Hey guys, I’m looking for some advice and two roommates at CU Boulder. I am currently on a gap year skiing as much as I can, and the last thing I want to happen is that I get a jerry who thinks wearing jeans is acceptable for skiing as a roommate. I don’t want to ask “do any of you guys ski” in the facebook groupchat because everybody and their mom is gonna say “OMG I DO”. But at the same time I don’t want to get paired with someone who doesn't ski at all. So, I have decided to come here.
I filled it out in February on the 1st day I could. I’m in Farrand Hall three person room. I’m probably gonna get an Ikon pass for copper and Eldora, and work holiday help to get a full epic pass.
Yeah I am thinking about getting an A-basin pass but it gets busy as fuck and I would rather drive to copper or winter park then. But who knows how busy its gonna be with it dropping from the epic pass.

Those bigger Farrand rooms are pretty dope. Farrand is cool because it straddles the Engineering Quad and Ferrand Field. There was a 3 person room in Baker Hall that had all skiers and they had a really dope setup with their skis all hanging on a rack they built on the wall. IMO getting paired with another skier that is not at your level or someone you end up not wanting to shred with is worse than someone that doesn't ski at all, its just as easy to find a crew to head up with even if you dont live with them. When you end up with an apartment its a much bigger deal to be with a cool crew than the dorms where you are all in a big pool of housing anyway.
That being said, even if your an incoming freshman start looking for Sophomore year housing ASAP and its never too early. Off campus housing is crazy in Boulder and you can get screwed pretty bad if you dont jump on that as early as possible. The last thing you want is to end up down by Pearl Street our out on Broadway and cut off from the social scene.
Honey_BadgerThanks for the advice man. What area would you recommend rooming at sophomore year in terms of location?
IMO this is the perfect sweet spot:
I really like this area because its really close to the RTD bus stop to get to Denver or the Airport, its near the walking path, right across the street from the UMC and a close walk to The Hill. They have a new walkway under Broadway which is cool so you dont have to run across the street blackout drunk dodging traffic. Its a good area too because its quiet when you want it to be and close enough to have people show up if you want to party. Its also more low key from a cop perspective vs the insanity of living by The Hill. Its basically the perfect crossroads between Chautauqua Park, Campus and the Hill.
Living up past the Hill is ok, but its generally a shit show of parties and police presence. This is also where most of the Fraternities are. If you decide to live up there, be careful to not get too far north going down the hill on Broadway as you will be more isolated. I would not live anywhere north of University. Anywhere North of campus is the 'Dead Zone' with mostly Townies and the Buff Bus doesnt go down there, avoid this at all cost. There are some decent apartments between 28th and 30th and the Buff bus has some stops there. That is more for when your an upper classman and are not as reliant on the CU campus life though.
Libby is the best freshmen dorm in my opinion, I lived in the basement it was a great time, pretty much all the centrally located dorms are good. The RA's in baker are way more strict than libby, farrand, hallet, and chey ho. Baker is the nicest dorm but like I said it comes with more strict guidelines. You can bool pretty hard in Libby and remain out of the eyes of the CSO's if you are smart. As far as for sophomore year the hill is great, streets from 20th to 14 are wild, but start looking for a house early because they go quick. Now that I am a junior and need to really focus on the upper level classes I live on 30th, and take a $6 uber or so to pearl or any of my homies houses on the hill that are having parties. DM me if you have any more questions about Boulder man it's a great time! Wish I could go back to freshmen year again for sure.
