Locking Skis?

I'm getting some new chronics and the guy at the ski shop suggested locking them to the rack when not skiing since they're fairly popular. I know that skis do on rare occasions get stolen, but I think I've maybe seen a couple pairs of skis locked to a rack ever. It seems like too much of a hassle to keep the lock and deal with locking/unlocking my skis every time I go in the lodge for it to be worth it.

Thoughts?

Depends on where ya ski I guess. The hipl I work at I would never leave on the rack unlocked, people ask everyday if we've seen stolen gear. When out west though, I don't mind leaving them.

Don't be that guy bringing your skis in the lodge when they don't allow them inside. Just split them up on the rack and your most likely good. not often do people grab one ski and look around for the other to steal. I work at a mountain where stuff gets stolen pretty often because people are scum and 9/10 times its snowboard equipment.

Swap one ski with a buddy and put them in different places. Typically people stealing gear are looking to grab something quick and immediately throw it in their car/leave. If there is any sort of barrier or work needed, they'll likely leave them alone.

just buy the $14 lock and lock em up. its a recoiler so i can go in your pocket and if you hit up a different lodge at the mountain youve got your lock. A thief is going to grab the easy target and a locked ski is not it. run it through the heel on your binding (FKS work the best) and you'll be fine. I lock up my stuff everytime at every mountain i go to. why go through the hassle of spending $600 on skis just to have them stolen when you could spend an extra $14 and not deal with it.

If you ski at one resort most of the time, you can get a proprietary rack lock that also works at other mountains. They're like $15 and really small. That said, I don't own one because I either keep them in a locked building or split them if I'm actually worried about them getting stolen. Real easy to leave one ski on the rack and another somewhere else.

my home mountain had a really high theft rate, in high school I would either

A. Use the free ski check, or put my skis directly next to it so there being watched
B. Put duck tape on them so they look beat up/delamming
C. Split them up in the racks
D. Spin my fks heelpieces around so all the people dumb enough to steal shit think they're broken

Most resorts use ski-key racks. They work great.
If your using a leash type, they suck, but you can still lock them. Pass the cable through the heel piece of the break.

15 bucks will take the stress away from unsupervised equipment.

I don't know about the lock thing, I have never used one but would worry about it freezing up losing it or something. I do not recommend leaving your skis unattended. Even out west. Whoever said that makes a difference I do not know how bad theft is on where you are but it is also a big problem here.
I wouldn't be taking my skis into the cafeteria or some shit but I absolutely carry my skis into the bathroom with me or up to the ticket window or if I have to do some quick business inside for some reason. Sure they might have a sign but that's to keep people from bringing all their gear in and piling it up on the furniture. The truth is the rental shop is inside and so is the tune shop so people are bringing their skis through the door all the time. Just don't go whacking people with your skis.
Or don't take your skis off. Most days I never go into the lodge and I only unclip when I am back at my car. The lodge is usually kinda gross so I'd avoid it. The truth is staying outside in the cold is actually the best way to avoid getting a cold so it is double bonus. No one steals your gear and you avoid entering a cold and flu germ incubator.

Do you mean wawa??

I was never worried about people stealing my stuff but splitting your skis is probably the best route to go if you’re not trying to lock them

yep knew a lot of people who had there stuff fucked with when I was younger, seemed like less of an issue by the time I was in high school but I wasn't taking any chances with those 13/14 Line chronics lol

Up here in Maine its a completely different story, aside from at Sunday River I'm never careful with my shit anymore, hell I knew someone who left his ON3P's in the rack at a local mountain for weeks at a time cause he was there everyday

I’ve always set my skis outside the resteraunt window, on mountain lodges and bars same where I can see , or I take into the hotel, bathroom , if we’re shopping or sitting at a nice resteraunt skis are in the car in a garage or hotel room
however I’m thinking about a lock this year I get tired of carrying through villages
