Is there an age limit to skiing and snowboarding?

Usually all my non skiing or snowboarding friends are the first to point out that I must be dysfunctional for still going skiing and snowboarding and still being stoked to do so past the age of 20..

i couldn't tell you how many people have told me “ew you still do that” like Yes Bitch I still do that.. most of them never have or have only like twice in their life.. or they only do like occasionally on Holliday’s.

I’ve always figured I’d be skiing all my life (my motivation is the free pass you get when you’re older) and snowboarding until my body won’t be able to take it anymore, what’s wrong with that ?

Nothing wrong with that! Thats what i plan on doing aswell. Probably best to just ignore those people and carry on doing whatever you like doing

My friends parents have been skiing since they were kids and they are always stoked for skiing.

Their just jealous due to their daily 9-5 with negative stoke for life. I get excited to drink coffee and do pushups every morning never mind skiing. Sounds like you need to dump those salt bags.

Even more stoke to look forward to: once you get so old, places let you ski for free!!!

Seriously though, skiing is supported by the middle age groups and their families. If teens were the only skiers, resorts wouldn't exist. The stoke only gets higher once you realize you're an adult with more money to spend......on skiing.

If the 1% didn't dump money into expensive vail vacations and full price gear the entire industry for larger resorts would fail.

People with decades of experience are having the best time. If you are only 20 you have a long way to go. About 70+ is when most peeps seem to get so rad that places will just hook up free passes.

Sounds like you need to hang around better friends OP.lol All jokes aside, I can relate, I have those non-skiing friends and they ask "WHY" and "HOW" every season. Asked why I keep going as much as I do(20-30 times a season) and how I can ski as much at my age. Im not crazy old by any means, but when it comes to the things we do on two sticks, I am old, and it takes a little while longer for me to recover from a hard day of riding or to heal from an injury. But I do love the sport, we all have the same passion for it, some more than others, it is something we all love and we do it because of that. The guy above? The same, I want to be like him if I live to be that age. I hope to be shredding with my grand kids, maybe pull a backie or a 5 off a side hit and blow their minds because this old man just did something crazy. Dont stop, wont stop skiing and I hope you wont either.

Lol I remember the first time I stood on the top of a jump line after turning 30 and thinking, "Damn, im still doing this." Then I skied the afternoon with my Dad who is 60 and ran into a ski patroller who was prob 75. So yeah, as long as you can click the sticks in you are good. It reminds me of the phrase, "You are never too old to ski, you got old because you stopped skiing..."

My one main goal in skiing is to never lose my backflips. I want to be that "dad" in the park.

^One of my favorite quotes ever. I still skate to the office on nice days, and honestly when people ask me "oh you still do that" it makes me so unbelievably happy that I'm not living their boring life.

It's like anything else. Casual hobby versus passion. There were plenty of things I did as regularly as skiing.snowboarding as a kid. A lot of them I don't do anymore. A lot of people drop skiing between high school and college.

Could be different interests, or maybe not having the time to do everything. Idk. I hope I can still ski/board forever though. I don't go out as much anymore though. The last few years I've gotten more into going a few days a week for a couple of hours in the morning after work. If it's a good day or lapping with friends I'll ride longer. I need to get out there, but not every day anymore. I remember as a kid being up there every night at the mountain even in the most shit conditions. Rain or ice, no fucks given. A lot of times they closed the mtn early because I was the only one still riding. Now I'm more fussy.

I don't fuck with crowds either. Bought a season pass to Diamond Peak for next year tough. Will prolly do morning laps at northstar right after work and then roll over to DP if it starts to get crowded.

Fuck no. Keep skiing and keep being happy. No offense, anyone who thinks its weird to be passionate about being outdoors or skiing probably isnt too stoked with life to begin with which is a shame. Im 23 and having my parents teach me at age 4 is something I cant ever thank them enough for. Its brought me the greatest times of my life and will continue to do so.

I remember being 6 or 7 skiing with one of my teachers. He was cool about taking us down some steeper terrain and teaching us some things. There was this side hit that was pretty well skied in that season. I was following him in and he threw a 360(I believe calling it a helicopter). Blew my fucking mind.

Now even after seeing plenty of triples in person and other stuff I still think that was the raddest shit I've ever seen. I think it was before winter X even so I really hadn't seen much of anything. Maybe some mogul comps or snowboard pipe stuff on tv. I just remember seeing that, and thinking, that's what I wanna do. And then getting more into jumping, eventually building stuff, and then still stoked as fuck to get out there.

Also just people watching sometimes. When somebody chucks something off a side hit, or in the park, even something mellow it always get's me stoked.

I’m 26 and rode harder last season and progressed. Stay in shape and you can ride park into your 40s easily.

I’m 37, and I’ve basically only been doing 1s, 3s and straight airs for the last 5 or 10 years, which all came from getting back into skiing when I was 27. Then this year, I decided to change it up, push myself super hard, and see how far I can progress in the park. Goal is a misty 7. I’m currently training on tramp for this season, and last week I just landed my first misty 5 on the tramp since I was like 19. Of course, I messed up my shoulder, my lower back, and one knee trying to get that misty, and I’ve been sore af for 6 days, but it felt so damn good landing it that I don’t even care. Injuries happen more easily as you get older, and everything - injury or not - hurts like a bitch, but for my money, it’s 100% worth it.

Also, how old are you? My friends talk all kinds of shit cuz they think I’m gonna kill myself, but honestly that just makes it more fun.

My grandfather turns 100 in December and still skis. He claims it’s easier than walking, and I’d have to agree. Age doesn’t determine anything, your health and love for what you’re doing does.

I'm 27 and landed my first 5 ever this past year. When I was a teenager I'd always get scared, I lacked confidence and didn't have the best work ethic. Honestly taking some time to focus on my design career, other interests and just maturing a bit was the best thing for my skiing - I feel like I'm just getting started.
Most of my office still skis in their 30s and 40s. My dad is dropping bigger airs than I've ever seen him do before at 65.
Neither the interest nor the ability have to fade.


I like that someone mentioned even if your friends don't ski / snowboard any more they should still understand passion. I have friends with other passions and we can still resonate stoke just because we can relate it to our own passions.
Also why wouldn't you still do a sport that gets you on a mountain out of the city, and is both physically active and creatively expressive? It's gotta be one of the most multifaceted types of recreation out there. Your friends gotta learn.

About 90% of my friends don't ski or snowboard, I've always tried to get them out there to have fun but they don't like it. Guess it's not for everyone that being said, I've never been ripped on for saying I love skiing. Sounds like you've just got shit friends man.

I've really never thought of a life where I wouldnt ski as much as possible really. About 99% of my friends don't ski and thats fine but personally I cant see myself ever stopping aslong as Im healthy enough to ski.

OP that's something you'll see a good amount of around age 20, and then most people will open back up and realize their life just began and they need to stay active or start dying already

there will be some who stay in that mindset and start acting like old people at age 21 but that's not the norm

i promise you that in your 20s+ everyone will start thinking sports and being outdoors are cool again

Ive seen some dads throwing down last year with their youngins.
best one was a guy in his 40s? on opening day last season hitting rails with K2 straight skis.
Im in my mid 30s and probably in the best shape of my life. I do alot of different things. I plan on staying active the rest of my life. I go crazy sitting around. I have coworkers my age that run...Running is boring and hard on the knees.
I can't do anything super awesome with my skiing yet but Progressing every year.

For some people skiing is just another dumb "sport" or "activity" that you do to waste a bit of time and money. For others it is a true love, an entire culture and way of life with several hundred years of history behind it.

46. Skied 70 days last year plus handful of touring days. Been an athlete and stayed in great shape my whole life so i'm still able to ski hard as fuck.
