Need help with Ski and Boot choice

Whats up guys,

Im currently in the process and deciding on my first pair of owned skis. I just moved out to Colorado and have been a directional powder/off piste skier for the most part in my 17 years of skiing, but am looking to get on a pair of twin tips and start working more on my park game this season. Unfortunately, multiple setups is out of the price range so i'm looking for something that can hold its own on resort powder days while still allowing me to learn some new tricks this year. I'm pretty interested in the ON3P Jeffrey 108s and the CT 3.0s, but I'm not super informed on ski gear and don't really understand what would be the difference between the two. Could anyone with some more information maybe drop some knowledge on me, or recommend another ski that I should consider? Also, from what I understand, a stiffer boot provides you with more stability when dropping cliffs and stuff like that, but does a softer boot have any benefit other than being more comfortable? Sorry for the essay, ive rented demo skis and not asked questions for every family trip of my childhood/teens, so now I have very little knowledge in regards to technology.

For boots, go to good bootfitter, do some research in the areas around you plenty of good fitters in CO. A softer flex boot will help in trees, bumps etc since it is easier to engage and push the boot. A stiffer boot helps on steeper rougher terrain.

As far as skis, be honest with yourself how much time do you actually plan on spending in the park? all mountain? where on the mountain? A 100+ waisted ski for a relatively new park skier wont necessarily be the easiest to learn on. How do you ski outside of the park?

I definitely plan on spending at least 30% of my time in the park, especially being in boulder and close enough to rip half days at Eldora. Im really focused on learning some freestyle stuff this year and have been working out, stretching, and getting reps in on the trampoline. Outside of the park, ill be spending almost the entirety of my time in the trees/high alpine looking for fresh snow and cliffs. I ski quite aggressively... Thanks for the quick response and the insight on the boots, ill definitely be hitting a boot fitter soon.

This may not be quite correct but for the price of either of those two ski choices you could get a pair of discounted more common skis and a good used pair of park skis.

This is good advice. I’ll be the first to recommend ON3Ps to anyone but if you want to progress in the park being that you’re new to it, a 105+ waist is going to be more difficult. That being said it’s not a crazy idea, just may be a bit more intimidating learning 270 ons and such. You can always find good deals on used park skis that still have a lot of life left.

I’m on the East coast and have the 98 Kartel for East coast/park skiing and just bought the 108 Jeffrey this year for trips. I’ll likely ski the Jeffrey a bit in the park but don’t feel like ruining them as much as my Kartels have been destroyed from rail abuse. But for the past 4 seasons the 98 Kartel has done well skiing park, all mountain and the occasional 5+” powder days I’ve had on trips to Colorado and Utah.

As for boots go find a boot fitter. There should be plenty out there. I went to A Racers Edge out in Breck a few years back and it made all the difference.

Thank you so much, this advice was killer. Going to hunt NS, ebay, craigslist, etc. for a used pair of park skis and then get a pair of 105-110s for snowy days and other kinds of skiing. One last question, in your opinion, how difficult is it to take tricks learned on a pair of park skis, (lets say 90-95 because idk how i feel about a super skinny base), and take them to a pair of all mountain twin tips suited more for the west coast (105-110)

I can’t really say since I haven’t skied on the 108s yet. But going from the 88 waist on my Filthy Riches to the 98 Kartel there really wasn’t a change in difficulty on rail tricks. Might be because I got better through those years. You’ll adapt to a wider ski pretty quickly.
