I'd compare it to watching a niece or nephew grow up (I'd say like a parent watching, but thats giving myself WAY to much credit). I know where the sport came from, i saw how awkward and yet exciting its growing pains were, and now its matured into this unbelievable sport thats more complicated, amazing and popular than I ever could have imagined. So yea, sometimes its a little bittersweet to reminisce on the good ol days when the sport was just a little kid learning to walk and run, but its even more amazing to see it become the 20 something year old adult that has accomplished so much and we all are so proud of. It all love, no matter the age

I may not have been on NS that long, but I am almost as old as the hills!
I started on Head standards, leather boot and cable bindings!

I stll ski some old 1080 Space Frame foam core skis too. Have a second pair in the shed for the future. Just need to remount the heels and tune, then wham! Another 10 years of fun!

The funny thing is when you have been around long enough you realize the fads (Thug, New wave etc) come and go and the media and culture evolves but at the end of the day skiing at its core is just a group of friends hanging out and screwing around having fun with wood planks strapped to their feet.

But I'll reflect on the topic anyway similarly to a bunch of the dudes posting above me. I was deeeeep into it through high school but left the ski scene shortly after peak thug feeling sort of uninspired, like skiing was lacking creativity and I didn't relate to it as much so I turned to other interests in my life.
Started skiing more casually with snowboarders, family, and a bunch of people who weren't prototypical trendy skiers and you know what? I fell in love with skiing harder than ever and met so many people who kind of laugh at the fads from the outside while just enjoying skiing for what it is.
It's not surprising that the people who are setting the new trends are the people who don't give a shit about them. The fun of skiing to express yourself while sharing it with likeminded people will never fade.

Also I don't know what you mean about not being able to impress gapers any more - people literally cheer for anything that isn't a straight air.

I was 11 or 12 when I saw the 3 phils and MA Belliveau compete at the National Championships at the Relais in 98. My mind melted. I was obsessed about moguls from the age of 7 when Jean-Luc Brassard won the moguls World Cup in 94. When the first park was built at Le Relais in 98, I was forbidden by my parents to go, but I was talked into breaking their rules. In 2000, my parent signed me up to the acrobatic team, saying that they cant stop me from doing park, so I might as well learn how to do it right. So in a way; I got to see the birth of park skiing and follow through to this day.
I was stoked when park blew up in 2003; everyone was into the new craze, parks were packed and cliques were forming. By 2008, resorts perfected the art of the jump and standards were set. Jumps were no longer sketchy, park etiquette was established and everyone that really loved the sport stuck to it.
Not everyone can do park and I think its great that our vision of park freeskiing lead us to being recognized as real athletes and a real legit sport. All older skiers wish they had the strength of youth and strongly encourage people in the park. Dominatorjacques is a great example of my point. I loved his videos of him standing by a jump and getting stoked on film when people would hit the jumps. I remember reaching out to him on the comments that NS users were pretty stoked about his videos many years ago. I loved his point of view and how most people feel when they watch park riders in the park; no matter their skill level.
The revolution never ended Dolan. Sounds more like you are jealous that there are so many better riders than you at your hill. Park skiing even reinvented modern big mountain skiing and street skiing. Even if I moved away from park skiing to ski powder and become a mountaineer, I still love transferring park mentality with the creativity of the backcountry.

^ Thanks for the kind words. I'm still staying stoked. I love to see the new grommets working their way up to bigger and bigger tricks. Watching the new crops grow just stokes me. When the top rung folks end up leaving for whatever reason, it makes me a bit sad, but most folks can only do terrain park for so long before life catches up with them in some way.

Filming in the terrain park be it Real Laps or Jumping Fun keeps me feeling connected as I live vicariously through the youngers skills. When I was a "kid" there were no terrain parks. Skiing was not anything like it is today. Same can be said for all the "extreme" sports.

It's not over and I feel sorry for Dolan because it seems he has lost the stoke of his fire.

Ya those were great times going from super force to 1080's, they were like training skis the were so easy to ski. Now days equipment is so much more advanced and parks are well maintained and such a variety of features. It just keeps progressing and always will I assume. Ski on. Ski on.

OP hasnt been in the scene very long if he thinks this. Park is still a thing and thriving well. Just go to Carinthia at Mount Snow or Mammoth or PC or any other mountain with a legit park. I'd say skiers may top the number of snowboarders in there. While you may feel your 2 on 4 out doesnt wow anyone anymore since every 12yr old on a pair of blends can do it its still pretty awesome that its still going strong and mountains still build the features. I'd say if anything it has shifted to all mountain where people are taking those park tricks to the big mountain. cliff drops, natural hits, etc.. I think you should do some research before trying to troll. ... join date 7/2018.. please...

I know I am a new member to NS but I have been in the ski scene since the early 80's. I have seen its changes and fads a lot like some of you on here have seen and I dont see the twin tip side of it fading away. If anything it is getting bigger and bigger with riders incorporating the tricks from the park into the BC side of things which has been going on for years but they are just going bigger and bigger each year. Equipment has improved dramatically allowing riders to improve their skills and keep them safe and with todays technology, it will only keep getting better. As long as the snow keeps falling and the temps stay cold, there will always be some place to go slide down a mountain.

It's all skiing if one is skiing, be it park, BC, or groomers etc. If it's not a video game, it's real.
