Recently I've started fooling around with video a lot more, and I've seen a lot of people advocating for the 180 degree shutterspeed rule (30fps, shoot in 60/1 shutterspeed) in normal videography. However I couldn't find anything about the subject when talking about skiing.

Now I've noticed that when I see certain mountainbiking videos, the video ends up being a bit jittery at times, and too blurry, to the point where it's almost painful to watch.

Also I personally find 24 fps to be too little for ski videos that I've made myself, as you can too clearly see the frames.

- What framerates are most ski videos exported in?

- Do they always follow the 180 degree rule in professional ski videos?

180 degrees distorts the image so much I think your spewing when you say that. Iv found 1080 or 4K at 60 to be good and 120 for slow motion shots.

I’m not an expert but I will be playing around with this to I think that a little over 120 when shooting 60 might give you a nice crisper image I mean we are moving a lot faster than the average walking speed so

Just wait until you get out there and play around a bit you will probably find that there are different scenarios that require different FPS and SS like say if you want to make someone look like they are going faster you can turn down SS and if you are going to freeze frame a spot in the clip bump up SS

It comes down to preference, most filmmakers will use a "180 degree" shutter angle aka double your frame rate. When I first started filming, i didnt care about my shutter speed, would shoot 1/500 or higher sometimes, tbh the video doesn't look that different. 95% of people watching your video wont notice, but you will so its up to you.

Most filmmakers export 24fps as well, I've seen plenty of people upload 30 or 60 fps videos online, again up to your preference.

To me, filming with a 180 degree shutter and exporting 24fps is the way to go. If you need to break the 180 degree shutter rule, its okay, if you want to export 30fps/60fps to make it look smoother, thats okay as well.

Cheers! I just found out the kimbosessions video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnF9yOnZUHY&t=179s) is exported in 50p and I haven't thought of that video as any different than any other ski vids, so I guess most people wont notice a difference.

I guess if you have a ton of motion, camera movement etc, it might be better with 50p, and if you have a lot of stabilized shots then 25 / 24 is probably better.

Gonna experiment a bit this winter and see which one I prefer.

I only shoot 60fps, as so many other filmers. Filming specific shots at certain frame rates is a good practice, but I've never found it worthwhile.

If you're filming sports, capturing high paced action and going to be slowing down in post you wouldn't want to follow 180 rule. When shooting 60fps I aim for a shutter of 1/500. Less motion blur, personal preference tho

Yeah if you're gonna shoot say 120fps, 1/240 would be the "proper" way to do it, but I shoot 60fps 1/125, sometime 1/160 but never any higher or else its just a very clear picture, which some people like.

I treat the 180° shutter "rule" as a rule and not a suggestion 95% of the time, and also film in the framerate that's needed for the final exported shot (so no 60fps filming when the end product isn't slo motion). It makes for way more stressful days of filming due to constantly thinking about and switching around framerates, and keeping the shutter speed adjusted to 180°, but IMO the efforts are always worth it. I can otherwise easily tell when footage wasn't shot with the "proper" framerate and/or shutter speed and it def bugs me. Also always 24fps export, never strayed from that

Those movies are done in 25/50p because it was all in Euro land. Europe and much of the rest of the world generally shoot in PAL (25 or 50) whereas the US, Japan, and a few other places tend to go with the 24,30 or 60 framerate situations (NTSC). This is because of the way that the power gets pumped to monitors / TVs. Here, in the US, it is a 60-hertz signal, so the cameras would tend to want to shoot around that refresh rate. In PAL countries, the power comes through in a 50-hertz signal so that's why they shoot in 25 or 50 fps.

So bottomline... trying out 25 or 50 fps on your footage here in the states will only end up looking weird on TVs when you play it back. But maybe you go one a sweet europe vacation and impress all the ladies at the condo...so who knows.

I know :P I'm european. The issue is that in the states you film in 30 right, and europe it's 25, making it even more stuttery here than in the U.S. This is why I was wondering about the framerate use, since I can't really use NTSC unless the video is strictly in daylight.
