Are season passes good for the ski industry?

Just a random thought, might be way off base here, but do season passes have a positive effect on the ski industry? It kinda seems like they make it so that resorts make less money off of the die hard locals and more money off of day pass skiers, which makes them target those skiers more and not give a shit about locals.

What if they just charged like 50 cents per lift ride? They would still make money off of beginners because of rentals and lodge food, and it would give them an incentive to attract skiers who like to ski a lot.

Just a random thought and I obviously don't want to pay more money to ski, but it would be great if the whole business model revolved around repeat customers like park skiers, it might make them care about us a little more.

ok I started doing some of the math in my head and charging 50 cents per lift ride would not work

Most season pass holders do not pay off their pass except a select few. And I have thought about the cost per lift ride and it would suck but if they found the right price it could work. I do not feel like paying per lift ride when my runs take about a minute

When I was in Niseko (pre-Vail) they charged by the hour, which I thought was a very interesting/cool concept. Was pretty dope to ski a few hours of freshies in the morning, then hit the bar midday without feeling like we wasted money by ducking out early.

50cents per lift ride probably wouldn't work, but it's not stupid to explore similar lines of thought.

How exactly did that work? Did you just buy a ticket for X amount of hours at the beginning of each day?

The system I was thinking about would be like a metro card, you would just load money on to it and scan it to get on the lift and it would charge you a little each time. You could make it so certain times of day were cheaper which would be kinda cool

At my home mountain, Perfect north slopes in Indiana charges by the hour. For a skiing addict, paying off a $400 pass is light work. Normally though you would buy an 8-hour ticket.
