Any of you Snowmakers?

It will be cold. It will be loud. The hours will suck. You get to make everyone really happy. :)

The hours pay etc will never be "the mintest" but it's a fun gig and important af to the mountain.

I do early season snowmaking before I jump in a cat. I dig it, have had some good times, and met some awesome people. Hours, pay, lack of sleep, physical grinding sometimes, can al be rough. Worth doing though if you're considering.

Hopefully your hill has some decent sleds for you to brapp around on.

Depends on who you’re working with.
At my last resort, making snow was pretty miserable. Was always stuck with the salty old guys that had been there for 30+ years.
Actually just started at a different resort this year and it’s a completely different atmosphere. Granted I’m only doing it for a month or so, I definitely have had fun.

Snowmaking is a huge factor to a lot of resorts opening so it’s kind of cool to be a part of it. Working SM is also a great way to get into a cat at a lot of smaller resorts where the grooming/sm departments are combined.

If you’re ok with long shifts, no real schedule and putting your body through a freeze-thaw cycle then send it. Bring some beers and get ready for some sketchy snow mobile rides and endless digging.

This. Mtn ops is a good in. Snowmakers finish early and if you do a decent job mtns look for other roles to slide you into. Making snow,mentioning you want to groom, doing some ride alongs is a great way to make it happen.

Some big mtns will higher completely green rookie cat ops but a lot of places it's way easier to get in through snowmaking.

i would be doing it at a very small mountain, but most of the snowmakers do all the hard labor kinda stuff. I don’t believe any of them groom. But we do have nice skidoo sleds to braaap around on:)

Was a grooming and snowmaking manager for years. Still got out here and there. It’s an experience. Not for everyone.


Most places usually run two shifts. 12 hour shifts. Take the overtime when it’s there. Do you have a second job after snowmaking or something lined up because once January comes snowmaking is usually done most places.
