Why do pipe skiiers use poles?

Why do all pipe skiiers use poles? Surely it would be easier to do some of the stuff they do without them, but they all use poles.

Same reason most people ski with poles in general, they grew up with them, feels odd to not have them in your hands

Balance. Poles help a skier balance the way tight rope walkers use a pole. The change is very slight, but makes enough of a difference. As someone who has always skiied with poles, if I try to spin off a large jump or hit rails, or ride pipe without them, it feels a bit awkward. Especially spinning without poles I find I miss grabs, because the weight I'm used to isn't there.
For competitive skiing, starting gate/drop in rituals are more important than you might think, too. If an athlete always does, say three pole pushes dropping in to the pipe, taking that away could really put one off their game.

its popular with the judges because then they can see where your hands are and it also gives you more reason to keep your hands down. same with slope

but poles suck because I pissed a friend off on the lift and it pretty much turned into a sword fight. he dented my smith code. prob one of the most painful and expensive mistakes I've made.

it's popular with the judges because your hands aren't flailing around like a lost idiot! judges don't give a shit if you use poles or not but if you can't control your hands without poles, don't try it
