I as well respect and appreciate current military and veterans, we wouldn't be the country we are today without our armed services. I think it's important to spend money on the military as well, but we should avoid any conflict in the middle east, at least to a point, nobody wants 2003 again.

Americans have a pretty warped view. Imagine if china or some other country built a military base in the US, or even had a bunch of ships off the coast. Making a big fuss about little things, downplaying the fuck out of big things. I mean, look at all the civilians we've taken out.

I agree, we really fucked up on this one. Even the news pundits have a "Oh fuck..." look on their face. If we really wanted to stop him we could have just rolled in with some humvees and a chopper and arrested him outside the airport. It would have pissed off Iran but at least we could bring in the international community to deal with the situation. Instead we blew Iran's national hero to bits in front of the whole world and now their government is basically forced to retaliate. It might be a bunch of new IED strikes in Iraq or Afghanistan, oil facilities targeted and $8 a gallon gas or assassination of US officials. In any case whatever they do we will prob hit back and shit might get ugly.

This is more a musing of the confusion I'm experiencing from these comments. I truly don't understand people's "what if China" and military examples, how "bad the US is these days", and references to oil.

First the low hanging fruit...the US is a net exporter of oil and only tails Russia in the oil game. The US is almost 100% self sufficient energy wise as a whole, it is barely dependent on other nations for energy and pretty much all trade is economy driven. We have countless motivated engineers, mechanics, and dreamers who are pushing us even closer to 100% and working on energy efficiency/sustainability in the process. The government doesn't have to drag its feet and do this for us at the standard government pace because the American people are doing this on their own time and sometimes even find great ways to make money off of it and boost the already record economy.

If you ever think "what if China did: X", they probably already do and the only thing we've ever done about it is fight back in Space, Cyber, and tariffs. Do some serious study and talk to a cyber or space defense expert about the kind of shit they've done that hasn't even made the news. It's infuriating. Go read about the kind of things they do to their people in the year 2020, even the New York Times just ran a story on the Daily about a horrifying situation just one woman they managed to interview is going through. You'll walk away pissed off. Be grateful you don't live in that country, it is NOT the same as visiting or doing an exchange when the government decides you don't fit in.

The US military budget is huge, but so is our economy and the global economy we promise to protect with the Navy. The aftermath of WWII left the US as the only nation on planet Earth with a size-able Navy and rather than wield it as a weapon of enslavement we told every other non-hostile nation out there that if they traded with us we would protect their shipping lanes. We still do that for the vast majority of the world today, which is just one big reason why we don't play well with Iran and China who have made it clear they want to disrupt free trade.

You may be unhappy with social problems and what to see a change, but that has been the case for basically every nation on Earth to include Frodo and his band of happy little hobbits. That's a good thing, it shows we have the ability to question the norm and try to improve our relationships and lifestyles. However, I think you'll struggle tremendously convincing a room people educated on the subject....or you know old? Black? Native American? Irish?...that today is worse than even in the 50's, 60's, or 70's. Go talk to your grandparents about what life was like, go talk to your great-grandmother about the Great Depression, go talk to a black man who grew up in Mississippi in the 50's and come back and tell me it's worse now. I have NEVER talked to a person that I listed who grew up in those times and thinks it's worse now, no matter how good the music scene was.

So apparently trump asked Iraq to mediate with Iran on the U.S. behalf. Soleimani was going to meet with the Iraqi prime minister to negotiate when he got capped. So it sounds like, or at least looks like, that we baiting Soleimani with negotiation to take him out.

Where are you getting this? He was killed while meeting with al-Muhandis yet again and formally establishing militia, weapons movement from Iran to Iraq, and strategy to target Americans in Iraq. The DoD, news sources, and the Iraqi militia have all said the same thing. He also very recently did this in Syria and Lebanon, I mean he left Damascus for Baghdad right before this went down.

He is was actively targeting our military, and don't leave out the civilians. It doesn't matter if you label him a "General" or a "terrorist", you aren't immune from the consequences of blowing up other people just because you are from Iran.

The war you are afraid of has been stifled by American decision not to start it. I will remind you that this asshole was #2 in that country and he spent his free time for the last 20 years making roadside bombs work better and fabricating means to kill US and coalition soldiers in events his country wasn't even formally involved in. Do you think we would be "outraged" if we found out Joe Biden had been shot by an Iranian in Iraq at a meeting with ISIS formulating plans to smuggle weapons into Iran for use of terrorist and extremist? I'd wager we wouldn't be happy with what we found out about Mr. Biden that day if that happened, and I bet the Iranians would have no qualms with their decision.

I don't think we should be there either, but I am unfortunately not smart enough in geopolitics to formulate an exit strategy that doesn't allow the entire Middle East to implode. George Friedman has written some really awesome synopses of how he thinks these scenarios have come about and could go in the future, so maybe some of those writings will give me a better idea because he's a lot smarter on the subject than I (going back and reading The Next Decade is pretty cool now that the decade is over for example).

I don't think much will change here in the US, I've heard people talking about war and drafts and such.....all problems I think are a far cry from reality. I'm glad to have gotten a different perspective from you though, I like coming in here because so many people have a different opinion on things it forces me to really think about what I'm reading and if I can come up with a better course of action.
