Kinda want to do something in life that I won’t be broke from and I can live comfortably (maybe with a family). I really like engineering, my brain has been wired for it ever since I was a little kid. That’s what I plan on going to college for (hopefully out west for college, preferably U of U.) my fear is that I will just get my degree and ditch the idea of having a big job like that and become somewhat of a ski bum, and have a shit ton of debt and no way to pay it off, or that I will just find an engineering job but I’ll find myself not being able to ski much anymore, which will kill me. Also, if I choose some form of engineering as my major in college, I honestly don’t even know if I’ll be able to ski much since it’s a rather tedious major from what I’ve heard. Also, any tips on claiming in state residency fast? Some1 help a spontaneous, ambitious, and sometimes unrealistic highschool kid out.

Hello there, I am a Junior Computer Science major at the U of U and honestly life can be kind of hell. Every single thing you just discussed are thoughts that have traveled through my brain the past three/four years and I'll tell you everything I have learned relating to this concept. One, if you actually want to ski in the winter, you will not be able to take the same amount of classes as non-engineering majors and expect to ski the same amount as them, like it just ain't gonna happen (I promise, like I know you're smart). Either accept that it is going to take more than four years to graduate or take summer classes, but do not take a normal class load in the winter and expect that you'll be skiing as much as your non-engineering friends (if someone told me this three years ago my life woulda been ten times better). Me and a bunch of my other engineering friends have failed classes in the second semester just because we wanna ski so bad. Save the money and just don't take classes during ski season (get a job if you have free time it needs less brain energy then college homework). Also, about your fear of ditching the idea of having a big job and being a ski bum, that 100% happened to me so your fear is definitely a reality. I came into the U of U in the Honors College passing a bunch of AP Tests with a shit ton of big ambitions, but when you're in SLC it's so hard to focus on life when there is so much dank shit you can do. Basically, if I were to offer words of wisdom because I am a few years in the future on pretty much the same sort of question, I would say you really need to engrain into your brain how much of a priority skiing is to you. Like if you really don't give a shit about your schooling (like me) and only do it because you would like to live comfortably one day, then take your sweet ass time with school and always make sure skiing is on your priorities. The older you get the harder it is.

follow your heart and never look back and you’ll never have a single regret. i’m studying neuroscience and still ski 4 days a week because that’s what makes me happy. i’ve certainly had to make sacrifices in other parts of my life to allow time for essentially two things: science and skiing but those are the two things that make me happiest. as you move through life you’ll find that when you only do what you love, you’ll always love what you do :)

Some good advice here already on this thread. My advice to you....... go to SLC, get into school, for the first year figure out the area, SLC has a lot of cool shit super close(I grew up pretty close to the area) to do, you might find something else cool to do for work and support yourself and a family. Keep your options open for a little while, plans can change. Who knows, the Wasatch mountains might not get any snow for the next few seasons( not really but is possible). You may end up in Montana if skiing is that big of deal to you. Just saying to keep your doors open to other things in life, don’t limit yourself.

It's all about time management my guy. I have plenty of friends at school who are engineering majors who ski with me both days of the weekend as well as a few days during the week, a few of them logged 70-80 days this season while taking 19 credits. If you can get your shit done when you're not skiing as well as realize that there's times where you need to not go skiing in order to get your shit done, you'll be just fine.

Go to trade school and get qualified to work in renewable energy (wind/tide turbine technician, solar panel installation etc.)
That sector is growing really fast and the jobs pay well. Shouldn't be hard to find work in it near good skiing. It will satisfy your engineering cravings I would imagine.
You can get a diploma and complete an apprenticeship in less time than it takes to get a degree at a fraction of the price. If you do want a degree eventually, you can always go back to school after a few years working and saving money, with the added bonus of practical experience.

I'm going to school to become a highschool teacher OP, despite the shit pay and shit kids I am very much looking forward to it because:
-spring break, winter break and other breaks
- summmmmer
-It's a great back up to have- I could always go ski bum and then decide to re-enter society and teach whenever.
- job will never get boring- new year new kids

Frankly OP I would do a bit more searching before you pick engineering, it'll give you plenty of great job opportunities later in life but your skiing life will take a heavy hit and based on what my engineering major friends have said it is VERY tedious. Don't sweat it to much OP- but it wouldn't hurt to take a step back and prioritize what you want in life and then try and find a major for that.

One of my good friends is an engineer and he skis a ton and makes great money. He's also a great bmx rider. You can do whatever you want in this life. If you want it bad enough, you'll make it work. Good luck

I am currently a Junior at RPI studying Information Technology & Web Sciences.
I was previously an Computer & Systems Engineer major.

My friends and I often discuss if going to college was often the right decision, since it holds us back from doing what we want a lot of the times. It has stopped me from going skiing on killer powder days. It has stopped a lot of personal projects that me and my friends wanted to do such as programming our artificial intelligence or fuckin with raspbery pis. At the end of the day, we all know that we won't have much more time for our hobbies once we graduate and land a real job. So all we really came to college for was the money, the education, and the experiences.

Out of all my close friends, I have been the one to hold a 9-5 internship the longest and got paid the most for it. A 9-5 internship is easier than going to school without a doubt. I believe a job would also be easier and less stressful.

I wouldn't give up the experiences for anything in the world. I often times wish I went to an easier school, so I wish I would have had an easier time. I always end up remembering the experiences I've had here and wouldn't change much.

My advice to you is to consider all the experiences you've had in high school and in life. You're going to have more experiences that completely change your life in college. Take your time with your decision and don't rush it. One of the things I never considered was taking a gap year. Even though freshman year is kinda like a gap year, since your classes are a joke if you paid any attention or tried in high school. Once sophomore year hits, it hits harder than any mother fuker out there. You're going to lose 4 hours a day to 4 credit classes. You're going to be spending 4-12 hours in a lab on your days off as an engineer.

If you want to ski in college, you can make it happen though. If you manage your time well it is possible. All the people I have met who have taken a gap year before college are often very mature and do better in school, because they are 100% sure they know that they want a degree.

Not an easy task. If skiing is the number one. Try to make enough to just ski aka be a ski bum. If you have other ambitions (sounds like you do) push for them. Try to make time for it when you can and have more success in your job.

Yeah he’ll get so much time to ski spending the first year and a half in either Texas or Georgia and then getting shipped off to whatever base the branch decides to put you at doing bullshit jobs until you get stationed in Eastern Europe for a year not knowing if you’ll be around mountains or not.

Great idea to be able to ski a lot.

Key is not to get into debt. If you are paying for college on your own make sure to apply for all the scholarships and grants you can at several different institutions. Good idea to apply at a 4 year state school (in your state) a 4 year private school and a community college in addition to those out of state schools. Possible that you will get enough aid that you can get through your undergrad without debt. With good planning most people can get through community college with zero or minimal debt. Not uncommon for students to put together a full ride aid package that covers 100% of expenses at the C.C. level. Community college may be a better bet because you will have the freedom to explore both the tech and academic sides. There are a lot of high paying careers that start with hands on training in the shop. I have a friend that is a manufacturing engineering consultant for companies that do millions in sales and he does not have a degree and got all of his experience hands on in the shop and/or technical training. He makes more than a lot of guys with graduate degrees. You might decide that you want to get a transfer degree and if you borrow for just the last part of your education and have a clear path to employment you can have a plan to pay it off before you get sunk. This community college in Oregon requires only 90 days residence to get in-state tuition.

I didn't ski a lot when I was in. But I toured Thompson pass, skied Alyeska, surfed on Maui and scuba'd on guam. Ate sushi in tokyo, bulgolgi in seoul. Hit 130 mph on an artic kitty on the frozen tanana river. Slept underneath the northern lights.

As a college kid on the GI bill, I averaged 45 days a year and with grants I didn't have to work.

It isn't the bummy way through life, but man can you do incredible things and it opens a ton of doors.

I understand if people don't want to enlist though. There's good reason I got out.

It may be hard to put yourself into that position now, but there are a million other fun things to do besides skiing. I for myself loved surfing when I was your age (25 years ago). I went any time I could, studied in Sydney, spent all holidays travelling to remote surf spots. I got a PhD in Germany
(compatible with skiing in the alps) and afterwards a Postdoc fellowship at Stanford, within 1h drive of some awesome surf spots. But even then I had to be flexible. No significant swells hit the bay area in summer. So I started kiteboarding for the other half of the year. It's nothing like surfing, but also a ton of fun. It turned out the professor I was working with was a ski fanatic and we skied Squaw valley with our whole research group. I now live comfortably working on AI research and no, I do not get to surf where I live now (except on holidays). But I went back to spending my winter holidays skiing and absolutely love it. You can't have it all, but if you are a little flexible with your fun sports you can have an exciting job and tons of fun. You might just have to give up on the idea of landing a double cork one day.

Current comp sci/eng major at UNR, hope is to be able to ski and still hold a decent job with some mobility in the future. I work ~20 hours a week at night and still manage to ski 2-4 days a week with taking no less than 12 credits (12-15). Like others have said taking a normal recommended load (15-18 units) can be a lot during ski season and you would really have to prioritize. Maybe check out comp sci if you’re looking for a bit of freedom while you’re mainting a job, there’s a lot more to it than just ending up being a programmer.

Depends what kind of trade you do. General labouring is the worst for your body but more specialized ones are definitely okay.

Can't speak much to skiing during college years, since I wasn't able to much, but as a software engineer now, I'm working a full time job during the week and able to weekend warrior and still get 50+ days in this year. Looking back, going through undergrad to make my life after those 4ish years comfortable (money and career) was way worth it. If there's one thing you should 100% do, it is to get your undergrad degree at the very least. Work hard and play hard as much as you can during those years and you'll be thankful for it afterwards. Also, you're lucky that you've got a knack for engineering - gives you an edge over others to be more successful in your field.

Where are you located? Have you put any thought towards trying to work from home at night and ski during the day more if your current job doesn’t allow it? (My current professor works from home at nights outside of lecture). Just trying to figure out my path as I’m getting closer to graduating

Hey, I'm located in tech central - the bay area. I have thought about that, but my job (and most jobs here) isn't quite that flexible. I, along with many others I know in the industry, have meetings most days. Also, there is a general expectation that you're available for coworkers to ask you questions and answer emails during the day. That being said, I'm sure many people in the industry can still WFH during the night and ski during the day, but I personally would only do that if I had no meetings and no one was dependent on me for information. I feel that weekend warrioring + my PTO days is plenty skiing already, so I never seriously considered working through the night to ski during the day. That and my schedule usually doesn't allow for that.

Hmm yeah that makes quite a bit of sense. I’m originally from the bay and have been gone nearly two years and can’t imagine going back...will definitely need to make some decisions. Thanks man!

Found this to be the most relatable thread I have seen in a long time, so I thought I'd share my experience. I am currently 2 weeks out from finishing my 2nd semester as a mechanical engineer. It has been a battle for sure since I have never been the sharpest lightbulb in the shed. Takes shit a while to actually stick in my head.
Anyways, as far as skiing goes, I managed to clock somewhere between 20-25 days this season. Interestingly enough, and regardless of my snail-paced learning, I found myself open for skiing most Saturdays and Sundays (with a healthy homework session following the Sunday skiing). My biggest issue was something I think all UofU skiing freshmen without a car deal with, finding rides. Maybe it was just me, but finding riders who share your passes and aren't too hungover to drive on weekends was pretty tough. From reading other people's responses and talking to my engineer ski friends, I can say that it is definitely possible to pull off.
I would recommend aiming for a 5-year graduation plan right off the bat. You will be skiing a lot less if you are trying to grab an engineering degree in 4 years. But besides that, just do your homework early and try to keep your weekends as open as possible! Feel free to DM me with any other questions about the U or skiing at the U or engineering, I was in your shoes at one point and wish I knew a lot of what I know now.

In the exact same position as U. I am an engineering major at the U of U. Just want to get my degree, pay off student debt and go ski. Most kids in my class are looking at a 5 year plan as their flowchart for 4 years is unrealistic with some semesters requiring 18 credit hours of pure stem classes. I love the program and love salt lake, its challenging but with hard work youll get through it. If you load up your schedule in the fall you can have more time to ski in spring. Winter break is also a month long so you can get a ton of skiing in then. I got maybe 25-30 days this year which isnt enough but I know ill be happier in the long run when im 23 with a kickass degree. You can ski more if you drop the things that take up time. I very rarely party and if Im not at the library im at the hill, unfortunately im at the library a lot haha. You can make it work, but you need to be deadset on what your priorities are and stick to them. Girlfriends take up time, partying ruins the next day, working during the school year almost guarantees you wont ski that much, so find a summer job that pays well and try not to work during the year.

Not gonna lie, Im constantly stressed and broke. But theres no better feeling than crushing a physics test on friday and heading up to the mountains with your homies the very next day to rip some spring park laps. You gotta make some hard choices by giving up the stuff you dont value as much as skiing. Thats a case by case scenario that you have to decide for yourself.

Also, in state tuition for Utah is pretty easy to get, just need to get a drivers license and stay in Utah for 12 continous months without exceeding 30 days out of state in total.

Teacher here and first of all that’s whats up dude. Just wanted to say kids actually aren’t shit. They’re the best part of your job. Depending on what you want to do and where you want to teach, it’s very relative. For example, Chicago teachers went on strike years ago and now average like 80k annually. I don’t get anywhere near that but I’m relatively new and get paid competitively speaking with benefits which you’ll find is a major factor in looking for a job.

Oh and just FYI, most of my friends work over the summer to supplement income lol

Get the degree, as you get older, you start to have more goals than just ski as much as humanly possible. It is far easier to progress in life with a degree than without it. I have to work full time to pay for it, so I'd say look at it this way. Either you will be working a job later in life that pays you good money and you'll ski some, or you'll ski as much as you want and then be unable to do anything else.

I just finished my first year at a top 25 engineering school and I actually found myself not wanting to ski that much since I was always busy. In high school I would ski all of the time since I didn't have too many friends off the hill. In engineering, you are up to your eyeballs in homework and studying and clubs. I still managed to ski 17 days without a car when the nearest hill is an hour away. I don't get that skiing withdrawal as bad either (except November). I care a lot more about my grades than most people so it would have been easily possible to ski more. I also had a project team that met on Saturday which basically shut off the possibility of getting a ride.

Personally, I'd love to drop out and become a ski bum. But ive already fucked my body up enough that I know I'll have to get plenty of surgeries and shit when I'm older, so I'm sticking with hopes of a high paying job. Manage your time well, save your money, and you can easily ski plenty and do school.

ski bums need a job. Engineering is huge in a ski town dealing with development. get your degree...gain some job experience....then be a ski bum...in a ski town...with a family...comfortable.

Yo OP,
I had a similar dilemma when I was graduating high school. I ended up declining a scholarship and just skiing and working for a bit. It gave me a lot of time to think about what I really wanted, and now I take online classes in the summer and fall for marketing and ski as much as I want. This might not be the right path for you, but I think the extra time I took to think about my options helped me out a lot with my decision. I hope this helps!

Just an idea, if you are doing mech eng, or I guess other eng shit would probably work, apply to a ski lift company. Buddy of mine works for Doppelmayr, makes bank, has a company truck, and just spends his winters getting paid to drive up and down the rockies and check out the lifts that they have installed. (dude also gets passes to all the resorts he visits). Shit sounds pretty dope.
