Would you share a rental for a weekend with virtual strangers?

More people = cheaper/better accomodation but it's not without it's issues.

Sure you might be able to rent a castle on top of a mtn for cheap with 30 people but that's risky as fuck. Especially with strangers. People are flaky as fuck at best. Also getting 10+ strangers to cooperate, pay the money, not be shit heads, have respect for other people, not be shit heads is asking a lot.

Trying to get even 3 people togetger on a lease without somebody bailing out is nearly impossible. Surea ski lease can be more relaxed, but you're adding way for people. I've watched so many people try and fail with housing and strangers.

I'm with you 100% on longterm rentals, but I was thinking more like weekend rentals. I wish I could live up by the mountain for any significant amount of time, but it's not in the cards these days. I work a regular 9-5 here in The Bay and if I'm gonna drive up to Tahoe, I like to stay at least a couple nights, try to get 2 days of skiing in if at all possible.

I've definitely done shared weekend rentals with friends-of-friends and had to do some bullshit cat herding to get everybody to cough up the cash, clean up their shit, etc., but nothing major. Still, that's friends of friends - so even though I might not know them personally, at least there's an extremely low chance of them legit fucking me over.

Shit I've got friends who would trash a place. As the abortionator said, coordinating everyone to pay up, even with the addition of convenient venmo, is super difficult. I've coordinated way too many things in school and after and it's a bitch and a half even when you know everyone. This would be even harder with randos who may or may not have a theft provoking drug habit and who have various levels of income. What might be easy to pay for one person, could be difficult for another and take longer. Then you've got the party animals who like to break shit, punch holes in walls just because, among other things. That would be my biggest concern. Carefully vet your prospective group. Definitely have multiple verified ways to contact these people so if they fuck the house up, you can at least TRY to hold them partially responsible.

As far as ripping on the mountain, I'd say most people down for this type of thing would probably shred and be reasonably sociable people. I've skied with a few randos I met on the mountains and it was a blast. I'm definitely a better skier as a result.

As far as trashing the house, rentals should have vacation home insurance that covers destruction of property. Not saying that you won't owe a bunch, but it will soften the blow. If you have a travel credit card, definitely use it to book as many offer protection for you and your guests that you book for. I always book everything for my friends and family with my card to offer them and myself protections in various forms. You could also contact the owner or airbnb and see if they have extra contracts to have everyone sign, although that might deter a renter (I would be deterred if I knew a buncha randos were staying at my imaginary vacation home).

Any lawyers or vacation rental owners on here that can comment for OP? Or maybe some of you kids can ask your daddy for advice for OP?

I would probably just start searching for rooms/ couches / floor space that already exists. Like 'borty suggested. It is shoulder season so people have probably a lot of vacancies right now. Potentially get someone to make a deal to rent you just a crash space on weekends or something.

I live in Oakland and I wanna clock as many days in Tahoe as I can this year and progress in the park. My friends are getting old and none of em really ride park anymore. I’m gonna do a lot of solo days riding the ski bus, and some big crew trips where I just ride groomers with the homies, but then it had also occurred to me to try and meet some people either on here or in the park and set up a few weekends with the rando squad at a nice shared rental...but then part of me is like, sure, who’s name is the rental gonna be under, what happens when these randos trash the place, or even like what if they rip on the mountain but they’re just boring to kick it with? The thing is, the more people you have, the sicker rental you get for your money, and by a LOT. 15 people can have a mansion if each pay the same as what one person pays for a motel 6.

Would you do it? Maybe go drinking with some MFers first and sus em out?

Definitely wouldn't do it with highschoolers! But I'm 37 and I got some friends my age who I wouldn't consider grownups. Always a bit of a dice roll. Still, I think I'm gonna try to set something up this winter, at least one or two.

I wouldn't doubt if this idea works miraculously without a hitch. Skiers are surprisingly good people.

Tru. I am always surprised at the stuff skiers will pull off with just a little bit of faith.

OP if you figure something out and have extra crash space for part of the season keep us posted. I am recovering from injury but hoping to make a trip down at some point if things work out.

The part about going up with/meeting up with other like minded people, skiing, and making new friends is awesome, definitely do it!

As others are saying, the logistical part of getting everyone to commit, not flake, and not stiff anyone financially is a bit of a bitch. Honestly, cabins/full houses can be hard to pull off for that reason and due to the fact that you usually need a fair amount of people to make it worth it.

Best route I've found is to go up with a car-full of people (so like 4 or 5) and just get a cheap (not shitty) hotel/motel. Its a lot easier to get people together, much less money to deal with, and people can typically pay for themselves on the spot.

Also, I live in San Jose; not too far from you. If you ever need more heads to get trips together or wanna get in on some riding up in Tahoe with my friends and I (some bay area, some Tahoe locals; mixture of skiers and boarders), feel free to shoot me a message!

I ran into a bunch of u salt lake students renting the presidential suite at westgate canyons to have a party. They were huge tools and were spilling beer everywhere like
assholes. None of them were there to ski. I couldnt believe the size of the ego these fuckstains had. If they were rich out of staters they mustve been too stupid to get into boulder, which is really stupid.

Probably a good idea for some sort of app. But people are selfish and gonna all want it on pow days or weekends.


If you can afford a spot and the initial deposit put up something on Craigslist or whatever to fill rooms you’ll hear from interested folks I’d guess.
