What GOOD college is near a mountain to ski

I am looking at colleges and am wondering about some potential colleges that are near some snow. Preferably a more selective college bc i actually am looking at majoring in engineering or business. Doesnt have to be next to a huge resort, just a mountain for local shredding thats close by.

Middlebury (or any NESCAC school for that matter)
Those are schools I applied to, all are within an hour of a good EC mountain. All except UVM are hard to get into so it depends on what scores and GPA you have.

I go to Dartmouth in NH and it’s the perfect school if you want to ski a lot and have great academics too. There’s tons of terrain within 45 min and a very strong community of skiers. I’m one of the few park rats but the backcountry/resort scene is awesome. We have solid engineering/business schools too

MTU. Mont Ripley is a 5 minute drive and students ski for free and Mount Bohemia is about a 50 minute drive with a $99 season pass. Plus it's a great engineering school.

Ripley and Bohemia are actually sick ski areas even by west coast standards. Just ancient slow chairs.

Montreal has some great schools, top are probably McGill and Concordia and there are dozens of mountains within an hour's drive. The closest i think is Mont Saint Sauveur. Canadian tuition is waaaaaay more reasonable than the states too.
Simon Fraser or UBC Vancouver also might be worth looking at. Cypress, Grouse and Seymour within easy reach and daily shuttle to Whistler.
U of Alberta Calgary you have COP in the city and the big 3 an hour away.

It’s a good engineering school. I hear the business program is good too. The skiing is very close and you can take the free transit to the ccs. Don’t expect to party unless you’re in a frat/sorority.

I would have chopped my arm off to go to Dartmouth.

Top 10 academics, awesome social scene and maybe the best Outing Club in the country? They own Moosilauke Mt (the first 4k footer on the AT) and their own separate ski hill (Dartmouth Skiway which im pretty sure all students get a free pass to?)

deadass MTU in Michigan you can shred pow at bohemia or ski for free at mt. Ripley.

not huge mountains but they're fun and everyone there is chill

lol also forgot to mention that they do 100% need-based financial aid as they have one of the highest endowments in the country.

A few years ago they also got rid of all post-graduate payments. (I.e once you graduated they absolved yourstudent loans.) They got rid of this though as it was too steep a cost. (Both my siblings went there and this was the case for one of them.)

I go to U of U. Business program is stellar as well the engineering program. PC, the bird, Alta, Brighton all within 45 minutes, sometimes less on a sunny weekday. I go skiing for hours after class easy. Looked at MSU as well, but from an educational standpoint, the U is a better school. Come here. I promise you won’t be disappointed

I gotta clarify that University of Alberta ≠ University of Calgary. UofA is in Edmonton which is a solid ~4.5hrs from either Marmot Basin or SSV/LLV. I miss living in Calgary.. I really took the distance to the mountains for granted there haha

Rabbit Hill has a decent park though.

If you care about academics stay on the east coast. A lot of the mountain schools out west have some real dumb professors who have been teaching at the school for 15 years just to ski and don't give a fuck about you learning anything/giving good lectures.

Fair point but keep in mind that private schools with big endowments to throw around often have stronger financial aid than state schools. Case in point, Dartmouth costs me less than in-state tuition would be at UNH

WE HAVE THE BEST SKIING.

2 minutes from lake tahoe, 4 minutes from a local ski hill
1 hour to get to squaw/heavenly/kirkwood/northstar/boreal, etc....

I have a bunch of friends who went to GOOD colleges so they could get GOOD jobs because that’s how you do GOOD in life. Seems like all they did was get GOOD at paying back loans.

Please remove head from ass and understand YOU will be the determining factor in your successes and failures, not an overpriced institution.

Lol I go to CSU, I wish I could agree but nah. Finding people who wanna leave to ski before 5am to beat the I70 shitshow on the weekends is like pulling teeth. Also, the engineering program likely isn't better than CU's. 🤷‍♂️

Hm.... I am a little skeptical of this.

Schools everywhere will have a variety of professors, many of whom have the necessary requirements and skills to be great teachers, whether they be skiers or not. If anything, professors who enjoy their time outdoors seem to be more dedicated towards their work and have a connection with their students. I personally love being able to bond with my profs over skiing, fishing, biking, or anything. Just because a professor is out west, loves the place they are living, and enjoys the outdoors doesnt mean they are going to not give a fuck about you learning anything/giving good lectures.

My personal opinion is that you need to go and experience all of these schools. East and West coast have very distinct vibes and all of them have their benefits for sure. Skiing out west is just geographically better and you have many options to go explore, but skiing in the east can be closer and less crowded.

Good skiing schools out here include U of U, Westminster has a good business program, Gonzaga is close to Schweitzer and Canada, Quest in BC is quirky but has some great programs and great outdoors so close, U. of British Columbia is a good school with many options for studying and you're close to Whistler, Western Washington doesn't have amazing academics but it is close to sea and mountains, Colorado College, DU, CU, CSU, Colorado School of Mines, etc. have amazing access to Colorado mountains but youve got to deal with the Colorado crowds. California is hard because the majority of schools are further from the Tahoe area. Boise State and Idaho schools have close access to mountains and backcountry but are limited in their studies. I also looked at Wesleyan, in Connecticut but growing up in Colorado spoiled my skiing privileges and I could not go ski east coast ice. Also harder to travel back home if you're from the West.

There are a lot of things that go into choosing a school, you will be able to experience different things once you get there (for me it has been much more climbing, backcountry, and kayaking), but you have to make sure that you enjoy the people and the culture as well. Basing a school strictly off of skiing is difficult because it can limit so many other things and make you unhappy. Go explore and visit these places, do overnight stays and see what the ski community is like. There are plenty of options out there.

UNH!!!!!!! I'm in engineering here and I ski a shit ton. We have a dank ski club that runs trips every weekend and host sick events plus both the engineering school and business schools are selective, very good and well known

Colorado Mountain college in Steamboat Springs. 3 miles from the mountain, everything you need in town on the way to the mountain, and I pay less in tuition per year for out-of-state than my sister did for in-state back home in New York. You can hit powder, park, and night ski, and you can also take classes specific for the ski industry. Only thing Steamboat lacks is females, other than that I highly suggest.

Iowa state we got seven oaks 15 minutes away in Boone! If you like park it's a decent little hill. Just enough to get your skiing fix.

Edit: Our Engineering and Business programs are both very good. I'm currently in engineering right now and they do a good job.

U of U is absolutely unbeatable. Laid back attitude around campus- people party pretty hard all fall but as soon as the snow comes erryone busts out the skis. There is a group for everyone, new wave Vishnu shit at Brighton, all you can eat park at PC, Deer Valley if you're bougie (actually really good on pow days cause erryone skies groomers plus its paper tickets so you can bum on the lifts), Alta and Snowbird for classic big mountain shit and tons of world-class backcountry. When it dumps there are urban spots on campus. People are dope and it's easy to make friends and find rides. All the resorts are within an hour. Unbeatable. School's good to it has like classes and stuff.
