Fuck Vail. They should build a parking garage that you have to pay for but leave the regular parking free. It's insane to think you will now have to pay for PC's already abysmal parking situation

Well the parking will improve over what is there, when finished. I’m assuming this will be a 2+ year project. And probably a cluster when in progress. I haven’t read over plans as I just don’t care anymore.

When the old plans from Powdr were revealed they had 1,500 parking spots I think in a multi story parking structure on the footprint of the upper parking lot. I think that’s more then current total spots. I’d assume Vail has that many or more planned.

It’s really not that much different then what the plan has been in those areas. It’s just that Vail is doing it and avail sucks.

why are people downvoting this? I definitely agree. Most big ski resorts, especially those owned by vail, are catering to a richer and richer demographic to increase profits. They don't want local park kids who never buy anything at the lodge and never rent a condo at their mountain, they want tourists who will come for 5 days, spend a shitload of money, and then leave.

I was just in the alps and they have a lot of underground parking garages, seems like the best option to me since they're out of sight. Not sure what pc is planning but not all parking garages are wack IMO

That is the plan. Other ski areas have it. There’s no ice or snow in there. It’s stories and confined from weather. It’s all pretty hard to find a ski resort with no steps these days to access snow.

More park and ride lots, especially ones like out at Ecker Hill need to be built. Better bus routes because the bus system in PC was a massive hit this year, something like 60k passengers alone in the month of march. Thats huge for a small town like that.

Its shitty, but complaining doesnt do a whole lot. People forget this isnt a city owned by Vail Resorts, They have an actual local government that really doesnt do shit, doesnt' get pressed enough by the locals, and its time for people in the area to start raising a bit more hell and have their government start representing them for once.

And yeah like a few of you have said, theres a reason places charge for services like that. You're not their ideal customer if you cant afford it so just go ski somewhere else. Utahns who still rail PC for being shitty have no room for excuses when you have the entire Wasatch to play with.

I used to work for vail and I can tell you they're just being dicks. It's one thing trying to maximize profits but it's another cutting out the locals who have been supporting the mountain for years. Not even just the locals but people who visit PC yearly are scratching their heads and thinking 'what the fuck happened to this place'. You should see the quickbooks, they're pricing things so outrageously that they end up losing money in certain areas. An example would be the town lift in the summer. You used to be able to get a ticket to go up it once for like $15 or something like that. They changed it to a day pass to use the lift for like $60 or something outrageous. Nobody wants to ride that thing more than once, let alone for $60 especially if you have a big group/family. They lost about $150,000 in one summer just by the sheer amount of people who turned away when they saw the price. Just look at the amount of people going to Little & Big cottonwood over previous years. Solitude used to be empty and now it's a shit show every weekend, people are seeing the alternative.

There was planning for major development and parking garages years before Vail bought it out.

I've been off this site for a little while now, no surprise that skierman is still an annoying LITTLE BITCH! Anyhow I used to care about this type of stuff, now I just don't give a shit. I'm glad to see vail fuck with privileged 'local' skiers. It's like watching two snakes trying to swallow one another by each other's tail. They form a gaint hoop and start rolling down the hill, swallowing, until they disappear entirely. You want a ski resort experience like it used to be? Stop giving vail your money, go ski beaver or Powder Mountain. Park City is about the money.

And it's no wonder why they had to close by (what??) April 7th with more snow on the way?? I went with IKON pass this year over EPIC. To be honest, I love Solitude, alta/snowbird over Park City. No offense or anything, but Park City is no Vail and for me to come out to Utah from the Bay area, I'd rather go to a real skiers resort then listen to people like Pinkcamo who like to ride the blues and complain about the locals complaining.

UGH!! My bad and I apologize. I misread what you and pink were saying. Yes, I agree. I just hope these places don't all get bought up by Vail. Here in Tahoe, we still have some cool little spots like Diamond Peak and Mt. Rose, which I love both, but even their prices have gone up a bit. Park City being $209, which is an OK mountain is unacceptable and the only reason why I went there the last two years was because I went EPIC Tahoe Local and thats the closest drive for my 5 days. For the drive, no more of that crap.

I would love to see a mass exodus of park skiers from corporate mega resorts to small local hills. Tbh small places are way more likely to value us as customers and members of the community

Still on track for November. Snowmaking has been going in during winter when weather worked out. The lodge/facility has had progress all winter which was something to see considering the weather. Lift line is cleared and looks like roads to footer locations are in and being dug. So the progress is there. Lots of work left though so hopefully they make the November timeline.

It's really just on those smaller places to maximize the park for their hill/budget. You can do a lot without a huge crew if managed right though. And just dial in 2 killer parks instead of trying to spread it between a bunch more.

There are def some killer parks at smaller mtns, but a lot of places are still pretty clueless on how to build.

Well hopefully the whistler residents and government stand up better then the PC ones. We all hate Vail. But we just roll over and deal with it. It’s better then Cumming who was gonna just close the place.

But hey. My real estate values are sky high. So thanks Vail there.

I'm not from around there but covered or parking garages would have its benefits. They wouldn't need to plow so you could poach a few nights car camping.
But a resort by were i live was bought by Vail and noticed they dont offer a cheap midweek pass anymore. Imagine the ski bums will be getting the squeeze next.

It is a shame to see this, but not all that surprising.

Does Park City have lots of parking? I have not been there in many years.

Park City is a big destination resort. I don't think it is anything special, if I am going to travel to Utah I would hit Snowbird/Alta/Solitude.

Does Park City have a good bus system? It would seem to me that they should. Is there good bus transport from SLC to Park City? Honestly I would not bother skiing Park City if I lived in SLC, the other mountains are much better.

I spend 2-3 weekends a month at Mammoth. There is a good shuttle system in town which picks up right next to our ski lease, so I almost never drive to the hill. Mammoth has very small lots, so most parking is done along the road, which means walking to the hill or taking the parking shuttle. If Mammoth went to pay parking that would be a nuisance, but because I usually take the shuttle it would not make that much of a difference to me.

Seriously though, I don't know why anyone would choose to ski Park City if you live in SLC. If you live in Park City I get it. For college students in SLC who have the Epic passes I would look into shuttles or carpool.

This does suck, but I would point out that season passes have gotten cheaper and cheaper. When I lived in Tahoe, I left in 2004, a Squaw full pass was 1600. For people who ski a lot skiing has, for the most part, gotten much cheaper. If you live in SLC and have the Epic you can ski Park City, but you can also travel and ski Kirkwood, Whistler, LOTS of other places if you have the budget. I spend about 3000 a year on our ski lease in Mammoth, so I don't have much of a travel budget, but it is nice that with the Ikon pass I have my tickets paid for wherever I am likely to go.

So yes, this does suck. For someone in SLC without much money, someone who won't be able to travel and enjoy the benefits of the Epic, this REALLY sucks. But overall skiing has actually gotten more cost effective for the majority of serious skiers. There are certainly exceptions to that.

Reading the article, it seems like there are lots of potential outcomes here. But it does sound like they are going to be building a hotel, and possibly some retail stuff, on the property. That means that regardless of whether or not there is pay parking, there will be less free parking. Destination resorts don't really want to have free parking because it does very little for them. Since a huge percentage of their visitors are flying in and taking a bus to the slopes from their condo, or they are walking to the slopes. Free parking does not really matter to that crowd. The bottom line is that for resorts that get a large percentage of destination travelers a free parking lot is not of much use, it makes more sense to have a shuttle system and use that space for something that will make them money.

Regardless, the amount of parking is going to decrease. I'm sorry to anyone affected by this.

In about year 2 of the PCMR/Vail lawsuit Ian Comming (owner of Powdr) said that he would just keep his 250 acres of owned land at the base and sell off all assets on the disputed land (lifts, snowmaking assets).

The lawsuit was over about 250 acres of land at the base. Vail already had leasing right for the upper roughly 2500 acres. But had no access to it. So the lawsuit was over the base area which Powdr/comming owned. No one wanted to budge. Hardball was played and that resulted in the “fuck it I’m taking down all my shit and going home”. Have fun with that land and no access and no assets. Town did not like that. People were pissed. It was a hard bluff, but more serious then people realized.

About 6 months later the buyout was finalized and for a minor $175m give or take Vail had their base and all assets stayed and the ski area is what it is today.
