Touring on the East Coast

I know this sounds crazy to the west coast people. But living on the east coast and having Ski The East videos as a heavy influence has made me want to do it. I've been living in New England a few years now and the Greens and Whites aren't far from me. I've done Tucks in the spring a few times but it's all hiking/boot packing/slack country. I'm wondering if there's anyone that has experience or recommendations on gear for touring on the east coast.

P.S. I know avy classes are neccessary (especially in the Whites)

There is plenty of skiing to be had in the Whites that doesnt require avy training! Skiing in the Presidential range certainly does, but to be honest, its pretty bad conditions up there until around march/april anyway. Do all the Granite Backcountry Alliance glades, then punch out to the new zones!

Came in ti suggest as well. Northeast touring is growing fast. I have a bunch of mates into it. Pretty cool seeing their pics and what they're ridden. Wanted to get a split years back when I lived there but was too poor.

I think lift tickets getting more expensive and crowded resorts are pushing the serious skiers into the backcountry. Also, social media has shed some light on something that used to be kind of "underground".

I dont think lift tickets are too much og a factor. A lot of people that tour the east have a pass somewhere as well. Bjt its just a different world. If the snow is good so many cool hikes to do. I love the northeast mtns.

But yeah, social media and widesprrad availability of touring products gas def fed it.

Great to see though.

Theres tons of touring in the east, the chic chocs has amazing skiing if you’re willing to make the long drive in canada.

But as far as the ski the east videos, almost all of those are in the side country accesses from various resorts around the east, mostly vermont, mad river, stowe, big jay etc. some of it is avalanche prone but a lot isn’t, I still wouldn’t go exploring without someone knowledgeable because in those areas its very easy to end up super far from the resort just by going over the wrong ridge.

Get the Best backcountry skiing in the north east: 50 Classic ski tours, Its a sick book with lots of maps and enough tours to last you for more than a season! That and the Granite Backcountry Alliance tours (which are on there website with maps) you should have enough to go on a tour every weekend of the winter.
For gear keep it simple get the Daymakers and skins and use the ski's you already have, sure its not the lightest set up but its the most fun plus probably the cheapest!

Anytime I mention Daymakers to somebody they look at me like I've got 2 heads and then immediately dismiss it as an option because of the weight. Have you used them on the east coast before? I'm really interested in getting a pair because it seems like the cheapest/eastiest option before going all in on a touring set up.

yes I have used them for 2 seasons on two different pairs of ski's, and since they are adjustable I was even able to lend them once to a friend who had a completely different boot size! look up how much they weigh its really not that much more. It really depends if you value going uphill or downhill more, on a super light way touring set up you probably could get to the top a few minutes faster than if you had daymakers but is that really worth a lot of extra money and skiing on a less sturdy set up?

I know the Chic-Chocs have been mentioned for the Gaspe region in Quebec.
Le Massif in Charlesvoix has huge potential. I did some backcountry in the Jacques Cartier Park back in 2010. I had 3 reactions from conservation officers: getting kicked out, blowing their minds on the possibility and inspiring a development for the sport.
I saw a lot of potential around Jay Peak, but watch out for the rednecks out there; you might be on their hunting grounds and they dont like tresspassers.

IDK man this just screams TGR dickhead let me ski the tightest tree line I can find slow as fuck and the minute I have a nice clearing for 2 decent turns I'm stopping immediately after them for a picture of my turns so I can show people out West how rad my line was.

Granted this rant is coming from someone 6 5 with 200cm pow skis so I can't really get THAT into tight ass trees or hike for them maybe if I was smaller I'd view things differently I get hit in the head a lot skiing trees out here when you have goggles and a helmet you can take a harder knock from what looks like a tiny branch than you want to be intentionally taking.

But where there is a will there is a way. Also expect anyone into this shit to be super TGR protective dickhead and not tip you off to their 'go to' spots.

Just came back from a couple weeks in Labrador then Newfoundland. There is some insane looking terrain and they do get the snow (not all years). I'm sure if a trip was planned with the forecast it would be pretty amazing.

Wow you're insanely butthurt dude, east coast pow isnt just trees, if you've ever seen a STE or meathead film youd know that the presidentials and just any BC area of the northeast high up has good open terrain, just look at the chic chocs in QC. I skied a week at jay peak and we got snowed on everyday and the tree skiing there was absolutely crazy, you probably encountered some hardo who didnt let you follow his tracks and got all upset about it, yes some areas are tight but if you know where to go and know how to ski through it youd find some fun times. Just skied the deepest winter of my life in utah and can still say that the east coast can provide awesome BC pow skiing.

Good east coast powder skiing is ducking the ropes and not giving a fuck about your bases when it drops a foot early season.

I mean my dude at Stowe whos the best boarder I've ever seen is a tiny guy and all the shit thats fair game that he can charge is just a little different for me.

The Presidentials in the winter are a different story all together snow quality is pretty sketchy from the wind and honestly its smartest to just wait until the spring. Driving to QC vs hopping a flight come on man you are just being stupid.

Its still fun its just different. The mountains aren't as wide open. But the mountains in Western N.A. aren't anywhere near as good as those in the Alps either its all a matter of perspective.

if you ski tight trees slowly then you're doing something horrible wrong bud.. The branches break if you're going fast enough.

Depends on where you are and how much snow it gets, at my shitty southern NH home mtn I've had fun days not destroying my bases in the glades getting face shots, definetly some where I shouldnt have hit trees. Presidentials are certainly hit or miss, some days it looks super fun but others looks like crusty pow. I'd say better east coast days lie in lower elevation in trees. You are right on the chic chocs but if you're close to them might as well ski em, look like super fun to have a day touring in though. Overall its hit or miss, still stand by jay being the best east coast skiing I've had for pow in the trees.

Are we going to ignore the fact that this dude claims to ski 200cm pow skis on the east coast?

First of all theres very few of those made, and second why would you ever think you need a ski that big in the east? Even the tallest people I know back in vermont stick to high 180s low 190s, theres even very few people skiing 200cm skis in Jackson, I see maybe 2 pairs on a big pow day.

For real, unless you're a racer type you dont need that length, and in tight trees you need something way small, I'm 5'6ish and my 180 106s suck to maneuver in tight shit.

I don’t know about a multi day tour or anything. But I’ve done a few day trips in New Hampshire that are cool. Stinson Mountain in Rumney and Moosilauke in warren have some good trees to ski. And look up Lincoln’s throat in Franconia notch.
