Woodsy isn't a good ref

Just putting it out there, Woodsy has made some seriously bad calls in the slvsh games recently. Personally, I can't stand his commentary but that is besides the point. There are some extremely loose calls, like calling Colby's 9 crossed tail good to go is absolutely absurd. On what planet is that a crossed tail? Just because he crossed his skis after he let go of the grab doesn't mean it's good to go. That's like someone calling cork 9 crossed mute, they do uncrossed mute and well after they've let go of the ski they cross their skis a little bit. I know he has an issue feeling like a dick during these games but you've gotta be kidding me. This is just one example too, he's made a lot more absolutely horrible calls. We all love a nice and long slvsh game and I get some of these calls can be super tough to make, but there's been a lot of calls where I'm pausing the video and thinking to myself what the fuck.

I bet the riders dont even think into this much. Just enjoy the dope content that they put out and dont get so worked up over it.. its just skiing after all.

We're all looking for quality slvsh games right? He isn't helping. A shitty call isn't gonna change the momentum of the game completely and it's straight up unfair to people who are lacing tricks only to have someone zeech the fuck out of theirs and still have it pass. Same goes for any professional sport, a ref makes a shitty call and people are gonna be pissed.

I definitely enjoy the crap out of these games, I just can't stand woodsy anymore. Maybe it's a personal problem I dunno but I know for sure the homies are getting pretty tired of his calls.

There are some wack calls, but you have to keep on mind that the video review is a tiny screen in the sunlight. His reffing angle of things might also make some things seem off.

That's definitely true but every other ref makes great calls. A lot of his bad calls are dead obvious. Just look at the cork 9 cross tail replay, it doesn't get more obvious than that and his explanation is that he crossed his skis at the end of the trick when no grab was initiated.

Untrue hes a good ref and he explains his calls, and he brings alotta excitement. Imma stop now cuz this is a battle not woth fighting.

Are you bothered by someone discussing skiing on an online ski forum? This forum is literally designed for this exact purpose - talking about just skiing.

And I agree with op. I don't mind his commentary but I think he needs to pony up and make some more assertive calls. He's too lenient.

I thought woodsy was cool, just needs to chill a bit. The cross call was loose but, whatever, other then that call I thought all his calls were fair. Only thing that bothered me about the final was it was 60% woodsy talking. Guys chatty I guess.

Slvsh games wouldn’t be what they are without loose calls, the slvsh games that are called strictly are like 8 mins which isn’t what anyone wants. Plus it’s not the fucking x games anyways, it’s a game of slvsh... The games are meant to be fun and not called super tight.

To put this into perspective it’s like playing a game of SKATE and you set a kickflip and the other guy lands on the side of his board and shuffles to the ground. You would call that sketch but good.

And bro the call before that the 180 to 50-50 to 180 out was a really difficult call and both of the calls cancel out with each other. And if your reffing a bunch of games your going to make a bad call here and there it’s just a matter of who’s going to complain and whine about the call and who isn’t.


The call affected no one the game was 5-1

He called the loose tail grab because he was loose on finns sw 50-50. He keeps it even which is the best kind of way to do it, if one player gets a loose call, the other player gets a loose call. If one player is called real tightly then the other player will be aswell. Only time he does extra talking is when he explains what hes doing.

The only thing I dislike about some reffing decisions are when they let a loose trick go without a letter, due to another previous call they made in the game Eg: in this game Woodsy drawing a parallel between the previous sw 50-50 and Colby's uncrossed tail. Both being loose (likely shouldn't be "good") but still letting the play go without a letter being given.

I get the idea of letting a game play on, and calling loose relating to multiple factors (keeping a chill vibe, viewing angle inconsistency, camera review somewhat unreliable), but I just don't think that previous decisions should have anything to do with future calls. If they were addressed properly at the onset, it wouldn't come down to these loose decisions.

That being said, Woodsy is a solid ref and not the only one guilty of questionable calls. It's easy to criticize when you're watching from the comfort of your home and able to review a clip 50 times on your laptop or phone, while these guys are live viewing some dudes hauling ass 50mph into a jump.

It's easy to ref a game from home. It must be way different when you're there in person actually making the calls. Some decisions seem to have a bigger impact on the outcome of the game but that's just the way it is. It's impossible to know how a single call is going to affect the rest of the game until after the game is done.

You can tell Woodsy puts effort into being as fair as possible. He's bound to have a few blown calls but reffing is just part of the game and it will never be perfect. I much prefer watching the ref justify his decision than watching a skier at the bottom of the run waiting for the judges (who we never actually see) to give him a score.

I actually really like the way Woodsy refs. I know Colby's 9 wasn't crossed but Finns 180 on was pretty off too. Not as much as Colby's 9 but still he just tries to make the games even. I think it would have been a little bit unfair to call Finns trick good without calling Colby's good and I imagine if Finn laced up his 1 on he definitely wouldn't have called Colby's good. Also idk why everyone gets bitchy about loose calls I think its way more enjoyable to watch. I watch slvsh to see people lace up crazy tricks who the fuck cares about who wins. People also seem to forget how hard it is to be consistent doing pro level insane tricks every feature. Like if someone fucks a b2 off a little that should be called no good but on a dtp cork 9 on a side hit you gotta give him a little break. Woodsy if your reading this keep doing your thing man your my fav ref by far bro.

Woodsy takes it more seriously and puts more thought into each call than any other ref. As previously stated in this thread, the screen he's watching on is literally less than 1 inch in width and in direct sunlight as well lol. Overall, every ref will make calls that you may or may not agree with, but you can't knock Woodsy because of the passion and effort he puts into reffing. Also explaining each decision adds a dynamic to the game that can help draw in curious or less informed viewers which is overall great for the growth of the content and SLVSH as a whole.

Used to think woodsy was the best ref, he’s a really nice guy and super talented skier. Unfortunately he seems to have embraced a youtuber style persona that tries so hard to be larger than life and just so loud. I just wish he wouldn’t be constantly talking, it detracts from the games and kinda ruins it for me. It’s a shame and I hope he can tone it down in the future and not shout all the time.

From personal experience, Its a totally different ballgame when youre the one actually reffing. whether its baseball, football, skiing, whatever.

every ref has blown calls and are normally doing their best.

Cant you connect a gopro to phones and watch what was just recorded? Why arent they reviewing on phones for difficult calls?? Or even like a designated slvsh tablet? . . Lets get a god damn mobile NFL Booth Review station up there. . . . Maybe a bit far but the point is why arent there other viewing options for refs?

the switch 9 stale that won colby in his game with vinny was maybe the worst call ive ever seen, he also can talk way to long even if its about other shit than the trick, otherwise hes usually the best except this cup.

In my Honest opinion , Woodsy is a really good ref ( on a side note also entertaining) and explains his judging process on debatable things.

The only down thing is , well you really cant call it down thing (because i honor his moral thinking), but lets say possibly a factor that impacts woodsys reffing that is taken negative by this community is:

i think due the overall hype his reffing is getting and the seriousness of games, he kind of creates an obligated need to overthink and pull anything what is possible out of shady trick makes in order to satisfy everyone else but his own honest decision whether he is aware of that or not. You can clearly see how sometimes he is just stressing himself to make the best call.

At least i kind of get that flavor that he is forcing himself to look at certain stuff to intense you know.

Regardless, i do respect most of his choices as i mentioned above , he doesn't just say yay or nay, he also makes us follow his thinking process why he would just also make it possibly pass

Love his energy, don't mind the explanations. Thought he missed some this SLVSH Cup. Also don't like the "i gave X to so and so earlier in the game so this counts now." I prefer looser games cause this shits hard, but gotta decide in the beginning if you're gonna require people to lace tricks or give some leeway and stick to it.

He's a lot better than some of the other refs though.
