Be prepared folks.

Seriously I don't understand how people do stuff without any knowledge of the consequences, without any supplies, and without any contingencies for when things go wrong. These stories plaster the news everyday. While the focus of this initial post applies to safety goals, it really can be in regards anything else.

Some examples:

-So many people go hiking in wilderness areas improperly dressed with only a water bottle, half charged cell phone, and maybe a sandwich. Oh and usually no survival or first aid skills either. And many times alone. Blows. My. Fucking. Mind.
-People who hike/climb beyond their skill level. It terrifies me how many people set out unprepared physically, mentally, and unskilled to tackle mountains. I bet park rangers hate when ill equipped tourists go after Longs Peak every year.
-People who enter avalanche areas without beacons and other supplies and without knowledge how to use them. Not to mention without skill in many lift serviced trails.
-People who ski alone in glades (very common I know, but it's stupid). Tree wells peoplessss!
-People who get on a boat but can't swim and don't wear a life jacket.
-Swimming in rough oceans without knowledge of how to react to rip currents
-Doing anything (climbing, skiing, boating, etc) without proper protective gear.
-Not wearing a seat belt. Too many people (adults and kids alike) still get ejected from cars. Seat belt is better than no seat belt. You will more often than not die if ejected. Some are lucky.

Feel free to add to this list or share any good stories. I read three in the news today wtf! Natural selection I guess.

Really this thread is a rant about people doing things unprepared and either getting killed or resulting in major resources to save their asses. All I'm saying is be prepared because there's so many people who don't and end up royally screwed. More of a combo PSA and rant.

What at all about that offends you? Unless you fit one of the aforementioned examples...

I don't think anyone has the right to tell anyone what to do, why do you even care about what other people do? Everyone would be so much happier if they just left each other alone, if someone wants to make a bad decision that only affects them or other people who also made a bad decision, who are you to tell them they can't make that choice?

I mean some dumbass gaper dad decided to duck a rope and go out of bounds during a full on blizzard at Steamboat this past season. Dude had absolutely no backcountry experience and did not know the area at all. Man wound up several miles away in the middle of nowhere. It took ski patrol over 2 days to rescue him and they even had to call the search off around 2am the first night because conditions were so bad. Dude's bad decision affected more than just himself or "other people who also made a bad decision" because I'm positive ski patrol would much rather not be freezing their asses off in the middle of the night trying to find him.

Did you even read my post? Obviously I don't think it's okay for someone to make a decision that affects others in a bad way, like your example, but I'm just stating in general, people should stop worrying about what other people are doing.

I probably shouldn't try to argue with keyboard warriors, but well here goes...

Once again not telling people what to do, but rather ranting about it. Didn't not expect such a harsh response from folks but I guess I must have offended some people in here.

If you someone wants to go get themselves killed, that's their prerogative. As I initially said. Natural selection.

However what you're ignoring are the implications of those poorly executed decisions which is what I was getting at. These things I've mentioned never affect just the people involved, in stark contrast to your quoted text above. Millions of taxpayer dollars are spent every year on search and rescue for people who made poor decisions whilst being unprepared. Lives of rescuers are risked and lost each year in rescue services. The emotional toll on victim's friends and families is unfathomable. Millions of dollars are lost on ems response, transport to emergency rooms, and trauma activation every year; many highly preventable. Losing patients also negativity affects health care workers and first responders. I could keep going on but have better shit to do than argue with you.

I do agree with you, but........ I could care less about what others are doing but when it interferes with my life, or someone else’s due to their choice or lack of preparedness than it becomes an issue. OP is just stating a good point, if you aren’t prepared than you rely on the people who are in which costs money and risks others.

I’ve done every single thing on your list - and all of them very extensively. Except not wearing a seatbelt. I always wear a seatbelt. And I also have significant knowledge in all the disciplines so I guess I don’t count, but I want to be included.

Lol exact same, skied plenty of days without a beacon through gates (can explain), got lost on a glade and hiked up a mountain across from the ski resort, in 4th grade with my older brother and friends, swam out in the Atlantic without a flotation device (snorkeling), and other stupid shit. Since all this I've learned to be very prepared and try to have what I need if things go wrong. Tomahawked alone at Brighton out of a gate, was fine but only people around were people sledding down at the base of the bowl, got a beacon next day and only ski mellow out of gate stuff alone. I guess it helps a person's well being to think ahead sometimes.

Why is this thread so toxic towards this guy? All he's saying is that you should respect how dangerous the outdoors can potentially be and that most people don't realize that. We shit on gapers all the time for endangering themselves and others by not knowing park etiquette, this is the same issue but broader in scope.

In nz we have a tonne of Asian tourists who go out into the wops in Jeans then get found a week later it's like c'mon man.

At the same time though, I ski backcountry and glades by myself, so yeah
