Anyone shoot MiniDV?

If your deadset on tapes get a DVX100, best camera for the format IMO. An HMC150 will do basically the same work for a few extra hundred however and it will be in HD without having to transfer tapes or risking lost footage

MiniDV is a cruel mistress, your footy will look sick as fuck but you’ll also lose every other shot. It’s really hard nowadays to find actually reliable tape cameras, add low winter temperatures and tape getting harder to find... as much as I love my VX I almost never grab it to film. You can find incredible digital cameras and camcorders from a couple years ago that were thousands when they came out that you can grab for a few hundred now, which after buying your dv camera, tapes, and a capture cam you’re probably less in the whole with the modern format. That being said please continue shooting minidv, fewer and fewer people are doing it and I’d hate to see it die out completely.

I mainly shoot with a Sony a6000 but I can’t get the batteries to last more than about 20 minutes in Minnesota cold. Is it worth it to get into MiniDV or a more expensive SD cam just for skiing, or should I stick with my mirror less and just get a bunch more batteries

I doubt most minidv cams would grant you better battery life.. at this point shooting to tape is an aesthetic choice and not a step toward convenience. I would probably buy more batteries and keep shooting on what you have unless you have the disposable income to put into a new system. The a6000 is an e-mount system so any lenses you buy for your camera can be used with a variety of super sick cameras like the Sony F series (older cameras like the fs100 go for really cheap and produce incredible footage with surprisingly good battery life) or you could invest in the a7s which has great battery life and the option of adding a larger battery pack. If I were you I’d continue with the a6000 and then upgrade to a camera that will feel familiar and be compatible with any and all lenses you shoot on currently.
Or fuck that and just buy a vx

The two cameras I mentioned above both have a great battery life, 200+ minutes on a normal day and still more then an hour when it’s really cold out in my experience

Fs100s look nice, super easy to build up or you can keep it small and compact, I also have a bunch of old prime lenses I could put on it with adapters that I have
