Backpacking 2019

Share your goals, photos, stories, plans about backpacking in 2019. Ask gear questions, or anything else; just share the stoke for backpacking.(Backpacking as in camping, not travelling.)

I've recently planned a few short weekend trips now that ski season's over in the lower midwest. In April I'm doing Big Piney Trail in MO and am looking forward to that.

P.S. who else uses Alltrails? It's my favorite app out there.

I don't think I'm doing too much this year but hoping to be able to do a few day hikes while In Aus this summer. Will probably squeak in a couple hikes in the fall in the ADK's in the couple of weeks I'm back there.

I generally do day hikes though some longer ones though. Love finding stuff that's 10-25 miles without people or very few people. I've been looking at some gear though. I need to get a new tent, and have seen some pretty good sales. Just kinda strapped for $$ at the moment.

I’m definitely going to do some backpacking in the rad wa. Cascades this summer/fall. There’s a lake I haven’t been to since 09 and it’s got fat cut throat trout that bite on the first cast. The lake is 1.5. Miles off trail. And planning on going to another lake that’s off trail thats got Montana blackspot trout. And a killer view of mnt. Daniels. Life is good when you’ve hiked all day got camp set up got a fire going and sipping on some gin or tequila.

Plan on doing a lot of backpacking this summer and fall. Going to Montana in May where I can hopefully put a couple days in but hope to get out every weekend here in northern California. Pray my backpacking season goes better then my ski season, didn't get nearly enough says in due to life. I don't like all trails, check out rei hiking project app. Much better.

I believe California has something like this but it's the 14ers. Really want to tick Shasta off this year but we'll see. The whole getting into shape thing puts me off. Lol

Word I know CO def has a lot of people going for the 14ers. But I think there's like 50 there so that's pretty wild to get. How many does ca have like 10?

Theres a bunch of New England list besides it. I believe the 100 highest, NE 4000ft club which has a winter club. People get crazy and will do all 48 every season for the year. Every new england states set of 4000ft and then the NE 111, 52 with a view.

Don’t forget gridding. Way more involved than every season. There’s a site that tracks all this.

Around 10. I know most of them are in the Sierra's while the crown jewel, Shasta sits alone in the Cascades.

I am planning to get huge into backpacking this summer. Did some serious bush-whacking, 25-mile 6,000+ vert day-hikes in SW montana last summer and I would be ecstatic to stretch those trudges into multiple days.

Finally got me a job in Bozeman and don't need to buy any ski gear whatsoever for next season after taking it easy this winter. Going to spend a pretty penny on fresh backpacking gear and plan a big trip later in summer

Was originally planning to hike all of the Maryland section of the AT right after my exams are done, but I'm working in New Mexico this summer so that's out the window. Been hitting a bunch of 20ish mile loops in Virginia and WV every weekend while its been warm, and I'm probably gonna keep up with that till I get out to NM.

A friend did it. It sounds really, really good. It does require a permit (which helps preserve it being an amazing experience by not flooding it with tons of people) so keep that in mind when planning.

Rad stuff. Most parks in Canada do require some form of permit which is definitely beneficial. I know the WCT has quite a few man made features so I'm sure the fee goes towards that stuff

I’ve gone from snoqualmie pass to Canada. It’s got more rugged mountains than snoqualmie pass south thru oregon. If your looking for a few weeks hiking on the pct id suggest that section.

I really want to do the bigfoot trail in Northern California. Being honest with myself i dont ever see myself doing the PCT or the CDT in the near future but the bigfoot trail takes about a month and hopefully ill be in a better position next year and work out the logistics. My mission this year is another 8 dayer out in the coastal range and a few 3 dayers out in the trinity alps.

Depends on where you are. Generally any of the longer hikes or more random hikes arent crowded. There's just sooo much out there. Actually have never hit too bad of crowds in the daks. But i never really do the really popukar stuff in the high peaks.

I have a 65L pack that I use for shorter trips. May be a bit big for two night by some people standards but it works. I'd say anything around 60L would fit the bill.

35-45l, no bigger. There’s a saying in backpacking - no matter how big your pack is, you will fill it. Smaller packs are generally lighter and carry better. I use 55l for most extended trips, and 65l for when I know I will be carrying 5+ days of food and cold weather gear. If you want a one-size-do-all pack, get something around 50-55l.

Source: I have backpacked thousands upon thousands of miles in conditions ranging from the arctic to the desert.

Did one two night trip in the Beartooths last summer to check out a peak I wanted and it was dope. Hoping I can squeeze in one or two similar trips this summer, either to check out one of the bigger peaks in the interior of the Bob Marshall or for another Beartooth peak. It would be cool to do something in Glacier as well but the permitting system is super shitty though probably necessary.

Been looking at maps and planning the first backpacking trip. 4 days I'm thinking in the north coastal range with hiking partner and his dog. I'm already excited. I love looking at map and planning a route knowing to accomplish it we have to get out there and log some serious mileage I'm some rough terrain.

Hell yea man. Maybe i'll see you up there one of these days. I'm located about an hour south so I have some things planned on Shasta even if I don't get the opportunity to climb it. Shasta guides posted this today, thought it kinda cool how much snow the mountain got this year.
