I'm currently looking to get rid of my truck and I've been looking at Foresters mainly a 2017 2.5i premium. My truck is semi reliable but also semi falling apart. How reliable will a Forester be? This will be my first Subie so is there anything I should specific I should be looking for (blow-by, suspension etc.)?
Owned a 2010 Forestar for the past two 1/2 years. Overall pretty reliable, made it from New Hampshire to Texas to Montana and back again twice so it does well for the long term. Just need general maintainence like all vehicles.
Ive driven all over in my 02 and 06. Maine to Miami. CO/CA. Driven more than is probably healthy.
Make sure you do the head gaskets early.
I prefer the newer outbacks to foresters and haven't owned newer than 06 but pretty fucking good cars. Also have driven through some ridic storms in the Sierras with em.

My truck now is 4x4 and diesel hence why I want to go to some different. I spend more time and money on maintenance with this truck than anything else. And honestly a 3/4 ton diesel like I have is way over kill for what I do with it.

Subarus typically have good reliability. I have a 2006 Impreza 2.5 i with about 160,000 hard miles and its still running well. Only maintenance that wasnt my fault was the 100,000 mile timing belt and of course head gaskets. I think they figured out the headgasket thing by 2017 but time will tell. Be careful getting a CVT transmission, I dont really trust those.
I have a 2.5x and it has been reliable. It if totally blows up it will be a big inconvenience but it is a 2005 and around here it is pretty cheap to just buy another engine and even less if I can wait the shipping time and buy one in Japan. You can also swap it out for a 2.0 for even better gas mileage and there are a ton of the 2.0s in Japan in great shape for cheap.
I have come to realize that you can drive it like a small truck and haul around crap and I basically never use my pick up which I am most likely going to get rid of this year.
I'll sell private party though. It is really pretty easy to sell a car private party and get way more money than the dealer will give you. Just get one of those counterfeit pens and make them pay you in cash and do the transaction in a safe public place with some cameras and witnesses so you don't get scammed.
Cars can last a long time but are also disposable so I try to keep that in mind
Definitely look at how often the previous owner was getting service. Subaru had a huge oil consumption problem that I've still heard carried onto the 2017 cars a bit. Otherwise just the basics. Make sure all service done, good brakes, tires, etc.

I bought a 2016 2.5i last winter. So far, Im very happy with it. 6L for 100km, that pretty awesome for a SUV.
Other than non leather seats, thing runs like a charm. I even took it up to Balface in September.
Forget hauling huge trailers and check the oil cause older versions like to burn a little more oil than the average car.
JGC is number one on the list of most American cars, followed by the odyssey, ridgeline, and passport. Though I can't say I'm want to own any of those or a forester for that matter.

CatdickBojanglesIts mostly just to and from my resort so like 10 miles. I just want to to keep my back cargo area and seats from getting soaked from wet skis.
Hit up craigslist or ebay. I got a thule rack with locks for $30 bucks. But I'd still recommend a box, quieter on the highway and you can use it for things besides skis in the summer. It's awesome throwing muddy or wet gear on your roof instead of in your ride.
When the hell did they get rid of the "fake manual" paddle shifters? So useful in mountains to save your brakes. My car has it and it's amazing. Literally the only model that has it now is the touring model. Not even the limited model...

Yeah I got the premium and it doesn't have it. I wish it did but the adaptive cruise control does the job now.
