Jake Phelps, editor of Thrasher mag, has passed away

"Jake Phelps was 100% skateboarder, but that label sells him way too short, because beyond his enormous influence in our world, he was truly an individual beyond this world. When loved ones pass we sometimes mythologize about their full lives rich in friendships and experiences. Sometimes we need to talk ourselves into believing it all. It makes us feel better, and helps us cope with the loss. Well, in the case of Jake, the task becomes wrapping your head around just how many lives one person could possibly live. He really did see it all, do it all, and that incredible brain of his could relish every last detail.
But most of you reading this now identified primarily with Jake Phelps the skateboarder, and editor of our magazine, so I will leave you with this truth - I never met anybody who loves anything more than Jake worshipped skateboarding. Just as we need food and water to survive, Jake needed skateboarding to keep his blood pumping. It was more than a hobby or form of transportation or way of life - it was his oxygen. Here’s another thing. Jake never bailed. Jake fucking slammed. And there is a big difference. He only knew commitment. He was going to go for it without hesitation, and there were only two outcomes. Either you’d see his triumphant fist pumping in the air or it’d be an earth-shaking collision with the concrete. I remember him telling me once that he never fell backwards, he always fell forward. Leaning back meant there was hesitation, and Jake was all the way IN.
There was no myth. The man was the myth. We love you, Jake. -Tony Vitello"

56 was far too young, this man brought a lot of joy to a lot of people and should will be missed greatly. There's certain feeling I get when I see that thrasher mag sitting in my mailbox, I get stoked and try to read every page, understand everything inside and try to incorporate what I have learned into my skateboarding. He really brought the skateboard community together in a way not many others could. RIP Jake Phelps.

PS- He hated the poser trend of wearing thrasher when you could give two shits about skateboarding and I'm so serious, if I see a single kid wearing thrasher today I'm gonna throw fucking hands I swear to god. Disrespectful little shits man.

I think this is the first video I saw of the dude. He's so fucking eloquent. The whole thing is more about Phelps than about Nyjah, even though Nyjah throws the fuck down, but that's just it, Phelps brought the best out of Nyjah so quickly.

People who dont skate and even people who ride skateboards a bit wearing thrasher annoys the fuck out of me. ive rode a skate since i was 5 and ive done a fair share of filming, but i have never bought or worn thrasher cause i have never felt i rode hard enough. im a below the coping skater haha growing up the guys who wore thrasher stuff fucking ripped. rip JP

this pisses me off too. If you can't stand on a fucking skateboard, then don't dress up like a skater kid.

RIP... Though to be honest I've always wondered how somebody so gnar was still alive. Even at that age if you gave a him a board and a hill he'd bomb it, or he'd still be front 5-0ing the deepest of deep ends.

I honestly feel like wearing Thrasher is just a meme now and it's just a Zumiez brand, like even if you actually skate it just kinda looks silly and like you're trying to look like a skater boy. Pretty sad cuz Thrasher is actually a sick magazine, but I feel like the logo has become so much more hyped than the actual magazine content. Pretty fucked.
