Crazy how the weather works out there but I've heard tales of the lake effect up there as well, sad cause keystone is real fun on deep days

Aspect, lake effect, and over-reporting are all in breck's favor

So that Dillion reservoir is to the north east of Breck. And small. And I think freezes over. This will not enhance snowfall.

The more likely cause of snowfall differences is elevation, oragraphics and marketing.

They originally built montezuma (keystone) as a mining town because that area got the least amount of snow in the area

It's called the Dillon donut because there's blue sky over Dillon and clouds all around it. I don't know why it happens, that's just how the weather works up there. Keystone doesn't need snow because they have a good park anyway.

Interesting. I wonder if there are any negative downstream effects of this? Such as elsewhere in the country or world by intentionally sucking out hundreds of thousands of gallons of water for one location. The rockies are a seriously important part of our country's ecosystem. Seems risky

There is a common perception that Breck has snow stakes in windloaded locations, but I can’t tell you whether that’s true or not, just that it’s something I’ve heard for years.

However, Loveland and A Basin are even closer to Keystone and both average a lot more snow...almost double.

In Loveland’s case it’s located on the continental divide. Basically, it’s a ridgeline that juts up separating summit from clear creek. Loveland is on the Eastern aspect of that ridge which is also leeward relative to the prevailing winds/weather systems.

what happens is basically as air masses, often containing moisture, bump into a sudden increase in elevation (the continental divide) the air mass is forced upward, it cools rapidly and the humidity/moisture content goes up and it can lead to intense snowfall. The mountain range/ridge acts like a thumb on a garden hose sort of, by forcing the water through a smaller passage, upping the pressure. The air mass gets “squeezed” as it’s forced to pass over the mountain and it’s like the moisture is being “wrung out”.This is a dumbed down version of orographics and is a main reason why Loveland gets a lot more snow relative to keystone.
