Anyone know how to tell what type of metal a rail is?

i've been looking to hit this rail next season but don't want to catch if the rail is aluminum is there anyway to tell

Only way to tell is to disassemble the entire rail and bring it into a lab for further testing

Not exactly a concrete answer here but that doesn’t look like aluminum to me judging by the picture

i think the magnet idea is right?

Try a magnet, if it attracts to the handrail it is zinc/steel(most likely it is being painted). If it does not attract it is either aluminum or stainless steel. TBH, if it is aluminum or stainless the tweakers would have already stolen it to scrap it for their next fix.

Yeah thatd be chill as long as it's not knobbed or anything, aluminum rails are never painted cause its shiny and also doesnt rust, I think.

It corrodes, just not into an orangey-brown powder, and not as quickly in typical outdoor weather on earth.

OP can tap it and judge by the sound as well. Should probably get out in the world and investigate lots of materials in his or her environment. These are fairly common metals and not difficult to tell apart.

Ahh, but yes clearly a slideable rail, would like to try but assuming nowhere near me cause slc rails are often knobbed.

steel is the norm

aluminum is an issue because it's softer than the metal your skis' edges are made with, so they bite into the aluminum rail rather than sliding over it and it is not pretty!

TBH looks like steel, you can usually figure it out just touching it, but ya a magnet would resolve any doubt in your mind.

I love this answer , experience the world , what with tv video games and I pods 😂 g luck I can take these things away from my kids they will sleep for days before they go outside 🤷🏼‍♂️
