ON3P: 4 - an honest movie review

I think Oliver is the best fit for On3p. His filming style fits their vibe a lot more than gustav’s and the bunch style.

Quick opinion on the bunch-esque edits
I’m really sick of their over edited videos, it was cool in 2015, now just move on with it, we get it..you’re “~creative~”.

I love how they don’t give away a bunch of tricks and save the hammers for the videos. That’s the way it should be. I hope Ollie films for On3p for a long time.

this is truth
3 and 1 both have a really definitive and unique vibe that I didn't find so much in 4 and 2, and also in the bunch's color
I hope 5 is gonna be better than 3 or 1

Really fucking good, some baffling tricks in there. Pretty short, but no complaints.

I think it's really cool that ON3P is bringing in a variety of directors for these projects, I think it ensures that their videos won't get stale cause each has its own flavour. Some people are definitely going to like some directors more than others, but I think when it comes to ski videos variety is often the best move.

I definitely agree that some Bunch and Bunch-directed movies are a little over edited, but I thought color was pretty straight up and didn't suffer from too much editing

Siver's swaps over the Skate Stops made me pee myself

I thought they did a bunch of backcountry skiing for this?

It was super creative and the features were excellent imo. Could have been longer and could have been a tad more diverse but all in all very impressive.

Was really hoping for a "team movie" type thing but it was still cool urban. Would be sweet to get some variety with backcountry and even some nice smooth park stuff from the whole crew. Haven't seen any sick fully-edited backcountry stuff from ON3P in a while, probably since Karl in "Stray Dogs". Lots of insta clips from Jonnie but that's like a couple seconds of content every once in a while while I'm wasting time on my phone.
Would be so sick to see some of the different styles of ON3P athletes come together for a shoot, build a kicker or session some mini golf or something.

But anyways that's just a wish list because this one got me pumped and I wanna see more.

They were filming backcountry up in Fernie and Revelstoke likely for ON3P 5. Should be a really great mix of styles with guys like Mango and Magnus in the backcountry with Jake Doan and Jonnie Merrill

Yeah that sounds sick for sure and honestly more what I'm into anyways! Lookin forward to it. Would have been sweet to combine that content with this footage though. Barely got a beer poured and sat down before it's over.
I know people's attention spans are super short these days and it probably makes business sense to release shorter segments more often, but I just like an excuse to really immerse in something.

A lot of spots 3 or 4 people would get tricks and only the most banger clip was used. I think it made for a quicker more banger video. Something you can watch before skiing and get hyped 🤪

If you want it longer I have a great solution. Watch it twice or three times. I bet different things will stand out to you and it’ll be a new experience leaving you with an even greater appreciate for what they were able to accomplish in just 4 weeks of skiing street.

Just some thoughts on it. Glad most everyone enjoyed it. The whole crew did a great job, in a short amount of time, and given how little filler the movie has + that it is urban, we felt the length was great.

As for going forward - these specific projects are going to become the norm. 1 and 2 were great - but we're a lot more interested now in trying to tell stories and do things that either tangibly connect you to the trip themselves - see 3 and 4 - or push into questions about where skiing is at and where it is going (a bit in 2 & definitely 5). With 2, people might have not noticed it, but one of the aspects discussed was that there isn't anyone in the entire moving that hits a jump in a traditional fashion. That might seem trivial, but that was an aspect that intrigued us and influences our mindset on the movies going forward.

There is tons of pure ski porn out there, and team movies that are just everyone skiing - but I personally think it is appealing to connect on certain trips and with certain people, and one-off trips are the way to do that. There will be movies, thus, that people don't connect with - and that is fine. But the goal of team movies like 3 or 4 are to convey what the trip was actually like - outside of just the skiing - and place you there mentally. This is in combination with good skiing, of course.

With 5 - outside of the trip aspect of it - one of my main goals on the trip was to answer the question - "what if you put Magnus/Mango on the same Revy peak as Jonnie Merrill?" The goal was to have a dichotomy of styles in terrain that didn't traditionally suit it. The tension between those styles was one of the main points I wanted to hit on, outside of getting to watch 4 weeks of an amazing crew skiing powder in BC. I support all styles being in skiing - so wanted to show that not everything has to be about your style vs "their" style.

Re balance of the team - it's something we're aware of and we're looking to do more on the Woodsman/Wren/BG side of the party, but fit and opportunity has to be right and we have a strong crew right now we are dedicated to support and grow with. So just something that will take time - that said, we're certainly excited to see Jonnie take a bigger roll in 5 and where he takes his skiing in the 19/20 season. Doan, too, has really taken a step forward in his powder skiing this year.

One last thing on the trip-specific movies that doesn't affect anyone here, but is nice for the team, is that it takes the season long pressure off regarding a team movie, thus allowing our athletes to focus on projects they want as well. 4ish weeks in the US and Canada and Magnus is set for the year on ON3P movie content. Lots of freedom to do projects he chooses the other 48 weeks of the year.

Anyway - just some thoughts and a top down view of why we've moved these projects in the direction we have - and how we're trying to spin the content in a way that we find interesting. Thanks again to everyone who has supported us and allowed us to develop these projects the last couple years.

Love it. So much respect for always showing so much transparency with the reasons why you guys are doing what you're doing, and taking time to share even though people would totally buy your skis either way. It all makes a ton of sense to me! Stoked to hear you're making decisions with the athletes schedules in mind too. I can imagine not every company does this.

Also I'm really excited for ON3P 5 at this point. Literally sounds like a dream come true.
