Finding the right gear

I think that any skier could have a really good experience with a ton of different skis and boots, but for the amount of money it can cost, people want to put in the effort to find the absolute best option possible.

It makes a lot of sense for those newer to the sport to ask these questions. They probably do not have enough time on snow on a variety of different skis to understand how differences in width, sidecut, rocker, etc. effect how a ski performs. Be nice, provide any actual help you may have, and be glad to share your excitement about skiing with them.

Do you usually hop into new hobbies without asking any questions or seeking advice?

I think its kinda hard to get info on skis. Forget boots. But skis are hard af to get any good insight on unless you go into the forums. Every ski review is the same and and next to useless. Ski reviewers seem to be deathly afraid to say anything negative about any ski ever. They're all great and can do it all. But when you actually ride a ski there's so much subjectivity to it all.

Skiing requires so much different gear. It's a lot more helpful to hear customized advice from other skiers rather than hearing it from someone who's literally getting paid to sell you stuff.

You are right sir. The ski world is super confusing. Especially since pretty much every brand says that every ski can do anything. There was a ski shop trying to sell my buddy blends for gs, it was pretty funny but also could’ve wound up bad for my friend

Don't even get me started on the fact that every single ski review says "this ski is so playful and buttery but still stable enough to shred!"

I'm confused if this is a bashing thread on new people or a truthful question of why it's so difficult to find answers without posting a thread. Cuz buddy you did the same thing...

But I think people post threads to get an opinion cuz many can't make a decision. Many things in life we ask for family, friends, and co-workers' opinions before purchasing or doing something. Since skiing is a niche sport, this isn't possible in many circles. Therefore people come on here to get those opinions and advice. Also there's the factor that they don't know where to look such as blister guides, but even those guides and reviews can leave one feeling short of decisions.

I agree the "what should I buy" threads are a dime a dozen. Most people here have posted at least a couple. Think of it as taking in all the possible data one can before making a decision on a huge purchase (for many, a whole paycheck).

This is because 99% of ski "reviews" are paid advertisements or at best written by somebody who took a single run on the ski in one condition. This is why blister is so good.

Otherwise it's always good to gather a lot of information before dropping coin on a sizable purchase of any kind.

No bashing I’m genuinely curious. Sorry if it came off that way I do the same thing too. Like fuck there’s so much bullshit branding out there and a lot of people
end up on something that might be way too much for them or a ski that could hold them back.

The reason why it is hard is because every individual is different in their own way.


You may not realize it but the gear you use now is an extension of yourself. Every little tweak and specification is customized (or can be customized) to suit your individual needs. Through enough experience you will come to realize this.


The best skiers wield gear that has been tweaked to suit their needs down to the smallest atomic structure. One does not simply pick up any pair of skis for the first time and instantly Masters the art

You must trust your gear with your life. That is why it is difficult to find the Right gear.
