GH5, A7III or something else?

Hey all, I'm looking to upgrade my camera to either the GH5 or the A7III. I currently shoot on a Sony a6300, and primarily use my Sigma 18-35 f1.8, so switching systems isn't that big of a deal because I will get an adapter for the GH5.

I primarily shoot weddings, so I love the idea of the 10 bit 4:2:2 of the GH5, and the IBIS is incredible as it will save my arms from dying of heavy lifting using a gimbal (still will use one but a great feature). I also love the 4K 60fps feature. Does the GH5 shoot 10 bit 4:2:2 internally in 4K 60fps?I'm just nervous about the lowlight primarily as well as the autofocus. I have been waiting for the a7siii to drop but we all know how that works.

I love my sony a6300, but I am needing to upgrade to something a little more professional and versatile. Would you guys recommend one over the other, or something else entirely? My price range is about $2500 for the body, but anything less would be great and I could spend the rest on glass.

If you're mostly shooting weddings, I'd say a7 for sure. GH5 is fantastic for skiing, but i could see it struggling in some low light situations.

For weddings idk if you could beat the a7iii. I definitely agree with eheath as I’m a big Panasonic guy and love my gh4 for everything skiing/action related and despite the gh5 having that better color science and slightly better low light performance than the gh4 it still probably won’t cut it if you primarily shoot weddings/low light stuff when you compare it to how the a7 will perform in those situations.

Hey dude - I've been using the GH5 as my primary for about a year and a half now. The camera is an absolute beast for wedding videography. You're right to assume the IBS will come in handy. I was shooting a wedding last fall and my gimble failed to work, the video turned out great regardless. I would suggest buying the GH5 S it has some upgraded perks that the regular GH5 doesn't, including better low light performance which will make a huge difference, especially if you are shooting weddings because the receptions can be pretty dark. I upgraded from a Canon 6D but kept the body as a backup and bought an adapter for my GH5 so I can still use all of my Canon lenses. Another really cool feature is the ability to shoot in 180FPS, you can get some fantastic slow-mo footage. PM if you have any questions.

just FYI OP the GH5s does not have IBIS.

Unless I am using the wrong acronym IBIS stands for In-Body Image Stabilization correct? Because the GH5 does have an in-Body stabilization. Or is it just the GH5s that doesn't have it? That would be weird.

Yes, GH5 has an IS system in the body, the GH5s does not.

You could budget it and go for a G9 if it gets tight. It's essentially the gh5's nephew made for outdoor and rough use with a decent low-light sensor, check the specs https://cameradecision.com/compare/Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-GH5-vs-Panasonic-Lumix-DC-G9

What do you use for followcams on your gh4? how do you get stable shots

I usually just go with my glidecam, sometimes a ronin m but that’s a lot of weight for skiing around filming my buddy’s all day.

the new panasonic what? S-series? A pain to switch to the new glass system though. Though I'm not sure if there are adapters for other glass or what the deal with that is yet, But yeah they just announced a new 6k full frame with IBIS.

been rocking the Gh5 and Gh5s now for a while and loving it! obv still use a panasonic hvx200 for those servo zooms people love

If you shoot weddings a lot, i would definitely opt for the GH5s. Much better performance in low light situations (dinner/receptions). You will be fine without ibis. A few panasonic lenses have IS built into it, so you could always pick up a couple of those. the 35-100 f 2.8 is killer, and has IS.

Been rocking the GH5 for the last 5 months or so.

Killer camera, great for run and gun shooting and has some great features. My only complaint is the auto focus and low light performance. Even with my native lenses for the gh5, the auto focus does not compare to my previous Canons I've shot with. In low light I could definitely see the Sony being a better option.

Either way they are both sick cameras, but if I were to do it agin I'd go Sony.
