Vail eliminating free parking at PCMR

SkiBum.In about year 2 of the PCMR/Vail lawsuit Ian Comming (owner of Powdr) said that he would just keep his 250 acres of owned land at the base and sell off all assets on the disputed land (lifts, snowmaking assets).

The lawsuit was over about 250 acres of land at the base. Vail already had leasing right for the upper roughly 2500 acres. But had no access to it. So the lawsuit was over the base area which Powdr/comming owned. No one wanted to budge. Hardball was played and that resulted in the “fuck it I’m taking down all my shit and going home”. Have fun with that land and no access and no assets. Town did not like that. People were pissed. It was a hard bluff, but more serious then people realized.

About 6 months later the buyout was finalized and for a minor $175m give or take Vail had their base and all assets stayed and the ski area is what it is today.

I agree. But everyone thinks they are entitled to drive their car alone and park in the front every day they ski. The public transit does not get used to the level it should. I’m an offender hands down.

The transit and bus schedules are great. You can park in 5+ outside lots and get the bus free in. I think if parking gets to $20 a day we will see many more locals actually use the bus system. The only downfall are the busses will sit in the same traffic as others. No designated bus lanes.

Less traffic if everyone parks in kimball and busses in though, that's the true solution/reality here. There is already a express shuttle from kimball to PC and they use all electric busses for that route, its like every 10 minutes, ez clap. I take the bus to the hill pretty often, admittedly I prefer to drive when I have my filming equipment, but I take the bus every day I just ski at PC.

TnskiI'm not from around there but covered or parking garages would have its benefits. They wouldn't need to plow so you could poach a few nights car camping.
But a resort by were i live was bought by Vail and noticed they dont offer a cheap midweek pass anymore. Imagine the ski bums will be getting the squeeze next.

Honestly I'd rather drink on the lift, goldminer's for $2 tall boy tuesdays, and P-Dog, hopefully a friend is playing that night. Also just under the canyons rests Hog Wallow pub which is a great place to grab a drink, plenty big, and the patrons aren't good at pool so odds are you're running the table that night as well, not to mention the ladies there love dancing and it's never a sausage fest pretty even female to male ratio.

I lived in Tahoe for half a decade, taking a winter off late in college then going back for a few years. I skied Squaw and NEVER used the shuttle system there. That sucks that it does not work, but it does not surprise me. Like you said, Mammoth is pretty much a grid, with Tahoe things are more spread out. They really need to address the situation. Traffic could be horrible during the holidays going from Tahoe City to Squaw, and I don't imagine things have gotten much better.

There are some other resorts that make things work, but it would be tough in Tahoe.

I have been guilty in the past. The only reason I have really changed is that parking is tough at Mammoth, there is no large lot, and the shuttle is very convenient.

In general, people don't do what they should unless they are forced. There are exceptions, but people like convenience. Cars have gotten MUCH more fuel efficient since gas prices exploded around 2005. If prices went back down to 1.30 a gallon lots of the people who are looking for fuel efficient cars would stop caring. That is not true for everyone, but not everyone who drives a fuel efficient car cares about reducing oil consumption.

I would expect that if things do go the way of pay parking, there will be an effort to improve the shuttle situation, not just for Park City but for getting from SLC to PC. Like I said before with Mammoth, they have always had a parking problem because the vast majority of their skiers drive in from socal every weekend as opposed to flying. This creates a huge number of people driving to the mountain every day, a mountain with no large lot. That means people have to parallel park way down the road from main lodge, on the streets in the area near Canyon, and down the street from Eagle. This is a major nuisance, as you have to take a parking shuttle to the lodge, if you can even find a spot. It is much better for the resort to just have a good bus system rather than to have to deal with the parking issue. I have not been to Vail in many years, I went a couple of times with my family when I was in high school, but Vail had a great bus system, you could fly in for a week and there was no need to rent a car. I really like not having to worry about driving when I ski, but if Mammoth's parking situation was not such a hassle I might never have gotten into the habit of using the bus.

Hopefully Park City can figure this situation out.

You can’t just blame Vail. A lot of mountains are overcrowded and parking is a nightmare so they’re starting to charge to encourage carpooling. I’ve had better luck on the Canyons side (although I assume no longer free now) but parking on the PC side has been a major issue on many days.
parking still free in Cottonwood canyon? Last time I went to Brighton it was a shitshow too.
Hope they put the $$ to use like structures, and they have to offer some sort of free parking solution/shuttle
