"Non-Conventional" All-mountains

Discussion Time!

What are some of your personal favorite "non-conventional" skis to use as an all-mountain (either by you or someone you've seen)?

When talking about a conventional all-mountain, I suppose it would be somewhere in the 85-110 waste width (obviously varies by region), good at all/most terrain, medium side-cut, usually with a traditional (or similar) camber).

When referring to non-traditional, I do not mean something like say, the Daemon that has different features (like the camber) for an all-mountain: as it is still marketed as one. I mean like seeing someone using a set of K2 Pon2oon's as their daily/one ski quiver. Setups that make people on the mountain raise their eyebrows because they don't know what's up.

For example, I know a lot of people use them as a daily out here in the west, but I still get looks and questions when people see me on my Moment Wildcats on a non-powder day. But they just feel so amazing in everything I ski them on!

Let's hear those "strange" setups that work well for you or someone else

a buddy of mine used to use volkl chopsticks for his everyday ski on the ice coast

i switched skis with him one day on typically bad conditions and holy shit did those skis suck for that. felt like i had two hovercrafts on my feet instead of skis

very non-traditional to say the least

they dont match your criteria in the op...but i rock 191 Caylors (146-120-138) almost every day. medium flex, no camber, lots of rocker. super fun, mounted close to center so theyre pretty pivoty for a true 191


if im not jibbing on the caylors ill be on the goats 143-116-126. lots of weird looks on the chairlift when there hasnt been fresh snow but honestly love fat skis and both of them still carve well on hard pack.

I ski Moment Wildcat's everyday. 116 underfoot is kind of big so maybe that's unconventional. As far as unconventional setups go, I know a dude who tours on Supernatural 115's with Dukes. That is a heavy fucking setup, I have no idea how he does it. My old roommate had a pair of center mounted Chronics that he skied everywhere even in deep snow. I lent him some pow skis once and he didn't like them, he preferred his own skis because he was stupid.

Buddy I know uses Blends and mounts them at a tiny bit behind the recommended and uses them as a dedicated all-mountain for when he isn't using his pure park skis.

Atomic blogs were my daily on the east coast. Ice, park, grass and whatever else and they ripped. Still one of my favorite skis ever.

I'm riding some new old stock 192cm Stockli Stormrider 110TT's. They are insanely damp even by Stockli standards, owing to their unusual construction: Wood core, epoxy, two sheets of Titanal. That's it. No fiberglass, no plastic, no foam, no air. Just metal, glue, and wood. They've made me a better skier.

The wildcats feel so natural. I’ve started riding my governors when it’s icy though because they have even better edgehold.

You sound like me. The 4 skis I ski most are Goats at -1. Kartels116s at Center. A Pair of Blackops 118s at Center and a pair of Blends at center. Nothing under a 3 digit waist and nothing under a 180 length lol.

I bought a pair of blends a month or so ago and havent skied anything else since. Im not even the biggest park skier they are just so fucking fun, I dojt blame the dude one bit

I’m curious how the goats, Kartel, and Bops compare. Obviously the BGs are directional but just in an overal riders perspective. What are your thoughts?

Growing up I used my Rossi sprayer bc for everything. Raced on the alpine team with them before getting kicked off for smoking pot on the lift, used them in the trees and the park, groomer days and everything in between. Rossi was the shit in the early 2000s with salamon.

The BlackOps are like the baby of the two. Which Is why I like them so much. The goats are obviously a bit chargier than the kartels but less jibby. The blackops are great because they blend my favorite features of both skis into one. They have the charginess of the goats with the weight and shape yet are still plenty playful because of their rocker and camber which is more similar to the kartels. Having a fully symmetrical ski is cool too. My stance is a bit wider naturally and fairly upright so being right at center really allows a lot of pivotability as well as edge control because Im driving the ski with barely any forward pressure.

In pow the goats are king due to that taper, the kartels are the go to park skis and the blackops are the ones I take out when Im skiing everywhere or going somewhere new. Really all 3 skis are super sick and it all depends on preference and conditions.

Skied Pettitors as my daily in Colorado for a season. Mad camber and rocker, 120 under foot. Id do it again. They shred.

I have a pair of ooolllldd Lib Tech NAS POW, 120 mm waist, rocker with a little bit of camber. Pretty much a pow ski but show merit for most kinds of skiing in most snow conditions.

Surface outsiders- "Hey bro are your ski broken?"

Why yes they are actually, I managed to snap both of them in the tip and tail in the exact same spot on both skis and continue to ride them because I like to.

I skied Armada Bubbas as my only ski for the whole 2013/14 season in the italian Dolomites. It was a record snow year so there were many days with powder but I did also ski them on Hardpack and even in the Park at times.

My dailys are Billy Goats but my Spring Jib skis have been Icelantic Gypsys (Nomad 125s). I dailyed the Gypsys for nearly 3 seasons before this year when I swapped to the goats. They rail pretty well for a 150/125/140 ski and they have a pretty forward mount for a pow ski at -4 or -5 I think

I've been skiing the CT5.0 as my go to on the east coast. They do everything, and are what some would consider 'wide' for New England haha

I ride 184 billy goats all season. Ideal on open pow laps, but can hold their own in hard pack. I ski park, and try and jibb on em, and they treat me real well. But always wish I had something more jibbier in the spring time.

At this moment i don’t own a ski under 116. They ARV116 is my go to ski no matter the conditions. I have one pair with a park detune, then one with a shift on them but people definitely look at me alittle strange when I’m rocking them in the park.

Sorry man don’t think I have any bg park footage, don’t ski park a lot, mostly freeride. But I can usually hit 2s and 4s out of rails. Lookin to step up my park game next year though. I’ll def take some footy.
