VT_scratchI mean yeah it's an internship. Great for a younger highschool student, not very great for someone with the right skillset and experience who wants to make a living do that type of work.

skiermanClose. TGR invites athletes on filming trips and months later TGR sends them invoices for all costs involved including lodging, local transport and heli drops. It wouldn't be a big deal but TGR doesn't give athletes a heads up they'll be responsible for these costs. Supposedly, they're also pretty horrendous and vicious if you have an issue paying their surprise bills.


WME takes better care of their athletes than TGR. Fuck them.

OregonDeadslavery is still common world wide. most common con to get people into indentured servitude is to promise some sort of benefit at the end. these pitches from for profit companies are not much different from some guy saying "come to America and work on my farm and then you will be set free to prosper"

eheathI dunno if something changed in the last few years, but working as an "intern" for no pay and/or school credit has been a thing for decades in many industries. When I worked at a TV station, we had anywhere from 1-4 interns helping run live shows and shoot video at events, etc and some did it for absolutely nothing.

But, getting into a TV studio and getting paid to work on a live program takes experience, same goes for many different jobs in the video industry. Nobody is gonna hire an videographer with zero experience, its quite difficult to hire someone and completely train them to shoot/edit/direct/produce any video content. I worked plenty of gigs for free over the years, those experiences were quite valuable and helped me get to where I am today.

OregonDeadI bet it is still super common but it is bogus IMO and as Andy pointed out it most of these are probably illegal in the USA. If you run a for profit business there are a legit ways to do it. You can hire someone for at least minimum wage to do actual work that your business is profiting from or you can run an actual school where people just get the experience in a lab environment where there is no for profit production.
Plumbing and electrical apprenticeship programs work like this probably because of the unions/labor movement.
The federal government has a loophole for themselves because they are non-profit but they are actually one of the worst offenders employing a huge number of interns to do the busy work. This is how most of the government staffers get their start but that doesn't make it any less sleazy

eheathWell the difference between the government hiring interns and companies in the video industry hiring interns is budget. Most, if not all companies that hire interns in the video industry simply don't have budget to hire more people.

For example, the TV station i worked for had one full time staff member for the morning live show and one full time staff member for the evening (this was me) and those staff members also shoot video/edited video/ did other work outside of the live show. So we had one staff member to run the entire technical side of the live program and then the host of the show, this is all the TV station could afford.

Larger TV stations have 5-10 people doing the same thing and that is all they do at the station. Smaller companies need interns because they can't afford more staff, this is the case for many studios/companies/etc in the video industry, its not some greedy CEO cutting 40-60k off their bottom line.
