burning down churches in general was a mouvement that was popularized in norway- basically a bunch of crazy idiots, like varg vikernes and other black metalheads (not the race, i mean the genre) were trying to be more evil than the other. And since they thought worshipping the devil meant burning down churches, they did that. The history of norweigan black metal is very fascinating.
