy lifestyle is cool. Same thing happened in surfing but with rich pseudohipsters. $1000 9' single fins, super cool resin tint etc, no leash cause they're too cool for that. But they somehow can't catch a wave or even ride the thing. Certainly looks sweet in insta photos though.

Park city has more than plenty of those types, have the best shit, love the outdoors so they say, but complain about weather, skis not being good enough etc.

I don't think you're the subject of this thread. The people I'm talking about tour up the mountain and then do skidded turns down a groomed blue run on their dps/black diamond pow skis
Sure, there are more gapers on tech setups than ever before. But honestly, that makes me very happy because every one of those purchases (probably at MSRP) represents more R&D money to help push the development of better, safer, lighter, more reliable tech bindings. I'd rather have that market segment see growth than just having them buy Squires, or whatever they were using before the industry decided pins were the coolest. Remember back when anything with a pin toe was automatically called a "dynafit"? I like having more options.
A big part of it is the way newer 50/50 style equipment (mostly boots and bindings) is being marketed - and how said marketing unintentionally filters down into true AT equipment. Especially with regard to the Kingpin all of K2's shouting about DIN certification and an uncompromised downhill feel exists to make you believe the bindings will feel and perform just like a standard alpine binding. Unless you've already ridden an AT setup or do a good amount of research you'd never know how different a any pin toe feels regardless of fancy heel tech.
For shame, I fell for this a few years ago when the Kingpin launched. I wanted to dip my toes into the backcountry scene, built a Kingpin setup that I often rode on softer in-bounds days, and I was confused as to why I was getting bucked around more than usual in anything resembling chop.
Couple that with the rise of 50/50 style boots, and I think people new to the scene then ignorantly expect all AT gear to perform like alpine equipment. Ignorance isn't necessarily an excuse, but I do think it's an explanation.

I used to work at Timberline; and I’d see goobers every morning in the summer who want to Peak Mt Hood (they would barely make it to the pearly gates before realizing they should have started hiking earlier) and then they would literally struggle with the ski down.. some would even take their skis off and slide down on their ass when the racers were starting to set up their gates... it’s like come on mane if you’re gonna hike up a ski resort and you plan to get down at least know how to get down!!
I have been setting up a decent number of dad tour rigs this fall who really don’t have much idea what they are getting into and also have little intent of even doing much real backcountry skiing. I’m in Atlantic Canada though so opportunities are limited anyways, and respect for wanting to get some more exercise in and avoid lift lines.
Recently a mom was looking for touring setups for a 9 and 11 year old with plans to go to the Chic Chocs, which to me seems super whack and dangerous considering my experiences with the conditions up there

thats the shit that gets me, i have marker frame bindings on some old armadas and resort boots, and the amazon workers from Seattle with dps and the full dynafit kit always quip, "i see you've brought the whole kitchen with you" or some bull shit remark. Then you see them skiing and they are wedge christying and back seat thinking they look like Cody Townsend. I mean Jesus Christ just go skiing and enjoy your walk in the woods, stop comparing sock weight

I don't understand the ultralight trend unless you're competing. Personally, I like the workout touring gives me, so I'm all for extra weight, it just makes the workout more challenging and helps me getting the legs I need to charge on the way down, win/win.

I would invest in a super light setup if I was doing a bunch of touring in the east, most stuff is super inaccessible so you're doing a big flat tour through the woods to get to the mountain unlike the west where you usually just drive up a mtn pass

I’ve used stolen rental poles or mismatched found/hand me down poles for like 15 years, but with a gear allowance now, I grabbed some adjustable black diamond poles and they aiight. I swear I’ve broken them already though.
But yes, I’m the douche hitting rails with adjustable poles lol.
