Makes me angry especially as a climber, please have some fucking experience before climbing. That is all.
I'm impressed by this thread. It seems that the general public is finally starting to understand that Everest is no longer the "ultimate" in climbing/mountaineering. Real mountaineers laugh at the average Everest climber. I climb extensively and have encountered a few Everest climbers, who are always quick to let you know they have climbed Everest. The last few I met were struggling mightily to climb WI3.
Everest, by the popular routes, is now a guided hike. Pay your exorbitant price, get your hand held to the summit. It's almost all fixed ropes and ladders. There is no actual climbing. It's sad that what was once among the mightiest of peaks has been reduced to what that picture shows.
This actually is not true. The route by which almost all climbers ascend Denali, the West Buttress, is known as the handicap ramp. Seriously, that's what it's frequently called. While it is certainly possible to die on Denali, the altitude is significantly lower. Supplemental oxygen is not needed. There is no "death zone." One can get away with a lot more on Denali than on Everest.
Eeek fuck that. I hate crowded hikes. I hiked Kilamanjaro because i was passjng through Tanazania and that was a shit show. Had to climb up random shit to get by giant packs of slow shitty people.
I dont even want to hike shit thats crowded ever again. Either down to hike when the weather is sketch, or hike shit that nobody cares or knows about.
I get that everest is sweet because it's the biggest and stuff but damn. Seems like a shit show of doctors and dentists with too much money.
Chron_RabbitHow much does it cost to climb Everest with a guide?
“The typical cost when climbing the Everest with a Western agency is $45,000 and above. With a local Nepali operator it can be between $25,000 and $40,000.”

But have you climbed Everest? Or k2? There are some people who truly climb it, without their hands held. I’m not sure why you think that climbing with fixed ropes (ladders too) is so bad. It is awful because some people climb it with barely any experience, but some people really climb it. It is pushing human capabilities.

I'm not sure you read my post. I said "average" several times. There are other routes on Everest that are still (and always will be) significant challenges. There are two climbers on Everest right now, Cory Richards and Esteban Mena, who are working to establish a new route. If successful it will be the first new route in ten years.
There's no need to require Everest climbers to be experienced climbers. The inexperienced have been doing just fine, with the help of guiding companies, for quite a while. It's big money, employs the local people gainfully, and is a powerful driver of tourism. Requiring Everest aspirants to be capable climbers will do little to decrease death tolls or increase safety.
Speaking of Everest...
How the fuck do you consider yourself a decent human being that wants to tackle a natural wonder, yet leave all your trash behind...
These pay 45k to be almost carried up a mountain. They aren't considerate people

Much less high, technical, touristy but kill had tons of trash stupid people and generally smelled like piss. Luckily wasn't in a group or I'd prolly have dove off a cliff. Only mtns i ever want to go up that have traffic are aconcagua and maybe denali. I fucking hate traffic. When I hike I generally look for the longest trails or shitty times to see the least people. People hike slow as shit, talk loud as fuck, and won't move over for anything if they're even aware.
To everyone talking about trash:
Some things are hard to bring down the mountain, such as dozens upon dozens of O tanks left on the south col. It is very hard to also get a large amount of trash through the Khumbu Icefall unless you bring only a few pieces with you.
The Hillary Step fell off like 2 years ago, probably not a good thing as those who've climbed it say that's the hardest part (unless you are a Sherpa I guess and actually have to lay ladders and navigate the Kumbu Ice Fall at the beginning of the season). Also, I don't think I've ever read an account of Everest that suggested it was even close to the same difficulty as K2.
From: a guy who hasn't climbed either and likely never will.

SendyMcSendyfacerumor has it that vail is planning to buy it...
Not a rumor. 100% true. They plan to build an elevator system that is a pressurized 20 person capsule with 360 degree views and run 24/7. It will ascend you to the top of Everest in 2 hours, where it will then stop for 15 min for photos, selfies, and pov videos. Descent will be an accelerated descent to provide passengers the experience of zero gravity for 5 full minutes before the capsule begins to slow down again. Complimentary WiFi is available at 1Gbps speeds so you can stream live on the platform of your choice as well as watch Netflix in 4K during the long and strenuous ascent. It comes complete with enough charging outlets and cables to provide each person the ability to charge 4 devices. The rumored cost per ticket is $20k, or about the cost of your average family vacation week at a Vail resort. Obese individuals must purchase two tickets.
This is a very well thought out post. I laughed very hard
