Small business is an experience of being nickel and dimed to death by the universe.

Take your estimates revenues and cut them in half. Take your estimated costs and double them. Do the numbers still have even a semblance of working out? Even if so it’s still such an uphill battle

I have assisted with a few small business startups and for the most part they are doing somewhat well at the moment. Of course the businesses I have been involved with were ones that took some money to get up and running such as store fronts, parts buy ins and tools to make the businesses actually function. I think a small business is a great idea, with the help of social media and others to help get your name out there is huge. I always try to support smaller local companies if all possible, like the saying goes........ Id rather support a small business because the money is most likely going towards the purchase of a pair of skis or boots for their kids instead of it going to a large corporation.

Get your product figured out(supplies, patent, etc.) Im sure you are aware of the demand, do you need a store front or can you do everything on line? Will need a business license depending on city, county, state regulations and after that you will need to register it with the government(so they can get their tax money) 1099 form for self employment. There are more components to it but they will all fall in place once you get rolling. Im not the greatest advice giver but do it! If you dont, Im sure someone else will and you will regret not doing it. My 2 cents

AbiHI have a product that I am in the process of designing, but am on the fence about whether I should build a business around it, or sell out?

If I went the business route, where should I start?
Obviously the original product would have to come first, but after that...?

I think starting a company would be wayy rad, I think you should totally do it. I’m sure you would have to make a few sacrifices in one way or another, and it may take awhile to get off the ground. I mean how hard can it really be? And what do you really have to lose? Start reading books, I’m sure their are a ton of great books on starting a business.
If you decide to sell the idea, try and sell it to someone like you vs. a corporation.

Test the market first. If you bring in money easy; start the business. If you cant sell anything, drop the price or sell out. I suck at business so I cant help ya

If you go the small business route get ready to be up all night lots of times dealing with paperwork and problems cropping up that you never imagined you'd have to deal with. Are you making the product yourself or outsourcing production?
Benefits of a business:
You can get grants as a new business and for equipment.
Most expenses associated with the business can be written off.
It's nice to have agency and be your own boss

Cons:
Long hours that never end-You're constantly on the hook and have to generally be accountable for everything.
It's not always profitable, you have to be prepared to take losses.
Often curtails any travel plans or free time you might have.
