john18061806It's not freestyle but unrelated thought:
I want to see ski cross but not on a course, on a mountain.
Imagine a mass start of 50 mountain rats off vodka redbulls at the top of the mountain. There are no rules except the rule that the first one to the bottom wins.
DeebieSkeebiesDaron Rahlves Bonsai Tour.
john18061806I saying with no gates, whoever finds the fastest line down wins.
DeebieSkeebiesunsactioned would be dope, resorts would shit their pants if they saw 50+ riders all dropping at once lol

snowmosexualMaybe Whistler would do it? They have that mountain bike death race.

finderRecently got into watching WRC and it got me thinking. Variable terrain that isn't perfectly maintained like most race courses/ski cross courses would be chill. Races that have thick trees, bumps, pow etc in one course/stage/run. Courses could have like a broad boundary so that there is opportunity to pick lines that are faster than others.
Only issue would be with pow is that the person setting first tracks would be a lot slower than someone who bombs through their tracks. Maybe regulate this with start order? Regulate run order? Ban skiing in other peoples tracks? Set a base track? Idk maybe not pow...
ConesForBreakfasWRC as in car rallies? I agree I think something like that would be epic. A bunch of people zooming down a glade with hard patchy snow and huge craters and ditches would be so fun to watch. And they don't get to scout the course first, they have to make decisions on the fly.
finderAbsolutely. I like the quick decision making aspect. Maybe have incentive for skiers to use the same pair of skis for the season. Maybe like point deductions for needing to replace skis, so that competitors will actually use skis that can regularly handle that type of skiing, rather than pros getting a brand new pair every run. Homologation requirements based on size of the company could keep it fair for unsponsored competitors; In order for a ski to be legal, the company would have to produce a certain number of the identical ski, available for anyone to buy. For example, ON3P would need to produce a smaller number of a ski than the number that Volkl would have to produce.
Some might read this and think adding homologation rules is dumb, but imo it would hold manufacturers accountable build durable skis, instead of just giving their athletes an over built custom ski with a generic top sheet. I'm not saying to regulate turn radius or any physical attributes of a ski, but keep it fair such that
1. Anyone can buy the ski that the top competitors are riding
2. Give niche brands much deserved attention
3. Companies would only receive deserved results based marketing. A high performing ski isn't worth shit if it can't withstand a high performing skier for an extended amount of time.
Seems like the comp scene seems to be so disliked by the NS community partially by the absurd amount of money needed to be competitive. This could possibly be more relatable to the average skier, and emphasize skier ability over sponsorships.
That was a bit of an incoherent ramble, but comp skiing would be much more interesting to watch if it was actually relatable. Most people can't afford 10 pairs of race skis, but most skiers have a pair of skis they like, and some sketchy lines at their home resort.
