Official SPLAT thread

SPLAT is a gap jumping contest, winner will get skibladezzz, and there will almost assuredly be some other prizes along the way!

Rules:

1. You have to jump and ride out of a gap as defined below:
If your gap does not have an obstacle you are clearing, it must have: A defined takeoff zone, a low point between the takeoff and landing, and a Lip (not a knuckle) on the landing. A disaster will be considered a gap if you are gapping at least two kinks on a rail and landing will be the spot in which you land on the rail, not the end of the rail. A park jump does not count, nor does a straight cliff.
2. One point for will be awarded for every 5 feet gapped
3. Gap size will be determined by the poster first, judge (myself) and members second if necessary (as in you're overestimating or underestimating).
4. Points may only be earned on the same gap once per season per competitor, but you may submit as many different gaps as you would like for this competition. Your total score is a cumulative total of your submissions on the year.
5. Gap is measured from takeoff to landing
6. All footage must be from this season
7. Multipliers: 1.25x multiplier for a gap over a harmful, but not deadly (to you) obstacle (a rope, or cattrack or jerry)
1.5x multiplier for a gap over a harmful and potentially deadly obstacle (road or stream or crevasse)

Competition Start Date: Dec 1st
Competition End Date: May 1st

Submissions are through the thread only, Leaderboard is based on your username

Food for thought:

Imagine this ,gapeing a gap, not just any gaper gap but the one with the biggest gapeing gap, while gapping a gap , bigger the gape and bigger the gap = additional points

I’m down to put in 20 buck of jerry of the day apparel to whoever looks the goofiest while gapping

I hadn't even considered disasters as gaps but I think that's something for the popular vote.

Maybe a multiplier for different gaps? Like x2 for a disaster or road gap, x1.5 for a cat track or rope. Any thought of bonuses for tricks? Or maybe I'm just making it too complicated haha

Score multipliers should really be based on how dangerous a case of the gap would be.

The problem with that is its subjective, so maybe we need risk categories based on the potential severity of missing the gap.
1x = low risk
1.2x = possibility of hospitalization
1.5x = possiblity of death

Im sure someone can come up with better categories than the ones ive given above tho!

SPLAT will be a contest where we post videos of ourselves jumping gaps this season. The winner will get a medium sized prize courtesy of yours truly (something worth 100-200 bucks, perhaps a nice helmet, or set of gloves. or some other ski related thing) (If anyone would like to throw in their name to sponsor, cool! If not I will buy it myself)

Rules: (tentative, to be finalized end of october)

1. You have to jump a gap
A park jump does not constitute a gap, nor does a straight cliff, however something like Corey Jackson's nipple to nipple gap would. Happy to discuss this one with you guys, but I think we'll go off common sense for this one

2. One pt for every 5 feet gapped
3. Gap size will be determined by the poster first, members second if necessary
Don't try to pull a fast one saying you gapped 30 feet on a 15 footer because everyone will call you out and as a judge I will disqualify you
4. You can only get points for the same gap once during the season.
5. Gap is measured from takeoff to where you landed
6.you have to land, or else no points for the gap


Again this is all tentative right now to be finalized end of October. Please post recommendations, and things like that. The idea behind this is to have a contest where the person who wins might not be a pro, but someone who just shoots neat and interesting gaps around their mountains.

I will keep a top 5 leaderboard based on everything that gets posted here, and likely keep it updated in this thread, perhaps once a week or more depending on volume of submissions. Good luck to all, stoked to see what gets posted here!

Thats not a bad idea, maybe add in a multiplier for disasters. However, it would be cool to keep this simple as well.

Based on what I'm seeing here, a lot of people wouldn't consider a straight disaster a gap per say. I dont want to leave you midwest boys out though, so what do you guys think of this compromise? I'll call a disaster a gap as long as you're gapping at least 2 kinks on a rail. Upvote for yes, down for no.

Takeoff to actual landing. If you can yeet your meet a few extra feet, and stomp it on the flat, you deserve the extra points.

Jskis is being super nice giving the winner a pair of ski blades and I feel the need to actually try to publicize it a little more than a thread on NSers. I say we run the contest in the thread with all the vids here and I could run an insta page on the side where I post some top vids of the week and if people could follow that it actually gives Jskis some return on their investment since they're an awesome company. I think that's a good compromise that would make everyone happy.

I like this. But go ahead and create a page on Instagram for YOU to post some of the best clips. That will give it more exposure. But include a link in the profile and in the clips to come back to here for official entry. Instagram entry not allowed. People can only submit clips to NS first.

Op says no jumps (obviously) but also no cliffs, so what else is there that isn't death defyingly massive on your home mountains? Are these gaps that prevalent and I've just been oblivious? Can I get some examples with links or photos?

My vote is nobody cares how you get your speed. Everything is good but cut that crap out of the edit. Super cringy to watch guys getting towed in by cars or other vehicles and it probably gives the actual 12 year olds some bad ideas since kids should not even be driving. Maybe you just use magic to go fast. Maybe you are a goat herder but we don't need to know about it.

It is certainly reasonable to analyze if a gap is valid on a case by case basis. I'd say an air over some kind of static obstacle (immovable, like a road, river, cat track, crevasse, etc) can be considered a gap no matter how straightforward the jump and landing are.

However, it is when there are no obstacles that a gap is harder to define, and for that I have tried to make a general guideline for what can be considered a gap if there's nothing substantial between the takeoff and landing:



Essentially, when validating a gap without obstacles, the distance between the landing and takeoff should be shorter than that of the distance between the landing and the trough of the gap. (I put the inequality the wrong way, but it says the same thing). In the example above, L and D are pretty much equal, resulting in a valid gap. If D was any larger, it would cease be a gap.

Using this method, most park jumps are eliminated from being gaps, with the exception of step ups (which should be gaps). One could still use a park jump, maybe as a transfer, but again, the distance between the landing and takeoff would to be shorter than the distance between the landing and the lowest point of the gap.

I hope this makes sense, and if anyone has a better take on it, please lmk!
