She seems to think that people who get less viewers, have less competitors, should get the same amount of money as people who have a way larger amount of competition. If she wants equality, then women should compete alongside men for the same prize. She also thinks the meme is advocating for violence against women!!? Sierra is off the goop fr doe. For a social media influencer, she doesn't seem to grasp what a meme is. Maybe there is a more sinister reason for her posting this? (To boost her followers)

This is what happens when a society places too much of an emphasis on “equality “ “victimhood” and “slacktavism”

I’m sure Sierra rips , but the fact that the vast majority of the reason for her prominence and fame in this industry is from her aesthetics and proclivity to prance around half naked on social media is a major red flag that reeks of a double standard on her end .

Men and women are not and have never been equal.

Can the snowsports industry be more equitable ? Sure , if the market dictates women’s skiing is or can become more economically viable than men’s skiing .

Women have programs like She Jumps and numerous other female oriented welfare systems . Men have jack shit for advocacy groups like that . Therefore female skiers are more privileged .

Do a little bit of in-depth research on sexual dimorphism and human history. The emergence of men as a biologically stronger sex is 100% rooted in the rise of cultural patriarchalism. There are literally thousands of cultures and populations who have favored women's athletics, and seen women as the dominant competitors in a variety of physical domains. In this culture, at this time, men have a proclivity toward selective hereditary traits that have made them, temporarily, stronger on average. That would 1000000% change if we stopped subjugating women to domestic roles, discouraging them from athletics, and asserting that extreme sports are a men's field. You want women and men to go head to head? First give them the same chance that men have. Create competitive ski organizations that are all women (bc we all know how many teams are boys clubs). Wait.. you do know that those groups are only there because of the inherent inequality of opportunity for female skiers in the first place... right?

Men don't have jack for advocacy because they make up 80% of the people on the hill..

You don't need advocacy if you're in the majority... That's the whole point of advocacy.

Chimpster37If contest payouts weren't/aren't equal, it means it's harder for women to sustain careers as comp skiers. That means there are less women role models to encourage younger women to get into the sport. The more women in the sport, the higher chance of women throwing down harder.

Also to directly address your example. I pay one of my part time employees $25hr, whilst another one of his employers only pays him $16hr. I know for a fact that guy works a shit load harder for me than the other employer and that's 100% due to opportunity to earn more with me. He said it himself and I've actually observed him working for myself and the other employer first hand to back it up.


As far as your first point, that is true and there should be more female role models for young skiers and boarders. I don't necessarily think that bumping up their contest payouts is the way to go, though. I'm going to reference my initial post here: I think the female athletes need to show their ability before demanding the equal pay. On the other hand, hucking your meat off a 50 foot booter is not necessarily equal to a corporate raise.

As far as your second point, that kind of proves my point though I kind of wasn't sure what you were getting at. If you was a woman and a decent park skier, fuck yeah I'd want to try harder to earn more dough.

EDIT: I wasn't sure if you were paying this guy in your second example more right off the bat, please elaborate

The WNBA has been and still is a charity league funded by the NBA. The world exists on a capitalist plane. Sure, it would be lovely if we could all be paid wonderful amounts of money and everyone and thing were equal. But we aren't. The reason we all live such luxurious lives here in our first world countries is because there are billions of third worlders willing to work for large corporations for a poverty stricken existence. There will always be inequality because people are inherently unequal in both our upbringings and our genetic makeup. Some are smarter, stronger, larger, born richer, became richer, more powerful, less powerful. The same will apply to this particular niche which is freestyle skiing and the discrepancy in performance between men and women that will always exist. This affects public viewership which affects how much pay they each receive based on the advertising revenue from said viewership.

The WNBA is not economically viable . David Stern , commissioner of the NBA which organizes the WNBA has lamented how much of financial trainwreck that league has become.

Therefore it absolutely deserves “less funding” because it doesn’t generate a viable economic return.. because it produces an inferior product. It ain’t “nice “ but it’s the truth .

Same applies for women’s skiing , with the exception of racing where the women are bigger stars than the men ( at least in this country) and I’m 100% cool with that because women’s ski racing is actually compelling to watch .

Direct funding, no... but you can't put a dollar figure on the massive increase in women playing basketball, buying basketball gear, watching the NBA and playing the sport itself in the last 20 years.

Go back to to the 80s and 70s, and women played basketball because someone told them "hey you're tall, you should try this"

Now, women get into it and straight ball. That's a societal change that the NBA got going... same with soccer.. you can't put a price tag on that... and the NBA knows that's the real reason the wnba came into existence - to spread the sport and grow the fanbase to the 50% of earth that it hadn't targeted... and it's been successful as hell at that.

And that's what equal opportunity and pay does.. it effects society. That's so much bigger than worrying about the immediate dollar revenue at the turnstile.

totes. watching womens ski racing is one of my favourite things, and one of my proudest accomplishments as a brother, and as a skier, is teaching my sister to ski as a youngling and develop into an elite FIS ski racer. she can ski circles around me just about everywhere, except when we start straightlining bumps!

From personal experience, yes. But beforehand please know I support and advocate for women's participation in these sports and genuinely hope this discrepancy fades in the future.

But as far as I know at the local, regional, and sometimes national level for both skiing and mountain biking, it's difficult to work your ass off and roll the dice of serious risk for years to end up 6th out of 100+ and receive nothing in return while 5th place in the female class has ridden or skied for a couple years, has invested far less time and energy, beats less than half of her competition, and receives hundreds of dollars of compensation for her efforts. OF COURSE the system that has led to such an imbalance of participation and ultimately competition is unfortunate, unfair, and in need of change, but we have to view reality and fairness as it currently stands with logic.

I will say, violence against women is a serious issue but that wasn't the point of the meme. I guess I can find a way to agree with her on that little bit.. but that is a stretch. Otherwise this who thing is beating a dead horse and usually exaggerated so far that it actually deters people from wanting to care about it.

ok want to address one thing I've seen here a couple of times. skiing, and progression is and never has been about money. Ive never met anybody thats said or thought I need to get better so I can win comps to make money. literally never. And also, there is no money in the sport in the first place. money isn't the incentive to ski and train and learn and shit. it might make you try that trick you don't want to when its on the line, but people send it for the love of the sport because lets face it, you have to be crazy to chuck you self spinning and flipping with wooden planks strapped to your feet. crazy, or in LOVE.

Ive been pretty heated in this thread and there is a reason for this and why I think Sierra is so toxic and bad for skiing and especially for young girls. Here is the deal, I have a 2 year old Daughter that LOVES skiing. Every time I am on my laptop she runs up and says, "Watch skiing Daddy" and I will throw on a cool edit or a SLVSH game and she says things like " I want to go skiing..." Most skiers are guys and I want something she can relate to more so I will throw on an old Sarah Burke edit or something to show her girls can rip too and have someone for her to relate and look up to.

Now you have Sierra who is really nothing more than a fabricated corporate image that has no other video content other than a set of what looks like carefully set up and produced stunts. Her instagram has straight up full nudity, videos of her in a bikini with no other intent than to flaunt her sexuality for attention and she tries to convince the world she is a pro skier. Because of this, she get a huge following because of her looks and willingness to expose herself for attention.

I am 100% down on getting more girls skiing, especially through outreach programs and girls ski clubs and teams etc. Comp pay is a complicated debate and there are merits to both sides of the argument but it still stems around getting more girls into the sport. But the last thing we want is girls thinking that if they buy some skis, cute gear and look like a whore on Instagram for attention then that makes them a skier. We emulate those we look up to and Sierra's massive following certainly has an affect on young people. It also shows girls that you have to be skinny and look cute to fit the model of a skier instead of relying on your talent. That misses the whole point of what skiing is. I love skiing, partly because despite all the other material and petty bullshit you might be going through in life, you can click into your sticks and rip as hard as you can and let all that go. On the other hand, Sierra brings that poison directly into skiing when skiing itself is supposed to be an antidote for. Especially for girls who have massive social pressure already and can use that outlet that skiing brings.

If shes talking about payments from sponsorships as an athlete, then shes a major hypocrite. She makes more money than most contest girls who pour their hearts out into training and risking their bodies to perform at a top level
She turned this whole situation, which should have been a conversation about the differences in pay between men and women, and WHY it exists, into a conversation about her.

I have no issue with people criticizing the meme. I think people being able to say what they want and other people being able to be upset and critique it is a balanced system.

BUT, I do think there is a fine line between critique and being an outrage enthusiast. It's one thing to say a meme is in poor taste, and sexist. It's something entirely different to say that the meme is calling for violence against women, a sign of systematic oppression and rant about how this meme is representative of everything wrong with society.

I'm not making the argument that people in privileged positions shouldn't have opinions. However I do think it is equally poor taste that someone who travels around the world for a living doing fun things calls being upset about a meme and posting instagram stories about how terrible it is activism.

She's fighting the wrong battles. Maybe she does a lot of activist work. I don't know her so I'm making a pretty biased judgment off of her social media. To me it seems like getting so upset about a meme is either a grab for more followers or just immaturity. Her posting insta stories about that meme being systematic oppression and a call to violence does nothing to actually help women and further polarizes people who disagree with her to begin with.

Of course the WNBA deserves less pay. It’s a market. NBA players are paid based on eyeballs, merchandise sales, etc.

Should the government subsidize the WNBA and artificially inflate the salaries of players? Should NBA players be obligated to split their earnings with WNBA players?

Just curious, how many WNBA games did you watch this season? How many games did you attend? Buy any jerseys? Try and get other people to follow the league?

Do you really believe that WNBA and NBA players should earn the same? The WNBA season is also much shorter.

I think players in general should be earning more across the board, regardless of gender as they are the product and have relatively short careers. Maybe some sort of legitimate profit sharing agreement or at the very least a nice pension and health care.

But again, it’s pretty tough to pay people beyond what they generate. The WNBA would go completely belly up trying to pay players what NBA players make. And I’m all for people like Mikaela and Lindsey making more than their male counterpart because they attract more eyeballs and are so dominant. They’re stars and deserve to be paid as such.

I also think in 2 years, Kelly Sildaru will be one of the highest paid skiers, and I’m quite sure that if Chloe Kim isn’t there yet, she will be when she wins halfpipe gold.

Ultimately she saw the opportunity to take something she knows will lead to personal gain and is a contemporary issue everyone knows about and exploited it. She acts like the white knight of skiing but truthfully shes in it for money and nothing else, if she cared so much about women in skiing we'd see her advocating for equality more than once on her whole page.

Most of all, create the same opportunities for women athletes. Nobody is going to throw triple corks in competition for half the payout, plain and simple. Change the culture, and you will level the playing field. People didn't think women could be engineers or doctors 50 years ago either, but obviously, they were wrong.

Violence against women: The woman literally got thrown out of a car for calling out systemic oppression you pop tart.

SuspiciousFishIve been pretty heated in this thread and there is a reason for this and why I think Sierra is so toxic and bad for skiing and especially for young girls. Here is the deal, I have a 2 year old Daughter that LOVES skiing. Every time I am on my laptop she runs up and says, "Watch skiing Daddy" and I will throw on a cool edit or a SLVSH game and she says things like " I want to go skiing..." Most skiers are guys and I want something she can relate to more so I will throw on an old Sarah Burke edit or something to show her girls can rip too and have someone for her to relate and look up to.

Now you have Sierra who is really nothing more than a fabricated corporate image that has no other video content other than a set of what looks like carefully set up and produced stunts. Her instagram has straight up full nudity, videos of her in a bikini with no other intent than to flaunt her sexuality for attention and she tries to convince the world she is a pro skier. Because of this, she get a huge following because of her looks and willingness to expose herself for attention.

I am 100% down on getting more girls skiing, especially through outreach programs and girls ski clubs and teams etc. Comp pay is a complicated debate and there are merits to both sides of the argument but it still stems around getting more girls into the sport. But the last thing we want is girls thinking that if they buy some skis, cute gear and look like a whore on Instagram for attention then that makes them a skier. We emulate those we look up to and Sierra's massive following certainly has an affect on young people. It also shows girls that you have to be skinny and look cute to fit the model of a skier instead of relying on your talent. That misses the whole point of what skiing is. I love skiing, partly because despite all the other material and petty bullshit you might be going through in life, you can click into your sticks and rip as hard as you can and let all that go. On the other hand, Sierra brings that poison directly into skiing when skiing itself is supposed to be an antidote for. Especially for girls who have massive social pressure already and can use that outlet that skiing brings.


You make some really really good points and I fully agree that there are thousands of trashy IG models who simply use their looks for financial and petty gains - but I dont think Sierra one of them and to reduce her down to just "a model flaunting her sexuality" seems pretty disingenuous.

Yes, she is using her looks (bikini pics, nude shots, etc.) to garner more fame/money/financial benefit. However at the same time she posts tons of content about nutrition, climate change issues, female reproductive rights, the benefits medical cannabis use, and other social issues - especially those pertaining to young girls. Do her posts often seem hypocritical to her message - yes absolutely, but IMO she's doing a whole lot more good than harm and there could definitely be (and are) worse role models for young people to look up to.

Should the government subsidize the WNBA and artificially inflate the salaries of players? Should NBA players be obligated to split their earnings with WNBA players?

Just curious, how many WNBA games did you watch this season? How many games did you attend? Buy any jerseys? Try and get other people to follow the league?

Do you really believe that WNBA and NBA players should earn the same? The WNBA season is also much shorter.

I think players in general should be earning more across the board, regardless of gender as they are the product and have relatively short careers. Maybe some sort of legitimate profit sharing agreement or at the very least a nice pension and health care.

But again, it’s pretty tough to pay people beyond what they generate. The WNBA would go completely belly up trying to pay players what NBA players make. And I’m all for people like Mikaela and Lindsey making more than their male counterpart because they attract more eyeballs and are so dominant. They’re stars and deserve to be paid as such.

I also think in 2 years, Kelly Sildaru will be one of the highest paid skiers, and I’m quite sure that if Chloe Kim isn’t there yet, she will be when she wins halfpipe gold.

You missed my already stated response to this. It goes beyond immediate market dynamics.

You cannot put a price tag on growing the sport played by your league.

I'd be interested to see hard data on basketball related purchases made by women pre and post wnba. Guarentee theyve increased growth in the goods sector... which means they have more money to put towards sponsoring basketball leagues.

Memes matter. People get radicalized into white nationalism/fascism through ironic memes, and at some point it gradually stops being a joke any more. The founder of Stormfront (neo-Nazi website) is on record saying it’s a way to ease people into extreme ideology. I’m not saying that this meme is literally or deliberately advocating for that, but it is a part of a larger culture that it’s worth acknowledging. I love ironic memes, and at least being conscious of how they can fuck with your head is a good thing.
