Snow from hockey arena

I have a little park going in my backyard but the problem is I don’t have any snow. I heard that hockey arenas often dump their ice shavings outside and that they work great for what I need. How often do they shave the ice and how much of it do they dump outside? Thanks

This is true, they do. The amount of times they shave the ice and the amount dumped depends on your local rink. Mine shaves it all the time and dumps it in large amounts. Just ask them permission to take the snow, I doubt they'd say no.

Usually they dump out shavings after every resurface. Talk to you local rink and ask what the schedule looks like.

Me n' my ski bum friends used to line the bed of a truck with a tarp and go to the 3 local ice arenas in the city and collect leftover snow, we'd get enough for the landing and the wood "roll-in" we to built to slide on the PVC pipe

Used to do this all the time in highschool. Tons of great memories playing snow hitting a pvc pipe.

We didn't ask we would just go every evening and scoop it into the bed of a few trucks. But it won't hurt to ask if you need that much snow. They won't care at all.

It's just wastage they dump outside to melt outside so by all means take it. Truck or trailer is ideal as snow and warm weather and cars equal bad.

Throw some salt on it as needed in warm weather to keep it from melting and slushing out. Will help keel the speed.

I guess my rink isn’t being used a whole lot, I went passed it the past couple days and there was no snow. I did just check their schedule though and they don’t have anything going on for a couple days so I will check later.

I work at a rink as a zam driver and I have to dump the shavings in a pit that gets melted and the water is re-used. Good for the rink bad for us. I just use turf on my setup...

I really recommend just finding a spot to set up near where a zamboni dumps the snow. this is tricky but my buddies and i found an arena that dumped in a field behind it and we just built our drop in out of a mound and then the driver eventually drove a couple extra feet and laid us some for a landing and jumps

It can be alright but you can get some killer summer urban in if you want. If you have a pickup, a drop in or site provided, some shovels, salt and a little time.

Easier late night as long as cops wont see you. Although we hit the rail at the police station in saratoga at least once. I remember a cop rolling into fsr end and nit parking his car. Thought he was gonna bust us but he never drove over. Mighta just been watching wondering wtf we were doing.

their schedule might vary depending on use and it can vary where they put the snow. some places have a pit they dump it in, some dump it out back

i always had good luck going and talking to them. they were always totally fine with us wanting the snow and def appreciated us asking them rather than just showing up unannounced and walking around their place

The rink I used to get my snow from had a little hill next to it so we'd just stash a PVC rail in the woods next to it and just set up on their property instead of having to move tons of snow back to my place. Spent a lot of days chillin by the arena and seshing, never had anyone get pissed or kick us out, only a few crackheads checkin what we were doing. As long as you clean up after yourselves and aren't assholes, I can't see why a rink would tell you to leave.

My local rink has tryouts tonight so I would imagine that they would resurface it beforehand. For the past few days there has been a tiny pile of snow outside so I’m pretty sure that they just dump it in their parking lot.

yeah exactly that kind of info will be helpful because maybe sometimes they'll have load after load of ice (like an hour ish between zamboni sessions) while other times it's much slower. i'd def say to chat with them about it, they'll prob be at least happy to tell you how it works there for them

when ive done it in the past, we explained what's up to them and they just said okay yeah sure ill be doing a load at 7:50, 9:00, blah blah blah

How much is a typical load? A couple shovels worth or like a car worth of snow?

Hmm it’s somewhere between those two, but I forget...if I remember correctly, I think one load will be like a trash can full...? But that will vary anyway

that’s why it’s a good idea to talk to them cause you might find that e.g. there’s a load at 5pm and another at 6 and together those two loads are enough for your skiing use, ya know?

One time the zamboni guy came out as we were filling up my friends dump trailer and he just dumped the shavings into the trailer. it almost filled the trailer up, more than enough for a small rail setup

Just call the rink and ask these questions, they’ll be able to answer everything you need to know

Send it dood! Remember to salt if it's warm/slushing on ya. Will keep the speed and hold the snow for ya. Especially if urbanning. Difference between fast snow run in and slush concrete free stone grind.
