My brother’s gf calls LTC “just a giant ad”

I don’t know if this has happened to anyone else, but have you ever showed one of your friends or just someone you know a ski movie and they told you that the skiers only did it for money and that the entire movie was just an ad for whatever company sponsored the skier? While I was watching LTC in the living room on the tv, my brother and his gf come and sit to watch as well.

So my brother’s girlfriend starts going off and calls LTC a giant ad for Line. I disagree with her, and tell her that obviously they promote their skis but they only ever do an ad reel or ski showcase at the beginning of the episode, and it’s only about 1-2 minutes long. The rest is Line Travelling Circus, same as it always was.

Look, I don’t care if you fucking studied marketing. LTC is not a giant fucking ad. This had happened a bit ago and I also watched Sammy C’s new segment at the time. She also called that an ad and said Sammy was paid to ski.

Anyways I have no clue what I should do. Commit a hate crime? Kill her? Throw her into a lake?

All sponsored ski content is pretty much advertising. embrace it and enjoy it- it's great that companies will front the cash to put out enjoyable content that makes folks want to buy their stuff. There would be a whole heck of a lot fewer professional ski athletes if companies didn't advertise.

I could see that .. the skis are really branded too so there's a lot of that in your face but Jake (filmer, editor) is never explicitly told to add fluff product shots in the episode (besides the actual ad in the beginning). LTC is the thing we spend the most on in marketing and has been since season 2 (the first season was basically a trial because we didn't think they'd actually keep it up. Really happy they did! Still so damn entertaining.

PS: it has always been a stretch to produce this much with just LINE, we would love it to be a little more of an ad for some sponsor to help out .. Totinos where you at?!

Your brothers GF sounds like a pretentious asshole. LTC and Sammy C are not in it for the money, its a means to an end. The sponsors let them do what they love for a living and provide us with high quality ski content.

There's a lot of skiers in their vids that aren't riding lines also. The majority are on lines, but I think a lot of other marketing guys wouldn't allow other skis to be in their videos. Ur brothers gf is right, but just cuz she's right doesn't mean she's not contentious

To Line credit they never ask us to blatantly advertise Line while we are filming TC. The most they ever ask us to do is put on a Line hoodie or T shirt. None of it is mandatory and we never stage any product shots.

Of course it's an ad. Line is a business and their spending decisions are made based on potential return on investments, they're not giving the LTC crew charity money, they're paying for that because of the exposure it gives to the brand.

The reason why LTC is so popular is that it's great skiing content, so people watch it, Line gets exposure, and the crew makes a buck or two to be able to keep skiing. Everyone wins.

It is one of those good ads that people like to watch but you are 100% advertising skis. IME it works too. At one point in time many years ago I had just bought a pair of Salomon skis and then I spent the next day watching videos including LTC and then I called the shop and said I wanted to take them back and get cooler skis and they were also Line dealer so they had me come in and swapped them for some Lines

And let's not be naive, the same goes for Sammy or any other skier. No company will pay you simply based on your skill level or as a reward for how hard you send it. If you don't win contests, get parts or push content to people's feed, they won't sponsor you.

In other words, you can be the best skier on the mountain if all you do is ski alone in the woods not worrying about the gram, no one will pick you up. Brands put a lot of pressure on skiers to put content out so kids see them use their stuff and they can in return push some product and make $$$.

I'm sure plenty of sponsored athletes would rather simply just go shred sometimes but feel obligated to grab a nice shot to feed their IG, please sponsors and put food on the table.
