Ski patrol seem similar to police officers. Some do their job, some don’t. The ones that don’t are usually assholes. Or something like that.

You bring up a good point but my dad said he was okay he just needed a few minutes. It's just upsetting that the patroller never even checked on us regardless of us getting him. I've had patrollers check on the most minor falls which is far better than not checking at all.

the person who fell had someone assisting them (you) and if it was severe that assisting person should have flagged patrol. People fall and sometimes they take a while to get up. being 60' away and not hearing from you they needed help, why is he wrong?

Haven't been to Winter Park since like 2012, but the last time I was there, I got my pass pulled for skiing riflesight because one patroller up top was closing it when I entered, but hadn't fully put the line up. By the time I get to the bottom, I get clotheslined by a patroller who had no intentions of hearing my explanation. Didn't really matter cause I just had to show up the next day to watch a safety video about jerries dying in avalanches. In this scenario, I guess the guy was trying to do his job and keep everyone safe, even though I figured it was standard protocol to radio to other patrollers that you closed a trail, only once you've secured the rope, but miscommunication happens.

Did you try to get the patrollers attention? I've heard of people calling 911 to get routed to ski patrol so you can tell them where you are, but I wish resorts had a posted phone number or VHF channel you can call to get their attention. This is one reason I see it could make sense to let yellow jackets deal with kids skiing like assholes, so patrollers can deal with the stuff that actually matters. On the topic of skiers going too fast, the "ski fast, lose pass" signs really bug me. Do they just mean to ski in control? Because I thought that's what is expected of all skiers on any trail that is not explicitly for beginners. If they mean you must have the ability to sink an edge and stop to avoid other skiers in a congested area, then that means that slow skiing is different for skiers of all abilities.

Haven't gotten yelled at in forever for skiing fast, mostly because taking a few turns to shave some speed lets patrollers know you saw the sign in the very least and will probably be able to avoid other people. Unfortunately, the deep pockets lawsuit mentality puts companies like Ikon and Vail in a tricky place, especially the resorts actually owned and operated by the corporation, because people know that they are more likely to get a huge settlement from a massive corporation than a tiny resort struggling to stay open... That said, those companies have plenty of lawyers on retainer for this type of thing. Sorry about the somewhat off topic rant, hope your dad is doing well, OP.

Positions of power attract people who abuse them, there a lot of wonderful ski patrollers, but there are a lot of dicks too that don't care about safety, just being the biggest man/woman in town.

This could be the case. Huge volunteer patroller program. Worth leaving feedback so they can improve. Patroller might have been stopped above you to slow people down while your dad recovered, giving you a chance to call them over if necessary but they should have been more proactive. Just because someone isn't calling for help doesn't mean they don't require a courtesy check. Hell half the time people are hurt they don't quite realize it.

Yeah they just had try outs last week for volunteers so they probably have a bunch of newbs skiing around who are afraid to actually provide care.

It's honestly so fucked up that many patrollers and staff care more about people skiing fast than helping people who are in need. Hope your dad is doing okay man.

Maybe on the east coast. Never met a patroller who wasn’t super fucking chill west of the Mississippi. Better hope you never need their help with that attitude.
