Backyard park tips?

Everything will likely be slower and less smooth (at least at first) than you expect. For your initial plan/build I suggest designing the layout with more speed and space than you think you need. As soon as you ad movement into the equation everything becomes a lot smaller and closer than you anticipated.

If you build a drop in go big or go home. Speed is chill.

6 feet tall at least, pvc rails(more rails=more variation=more fun!) Don't make the transition to steep or dropping in switch will be impossible(this was my main mistake). Also I recommend buying new wood as it will last longer.

Definitely go pvc, backyard setups are where you huck shit, so pvc wont hurt as bad. Also slides fairly well, if you have a good slope in your backyard you dont need to build a drop in, just put the rail at the bottom and build a kicker to get on. Also thow some chairs and shit to jib, makes it fun

What kind of metal are you using? How did it rip your edge out exactly?

Even if it is all rusty now all you need to do is sand/grind it down again. You can buy some paint to cover the rest of the rail so it doesn't rust again like most parks do.

The rail was a buddies who moved to I’m no sure. I think it might be too soft of a metal which is why it ripped out. It had been siting out side for years in Vermont before I got it this last summer (from a buddy who only wears saga! Haha) I sanded it and spray painted it black with glossy rustoluem. It’s a flat bar and the side was cutting through my base if I put pressure on it. The skis were previously warrantied so it wasn’t a big deal. Took a grinder from my work and with no clue what I was doing hit the corners of the flat bar along the whole side and then the top. Before I even hit it we had a bunch of rain so now I’m scared it will rip up a different ski.

Any my idea what paint resorts use??

If you live near a greenbelt, and your parents are cool with you breaking bylaws you can harvest trees from the forest for your build.

I’ve build many of backyard parks in my days. Lemme give you the key elements for success.

1. Pack everything down like a motherfucker cause backyard parks are notorious for having loose snow.
1.5 Anchor your rails GOOD and as best as you can. If possible dig them in the dirt in the warmer months so they don’t move or anchor them with ice slush and let freeze. Rails will always move unless they have a lot of anchoring and ground area as they take a lot more force than you think
2. freeze/firm everything up with a light spray of water or salt so you don’t have to re pack with a shovel after 4 runs
3. Make your rails and features lower than you think they need to be, because unless you live out west the east coast barely gets powder dumps anymore.
4. Build everything like you’re a god damn architect because nothing is worse than watching your pvc rail that took you 2 days of building in the snow with no gloves on snap in half when you try and 270 on and get pvc shrapnel in your legs.
5. For god sakes build rails like they’re meant to be built and don’t jerry rig it. Look up plans online or ask local rssorts.
6. Unless you have a big hill, make a tall ass drop in as you want more speed than you think for backyard
7. Get creative with features and you can really progress
8. Stay away from building jumps as they tend to be a waste of time and you don’t get much air off them
9. Materials are easy to come by if you know where to look. Most junk yards have a lot of scrap pipe or pvc that you can get for free or cheap or ask your local hill if they have any old features that need some TLC or where they got their materials from
10. Get your friends to help build it all and have a blast with it all. Backyard parks are the dopest thing ever.

It sounds like the rail metal is too soft. But I am no expert. Someone who has built rails for a mountain would know better.

As far as the paint goes, it will vary. Some bigger resorts probably spend up for marine paint that is a lot more tough but others I know for sure just use normal outdoor paint.

The paint won't be on the part of the rail you're sliding eventually. All metal rails will get rusty outside. The ones in parks just don't because they are getting slid across continually (and/or they use higher quality metal).

You can probably see now why most opt for the PVC rail for home use. It doesn't have the same feel as a metal rail but construction and maintenance is worlds easier.

Mine is only on paper right now, but I will start building it as soon as my brother will get some job done, so he can come and help me with it.

So my brother is now free, and we are finally starting the work tomorrow! Can't wait to see the final result.

The work process is going better than I expected, we managed to do a big part of the job on the first day. It's actually going very fast, I think that we can manage to finish it in 2 more days. I already ordered artificial grass from artificialgrass-manchester.co.uk, which we will be using to cover most of the yard. This is a better option, considering the fact that it's a bad shady in my backyard, and sometimes I am not at home for a week or two, and no one will be home to take care of the lawn.
