Hello Newschoolers. Im visiting you to post my seemingly biyearly thread asking for advice. This time on wether I should move to truckee or bend. I lived in Truckee and worked at squaw last winter and am leaning towards that just because it would be easier since it’s what I know, but also really want to explore new places. Working the lifts at squaw was the best job I’ve ever had (often got 10+ laps in with my ride breaks and had a couple days where I clocked in, helped set up the lift, and then got to ski the entire day while being paid -I’m a pro skier/claim.) Not to mention every time you ride up to the top shack is a smoke break etc, but maybe working at bachelor is similar?
Things to consider are
how good is the skiing? (Park and Pow)
how far is good mountain biking in the winter?
Mens league soccer? (I might be playing upsl soccer in the summer and college in the fall so want to stay in shape)
ski bum jobs? I’ll likely work part time as a lifty for a season pass. Who pays more?
Part time night shift opportunities? Ideally easy and mindless work like dishwashing.
Living affordability. Which has a more reasonable cost of living, Truckee or Bend?
Proximity to 100,000 plus population city. Is bend as dope as reno? Doperer?
Finally, maybe there’s another place I haven’t thought of that I should consider. Are there other places that fit my wants?
Good skiing, access to mountain biking in the winter, soccer, laid back lift ops jobs, close to a decent population center, semi affordable.
P.S. If I do move back to squaw who wants to help me get them to change their disrespectful name? Many indigenous people see it as a slur, which is even more fucked considering the resort is located on lands that the Washoe people first inhabited and saw/see as sacred. I think it would work well to rebrand at the same time as squaw and alpine are connected by tram, so most of my ideas are for both areas to be rebranded as one:
Olympic Meadows
Alpine Valley
Or separately:
alpine stays the same and squaw renamed as Olympic valley ski resort (which is already the name of the town)
