Just a day after last payments of Ikon pass and deadline happened, Solitude announces $20 parking for solo driver cars with minor discounts for carpool.

Dick move.

With poor at best public transport in BCC and minimal ride share parking and UTA I’m sure not giving a fuck, this will suck for anyone that wants to use Solitude for their unlimited days on Ikon.

Still got Brighton and LCC for now for free parking. Looks like my days will be used there quick

Well their parking lot was full before 9am on some days, so its probably a good thing. There is not much space for them to expand the lot so discouraging people from driving up alone is a good start.

Oh I know their parking struggles. I put in maybe 4 or 5 weekends there last year. Big influx of Ikon holders with them being unlimited.

My issues is the the public transit system is not anywhere close to the point to push more people up. We need to fix that before charging. The point of charging people is to make people use the public transit. But when there are so few park and ride spots and bus times it doesn’t work.

The system is broken. And this is not a fix. Infrastructure, more park and ride, more busses, bus lanes, a train. That’s a fix and that needs to be done first.

Am am I gonna pay $20 to park and ski a few hours in the mornings. Yeah. Does it suck. Yeah.

im slightly worried about that too. I'm also worried lazy people with kids will be using Brighton parking and taking the shuttle to Soli, but i bet that wont be many.

What really gets me is the BS environment/traffic virtue signaling while blaming the customer.

probably going to see this in the oregon area sooner than later, a saturday with more than a few inches of fresh gets all the solo riding gapers up to the mountain **absolute fkn zoo**

id say its a positive change, encouraging carpooling, but im so damn jaded about the crowds at the local resorts and have been for a long time and as a person who constantly carpools to the mountain its frustrating when the mountain doesnt throw a carpool discount on parking fees, so be happy about that at a bare minimum.

Just read its $20 for 1 person, $15 for two, $10 for 3 or $5 for 4 people.

I think this is actually a solid idea, I am very guilty of driving to the mountain alone, its easy to get to the mnt when I want and leave when I want. I try to carpool when I can, which I believe is how most people think, but driving alone sometimes is much more convent for everyone. But this kind of incentive will definitely push more people like me to carpool and could really help the parking issues.

I would get having to pay Saturday Sunday but every day of the week? This is them coping out of having to invest some capital into a new system like a parking garage or a train. The park and ride bus had an hour+ wait every time I went to ride it last weekend. This is going to slam b-town. This is just frustrating I wish they would have tried something less dramatic first. They are gonna learn real hard people do not care about the environment when it comes down to it.

I do agree, but I think it should be free to park if you drive a car of 4 or more personally, not still 5 bucks, that would really reduce it. Of course I think there are plenty of people who ski who think 150 dollars is nothing

sounds like you need to make some friends to carpool with OP. minor discounts for carpooling? parking for one is $20 but with 4 people in the car it's only $1.25 per person. with reserved front row parking spaces. seems pretty fair to me. not only will this encourage people to carpool, but i'd imagine it will now be even easier to hitchhike up to soli. even if you don't pitch towards parking, drivers still can save money by picking up hitchhikers. and the bus is really not that bad.

sure they're playing up the environmental angle a bit here, but reducing congestion and ultimately improving skier visit experiences is obviously their primary goal. which is why you don't get a discount if you drive your tesla up alone. you're just pissed off about it because you're part of the problem. i'm glad they're at least trying to do something about the congestion after the shitshow pow day traffic from last winter.

So I was planning on riding the bus this year since I didn't want to spend the extra money to get snow tires and have them mounted. Surely the bus/lot wont be full at the Bingham Junction station most days right?? (I plan on skiing mostly weekdays)

I've been skiing at solitude way before the ikon pass was ever a thought, and parking is really the only issue so far since the introduction of the Ikon, and this a step in the right direction for sure. I bet eventually some type of parking pass will be implicated or even some type of forest service pass that exits for recreation areas like mill creek canyon. Week days non holiday time are still very chill at soli, parking isn't a issue mid week. keep that in mind, but paying that 20 will suck.

While I do agree that something needs to be done about the congestion in the canyon, this simply is not it.

This is an instance of a for-profit corporation creating an issue then shifting the burden of the issue onto the customer, then profiting off of it all. This isn't about environmentalism, this isn't about lessening congestion. This is no different than a mall charging for parking because they can if the demand is right. I would be more for this is it was still free to park on the weekdays, like when I get off work and wanna go up for a few laps paying $20 doesn't seem worth it. I would be for the buses if UTA could figure out how to run them on a timed schedule. I don't think its going to solve anything i.e. look at vail it's what $25 to park yet the garage is full half the time. I think this was a cop-out so they didn't have to put more capital into a real solution.

Honestly the buses are pretty solid if the canyon isn't congested already. Shouldn't be an issue for weekday skiing. I take the bus once or twice a week to Brighton during the season, it's really not that bad. Plus you can track them with the transit tracker app. I'm curious what a real solution looks like to you. Sure, I'd like to see a train going up the canyon too, but that's years out at best and the congestion won't stop in the meantime. If 20 dollars doesn't seem worth it to you then it seems to me the system will properly incentivize people to find other methods of transportation, like it or not.

However I do think it would be easy to increase frequency of buses, especially on weekends and busy periods. I.e. every 5 minutes from 8-10 or similar.

since the esw condo garage i park in now was a dirt lot
and the only season pass they sold was a debenture invest in the gar bears euro village dream or employee
and the squirell was in the A frame
mr fischers community of hippy dippy wildlife and flower sniffers needs to pay to drive and use our canyons
and figure out free public trans that doesnt suck
uta is a joke and full of corruption and overpriced piss poor management
the bus system sucks always has
so now that they took away the double uphill lane ad there is no turn lane into the moonunit lot
how are you going to collect money and keep the road to b right on moving?

You clearly missed some days this season then, I had a couple different times where I was 30 + minutes to ride the honeycomb transfer lift after they dropped the gate for honeycomb, ski out closed every time for some reason, which tbh would fix that problem, but there are certainly 4-5 times more skiers at Solitude than 5 years ago.

I feel like this will drive people to the 3 other resorts in the area, it would just suck to be a ski bum, have an ikon pass and wanna ski solitude all the time but blowing $20 on just parking to do it. Carpooling is a great idea I rarely even use, but still people like to use the bus but the lot at the base of big is not nearly big enough, and there isnt much room to expand it.

Fuck it, may as well start the construction for a tram up big cottonwood.

Wish more people had carpooling or using the busses on their mind. Sadly myself and a lot of other skiers in this state don't and don't even have the courtesy to pick up a hitchhiker going up. A temporary solution would be better, cleaner buses, more and efficient routes, more parking areas throughout the valley near the benches/cottonwood heights/millcreek/etc. Some of you have said it already but yeah, I also think a permanent fix could be some sort of train or tram headed up the canyon. Its worked flawlessly in other countries and areas so environmental impact with construction aside, whats really stopping them?

But yeah, im gonna carpool and take the bus up from now on. Stop going up solo in your sprinter vans too, vanlifebros.

on another train of thought, i don't know about you guys, but when im headed up these days its usually on weekends and there have been a solid amount of times last season when we'd get up near govy and the lots would be full and cars would be turning around (usually make the best of it and rip ski bowl)...

but you have to wonder if charging some kind of scaled rate like they are proposing and issuing limited passes would not only reduce the frequency of these situations + spending less time in the car bc of it + you encourage people to carpool and reduce our emissions even more?

i feel like any reduction of our footprint is better than none.

Definitely guilty, almost every time I went skiing this season I was driving myself, but I'm also just always on a different schedule than my homies, but maybe ill use the bus to alta, and carpool when I can. Still not even sure where the tram would go, and if they wanted it for big, little or both. Sucks to say but theres no room anywhere to expand parking lots in l the cottonwoods resorts, they've all kinda maxed their space it seems.

So I’m sitting in the MGM pool yesterday and see this sweet mono-rail blow past above. If we want those 2028 or whatever Olympics we need a system of those. Should start at airport - branch to center city. Branch up BCC and LCC. Shoot one up parleys and from Junction to PC.

Stick some parking lots in at a few stops. Only need a handful of stops to make that thing fast.

Other counties got em’. Lest invest that $10 billion that will Be needed.
