TRVP_ANGELIsnt it kind of crazy how much money there is for [cisgender]
pro [basket weaving] compared to [agender/gendervoid] pro skiers?
BiggieSnowsThe money is in Alpine ski racing. For instance Hirscher is making around 2 million a year
GrandThingsThere are certainly more than in skiing but where are you getting that info from? Nyjah and Sheckler give people a reallllllly skewed perspective of pro-skaters.
This was certainly the norm in 00-10, but the skate industry is crazy inflated right now. Only the ones with the energy drink AND corporate shoe sponsors would be coming close to that $100K mark. Most pro's only get royalties from their board sponsors and many dont get a check at all (most of the Foundation team for example)

DeebieSkeebiesSkiing is still kinda niche though its much bigger than its been before imo. But its also that the people who make a killing off of skiing and be able to ski are also pretty good at brand promotion/marketing and selling products through things like social media and exposure.
DolanReloadedI love hirsher but thats bullshit freestyle skiers dont get even a double digit percentage of that.
DolanReloadedIm pretty sure nine pays alot of skaters pretty damn well, not just their golden boys
GrandThingsWhat?
DolanReloadedI said nine instead of nike. My bad
GrandThingsDude I think you'd honestly be surprised. Take Bobby Worrest or Donovan Piscopo for example. He's been on fire lately (sick part in Trust Fall, on Hockey - one of the most hyped teams in skating right now, and had a recent Thrasher feature) but also talks about how he's struggled to support himself off skating and had to work warehouse and odd-jobs until like a year ago.
Nyjah's contract was like 4.5 mil for 8 years or something like that and there's wide rumors that he accounts for more than half of Nike's team budget. I totally agree that guys on Nike/Adidas/Cons are in a way better place than most other skaters, but the industry is craaaazy inflated right now and the vast majority these guys arent making more than 100K a year. The guys who do shit like XGames and Street League and that shit are certainly making bread but they are very much the exception an not the norm
DolanReloadedInteresting. Id be pissed if luan oliveira wasnt getting paid as much as nyjah because luan is jesus on a skateboard and nyjah makes everything look difficult. Nyjahs hips blew out in puberty so hes not as natural as he was as a kid.
But i digress. I think some brands like toy machine who sponsor a very small team are very good to their riders. Alot of brands have huge teams that they barely pay shit though. I think to be a loved and well payed skater these days you have to be an interesting and funny person. Mike mo is a good example. He is hilarious and was really good for a while until he started partying and sort of outgrew his athleticism. I love watching his interviews though.
GrandThingsLuan is definitely up there on the pay scale so I wouldnt worry about that too much haha.
You're also very right about Toy Machine. Although its never explicitly stated most distribution companies (which are actually the real organizations behind board companies) will have an "A" and a "B" brand. Tum Yeto owns Toy Machine and Foundation, Crailtap has Girl and Chocoloate, Deluxe has Real and Krooked, Baker Boys has Baker and Deathwish.... etc etc. Typically companies will say they're evenly paid, evenly skilled etc etc, but I'd be surprised if this was true
Also you should check out what actually happened to Mike Mo, partying isnt what took him out. (Also one of my fav skaters ever)
DolanReloadedCool. So are the a brand pros usually better paid than the b brand pros?
also with respect to mike mo, he was in 16 year old shape in fully flared, but in his more recent videos he obviously has filled out and looks more thick and wider hips/stance. I assumed this was related to all the videos hes made with drinking beer and partying but who knows.
I see alot of pro skaters lose their mojo when their hips widen as they enter adulthood.
It happened bad to shecklef, it seems like he cant skate for shit anymore.
GrandThingsObviously its differs per skater, but typically I'd say yes. The Toy guys certainly all get checks whereas the Foundation guys dont for example.
In terms of skaters wearing out, you're not wrong, just part of getting old I guess. Skateboarders are in their prime from like 18-23 which is absolutely nuts. Sheckler certainly got wrapped up in that party/celebrity lifestyle. He's actually gone thru rehab now and is a pretty level-headed and cool guy. (Obviously his skating isnt what it used to be but hey, it'll happen to all of us eventually).
In regards to Mike Mo - he was actually in a horrific golf-cart accident back at Woodward in 2014. Basically snapped his entire leg/tore every ligament and fucked up the nerves in his foot so bad, he cant feel it anymore. Thats why he "dissapeared" for so long and can hardly skate now. The Nine club has a quick snippet where he recounts the entire thing.
DolanReloadedDamn thats crazy about mike mo. Very unfortunate. Thanks for the info, do you frequent skater forums? Where do u get all this inside knowledge?
